Cubs take 2 of 3 from the Marlins

The Cubs finished off the Marlins in Miami with an offensive onslaught aided by a 15 MPH wind blowing straight out Sunday in Miami. Christopher Morel, Seiya Suzuki, Cody Bellinger homered along with Patrick Wisdom, Yan Gomes, and a pinch hit homer from Alexander Canario. Nico Hoerner also extended his hitting streak to 16 games. Jameson Taillon allowed 1 run in 6 innings for the win, The Cubs now head to Washington to take on the Nationals.

2023 World Series - Game 1 - Cardinals vs Astros

Mikolas would get off to a rough start, allowing 5 runs in just 1.1 innings, although a Goldschmidt error didn't help matters. Trevor Rogers would come into the game to relieve Mikolas but he would give up a 2 run homer to Yordan Alvarez and the Cardinals would be looking up at a 7-0 lead by the Astros after just 3 innings.

The Cardinals would claw back though with the help of homeruns from Jordan Walker and Nolan Gorman, as well as timely hitting by Paul Goldschmidt. When all was said and done, the game would be tied 8-8 heading into the top of the 8th inning.

The Astros would bring in 50 save reliever, Ryan Pressly, who was a perfect 4-4 in the playoffs in save opportunities. He set the Cardinals down in order in the 8th and Jordan Hicks did the same for the Cardinals.

In the top of the 9th with Pressly still on the mound, the Cardinals would get singles from Goldschmidt and O'Neill. Wilson Contreras would smack a 3-2 pitch over the CF wall to give the Cardinals an 11-8 lead. Ryan Helsley would come in and set down the Astros, 1, 2, 3 to give the Cardinals a miraculous come from behind win!!!

Game 2 - Flahtery vs McCullers Jr. (Cardinals lead, 1-0)

          2023 Orioles

O's (59-36), start off second half 3-3. They would lose 2 out of 3 to the Marlins (43-55), then took 2 out of 3 from the Dodgers (55-40). All in all, not a bad home stand considering the competition. Unfortunately, the Rays (59-40) have gone 5-1 since the break, including a sweep of the Royals (40-57). Our 4 game lead at the AS Break is now down to 2, and we now have to travel to TB for a 4 game set. This will absolutely have a playoff atmosphere and could very well have big implications when everything is said and done. The two AL East foes only meet for one more series the rest of way. Below are the scores from the home stand, as well as some standouts.

          GM# 90-95
          L vs MIA 1-0
          W vs MIA 13-5
          L vs MIA 4-2
          L vs LAD 4-2
          W vs LAD 5-3
          W vs LAD 7-3

          Mullins, CF - 6 GP (84), 20 AB (298), .300 AVG (.228), .650 SLG (.419), 2 HR (11), 2B (16), 4 RBI (39), 4 R (46)

          Irvin, SP - 2 GS (10), 11.2 IP (57.2), 8 H (53), 2.31 ERA (3.28), 2.3 BB/9 (2.8), 6.9 K/9 (6.9)

          Coloumbe, RP - 4 G (38), 2 HLD (16), 4 IP (41), 4 H (30), 0.00 ERA (1.98), 0.0 BB/9 (3.1), 6.8 K/9 (7.7)

After the final game against the Dodgers, the Orioles make a trade to bolster their bullpen. They send 26 year old prospect, left-hander Easton Lucas to the A's, for rookie and Japanese flame thrower, Shinataro Fujinami. Fujinami, who began the year as a starting pitcher, recently converted to a relief role after posting an 8.50 ERA in his first 17 career starts. In his 7 relief appearances this season, Fujinami has an impressive 1.92 ERA, while striking out 12.2 batters per 9. He comes equipped with a 4-Seamer that touches triple digits, and a devastating splitter to go along with it. Orioles hope that he can find a way to control those pitches, as he averages over 4 walks per 9 innings. "Fuji", as they call him, will slot into the middle of the Orioles bullpen, ahead of 8th inning man Yenier Cano, as well as All Star Closer Felix Bautista. Michael Givens was sent to the 15 day IL with forearm tightness in order to open up the spot on the MLB roster. Josh Lester was taken off the 40-Man.

            2024 Washington Nationals

I forgot to mention that, prior to the Marlins’ series, Cade Cavalli broke his forearm and will miss 2-3 months. Cavalli had recently been sent back to AAA, and it is unlikely he will be pitching in the MLB again this season.

Game One: MacKenzie Gore (4-4, 6.06) vs Aaron Nola (2-8, 4.23)
Both starters were strong in this one, with Nola giving up the first runs of the game in the fifth following a triple by CJ Abrams and base hits from Brandon Nimmo and Andrew Vaughn. Nola would leave after five innings, as the Nationals were able to get his pitch count up. He gave up the two runs on five hits, walking two and striking out five. MacKenzie Gore was even more impressive, going six innings, giving up a run (sac fly from Austin Riley) on five hits, no walks and six strikeouts. Gore could have come back out for the seventh, but Dave Martinez wanted to turn to his strongest bullpen arms to lock down this game. They would do just that, with Victor Arano, Aaron Bummer, and Trevor Rosenthal each pitching shutout innings. Washington’s 11 game losing streak has finally come to an end and they win their first game in the month of June, and the month is halfway over already.

Game Two: Lucas Giolito (4-4, 4.95) vs Spencer Strider (1-4, 3.66)
Lucas Giolito got off to a shaky start, culminating in a three run home run from Ronald Acuna Jr to put Atlanta up 3-0 after one inning. Giolito would settle in and go six innings, giving up one more run on a double from Ozzie Albies while walking one and striking out five. Spencer Strider dominated the Nats, as he usually does, but would only go four innings due to a high pitch count. He gave up one run, a Keibert Ruiz home run, while walking one and striking out six. Huascar Ynoa would pitch the last three innings, only allowing one hit and one walk while striking out three. The Nats were able to save their bullpen by using Joan Adon for two innings. He would give up a run on two hits, with a walk and a strikeout thrown in. It was a 5-1 victory for Atlanta but the game never felt even that close, as Washington could not mount any offense whatsoever.

Game Three: Stephen Strasburg (5-5, 2.75) vs Mike Soroka (8-2, 3.70)
The Nationals took a 1-0 lead when Keibert Ruiz homered in the second, but Atlanta was able to rally with two runs in the fifth. Matt Olson hit a solo home run to tie the game, and Kyle Farmer singled to score Brad Miller. The Braves scored a third run in the seventh on a fielder’s choice from Benny Montgomery, and while Luis Garcia homered off of AJ Minter in the ninth, Washington would take the 3-2 loss. Stephen Strasburg went five innings, giving up two runs on four hits, walking one and striking out four. Josiah Gray went two innings, giving up a run and Hunter Harvey pitched a scoreless inning. Washington had a chance in the eighth, loading the bases off of Raisel Iglesias, but could not get a run to score.

Game Four: Felipe Escalona (3-2, 4.12) vs Max Fried (6-1, 2.81)
Anthony Rizzo was reinstated from the IL. Miguel Carrara was optioned to AAA.

Felipe Escalona had his shortest start so far, going just three innings and giving up four runs, all on two home runs from Matt Olson. Escalona had command troubles from the get-go, and it was clear that it was not going to change. He would be replaced by Joan Adon, who gave three solid innings of relief, followed by Car Edwards Jr, who threw two perfect innings. The Nationals were able to make it a one run game in the ninth, thanks to home runs from Kike Hernandez and Mitch Haniger (two home runs in the late innings for him), but were unable to find the tying run.

Washington (32-40) will finally be able to play in front of the home fans as they will host San Francisco (33-39) in a three game set.

              Cardinals-6
              Pirates-2

              Game 3
              Cardinals-6
              Pirates-5

              Pirates losing streak reaches six

The Pirates have now been swept in back to back series first by the Guardians and most recently by their division foes, the St. Louis Cardinals.

The worst defeat came in game three after Pittsburgh got out to an early 5-0 lead only to lose 6-5 in extra innings. The Pirates strong April is now long in the past and their May Stuggles (1-7) are what is looming over their heads.

The Pirates will look to right the ship as they head to Baltimore to close out the road trip against the Orioles (20-18/3rd AL East).

Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise Mode Discussion

Haven't updated in a bit and then decided to just wait until the end of the regular season to do an update.

Cardinals clinch NL Central for 4th straight year as 2027 regular season comes to an end

The Cardinals (94-68) clinched their 4th straight NL Central Division title clearing the 2nd place Pirates by 9 games. This is quite the feat for a team that lost Nolan Arenado not even mid-way thru the season and still found the offense to put up runs.

The Cardinals once again though find themselves playing in the Wild Card Series as the Braves (105) and Padres (101) had more wins on the season. The Cardinals will be facing the Phillies who grabbed the final wild card spot over the Cubs on the last day of the season. The Phillies finished the season 81-81.

The other wild card spots belong to the surprising Pirates and the Dodgers. The Pirates are the top wild card spot and will host the Dodgers in the 3 game series.

On the American League side of the things, the Orioles are the top team with 104 wins. Next is the White Sox and the final division winner was the Angels. The wild card spots belong to the Twins, Astros, and Rangers.

The Cardinals did have guys take home hardware after the regular season. Tommy Edman and Dylan Carlson won gold gloves and Ryan Helsley was the National League Reliever of the Year.

So now its on to the Wild Card Series. The Cardinals playoff runs have gotten shorter after making a run to the World Series in 2024. In 2025 they lost in the NLCS and last year they lost in the NLDS. Here's hoping that trend doesn't continue and they exit in the wild card series.

Cardinals go into playoffs without Jack Flaherty

The Cardinals will be without NL Cy Young Candidate Jack Flaherty for at least the Wild Card Series. Flaherty injured his elbow mid way thru September and could be out until the NLCS if the Cardinals make it that far.

The Cardinals postseason roster for the Wild Card Series will be:

                Pitchers

                Mike Soroka
                Reid Detmers
                Matthew Liberatore
                Dakota Hudson
                Cooper Hjerpe

                Zack Thompson
                Liam Hendricks
                Alex Reyes
                Michael King
                A.J. Puk
                Jordan Hicks
                Genesis Cabrera
                Ryan Helsley

                Lineup

                SS - Tommy Edman
                RF - Dylan Carlson
                1B - Nolan Gorman
                LF - Tyler O'Neill
                DH - Alec Burleson
                3B - Oswald Peraza
                CF - Harrison Bader
                CA - Ivan Herrera
                2B - Brendan Donovan

                Bench

                CA - Dalton Rushing
                IF - Edmundo Sosa
                IF/OF - Jordan Walker
                OF - Magnerius Sierra

Mike Soroka will get the ball in Game 1 of the Wild Card Series against the Phillies with Reid Detmers going in Game 2. Game 3 is undecided.

2023 World Series - Game 2 - Cardinals vs Astros (Cardinals lead series, 1-0)

Jack Flahtery would pitch a great game and the Cardinals would take a 3-0 lead into 8th inning but the bullpen would give up 2 runs. Bottom of the 9th manager Oli Marmol would leave Cabrera in to pitch to Yordan Alvarez and he would hit a HR to tie the game. The game would go into extra innings and the Astros would score a run in the bottom of the 11th to walk off the win.

2023 World Series - Game 3 - Cardinals vs Astros (series tied 1-1)

Adam Wainwright would once again dominate, pitching 7 innings of shutout baseball and the Cardinals would get 5 runs over those 8 innings. Astros would get a run in the 9th but that would be all as the Cardinals would secure a 5-1 win.

Wainwright is now 4-0 in the playoffs with a minuscule 0.58 ERA. The Cardinals have not offered Wainwright a contract for 2024 and with his dominance in the playoffs, there is speculation he will not retire after the World Series.

2023 World Series - Game 4 - Cardinals vs Astros (Cardinals lead series, 2-1)

                  Jordan Montgomery vs Luis Garcia

Phillies dominate Game 1 win in Wild Card Series

Despite their record, the Phillies looked to be the better team in Game 1 of the Wild Card Series as they beat up the Cardinals 7-2 in Busch Stadium. The Phillies lead the best of 3 series 1 game to none.

Mike Soroka didn't have his best stuff tonight but got thru 5 innings giving up 3 runs on 7 hits with 3 strikeouts and 2 walks. The Cardinals were down 3-2 when Soroka left. Then the bullpen exploded, well Michael King exploded. After Zack Thompson got thru the 6th, King would give up 3 runs on 4 hits without recording an out in the 7th inning and the Cardinals would be down 6-2. The pen would give up one more in the 8th on a Trea Turner RBI double and that would get us to the final score.

Offensively the Cardinals had their fair share of chances against starter Zack Wheeler and the bullpen but hitting into 4 double plays and striking out at key moments just eliminated any chance for the Cardinals to get back into the ballgame or win the ball game. Ivan Herrera and Harrison Bader accounted for the two RBIs. Tyler O'Neill who was hitting cleanup struck out 3 times with runners in scoring position. His non strikeout at bat was a double play.

The Cardinals now have to win two straight if they want to keep their season alive. But if the bats are as bad as they were in Game 1, this series is all but over unless the pitching staff keeps the 2nd best batting average lineup in the National League off the bases and from crossing home plate.

Game 2 will feature Reid Demters for the Cardinals versus Bailey Falter for the Phillies.

Reid Detmers helps pitch Cardinals into winner take all Game 3 with Game 2 win

The Cardinals and Phillies will play a deciding Game 3 of their Wild Card Series as Reid Detmers was phenomenal on the mound helping the Cardinals to a 4-1 win in Game 2.

Detmers went 7 innings allowing 1 run on 7 hits with 5 strikeouts and 3 walks. Jordan Hicks would pitch a perfect 8th and Ryan Helsley would save the game with an immaculate inning in the 9th.

Offensively the Cardinals jumped on Bailey Falter early scoring 3 runs in the first, but would only manage one more run the rest of the way, as they're struggles reared its ugly head with strikeouts and poor at bats with runners in scoring position. Thankfully the pitching was strong enough to keep the game from ever getting closer than the 3 runs.

The Cardinals will turn to LHP Matthew Liberatore to start Game 3. Not sure who the Phillies will have start.

Cardinals 2027 season ends with embarrassing Game 3 loss

The Cardinals 2027 season came to an end Friday night as they fell to the Phillies 13-3 in Game 3 of their Wild Card Series. The Cardinals have continued the trend of exiting the playoffs earlier than the previous year and if this trend continues, the Cardinals will not make the playoffs in 2028.

Nothing went right for the Cardinals last night and it started with Matthew Liberatore leaving the game just 4 pitches into his start with a shoulder injury. Dakota Hudson came in for relief and only lasted an inning giving up 5 runs on 6 hits with 3 walks and no strikeouts. Cooper Hjerpe started the 2nd inning but wasn't much better as he didn't get thru the inning giving up 3 runs on 3 hits, two of them being solo homeruns with no strikeouts and a walk. It only got worse from there. The Cardinals would head into the bottom of the 5th inning trailing 11-0. They would cut the lead to 11-2 thanks to a Harrison Bader two run double in the 6th, but the Phillies would get those two runs back in the top of the 7th when Rhys Hoskins hit a mammoth 474 ft homerun off of reliever Michael King to make it 13-2. The Cardinals would scratch out a run in the bottom of the 9th when Nolan Gorman went deep with one out, but that would the only offense of the inning as O'Neill struck out and Burleson lined out to end the game.

A season full of promise ending in the Wild Card Series is beyond disappointing. Yes they lost Arenado, yes they lost Flaherty for the playoffs, but underacheiving seasons by guys like O'Neill and Brendan Donovan really hampered this team. Not to mention the relief pitching struggling down the stretch and the playoffs.

The Cardinals have a big offseason coming up. Their entire managerial staff is gone as their contracts all ended, they have a ton of free agents and player options that they most likely will need to replace. Nolan Arenado was in the final year of his deal and if he doesn't retire the Cardinals must decide if they bring him back. Of the 26 man playoff roster only 8 players are guaranteed to return in 2028.

So many decisions to be had this winter. Hopefully they make the right choices that put this team back in playoff contention and back to the point of making a deep October run instead of bowing out early.

The Atlanta Braves are your 2027 World Series Champions

The Atlanta Braves defeated the Los Angeles Angels in 6 games to win the World Series in 2027. The Braves were one of, if not the, best team in baseball this year, so it stands to reason that they would win the World Series.

Also of note the Pittsburgh Pirates made it to the NLDS this year, losing to the eventual World Series Champion Braves. The Pirates shocked everyone by first making the playoffs and then getting to the NLDS. It will be interesting to see what they do this winter.

Below is the 2027 season wrap up.

Cardinals re-sign Ryan Helsley to a 2 year deal

The Cardinals and RHP Ryan Helsley have agreed to a 2 year/$15MM deal. The 33 year old right hander is coming off his 3rd straight All-Star appearance and was the NL Reliever of the Year last year with 55 saves.

Helsley who battled arm issues in 2026 was given the shorter length contract due to the concern of his arm issues as he also spent time of the IL this year, although his arm troubles were less significant than 2026.

Nevertheless, this is a good start to the offseason as the Cardinals signed their closer for the upcoming season and possibly 2029 provided he stays healthy and continues to perform at a high level.

Several Cardinals decline their player options to become free agents

As expected the Cardinals saw several players decline their player options and choose free agency this winter.

Alex Reyes, Tyler O'Neill, Reid Detmers, and Michael King all declined their options and will test the market. The Cardinals will likely be in negotiations with Reyes and Detmers, providing the market. King and O'Neill were expected to decline their options and the thought is the Cardinals will not pursue bringing them back to St.Louis.

Braves re-sign Ozzie Albies and Red Sox re-sign Josh Hader

Two potential big market free agents have decided to re-sign with their current club instead of testing the free agent waters.

2B Ozzie Albies will return to the defending champion Braves on a 6 year/$142MM contract.

LHP Josh Hader will return to the Red Sox on a 3 year/$97MM contract.

Albies re-signing with the Braves isn't all that surprising given their success as a team and his success playing there.

However, it was thought that Hader would at least test the market this winter instead of just re-signing with the Red Sox. The Red Sox, who acquired Ohtani 3 years ago, have been nothing but a disappointment since that signing, failing to reach the playoffs in any of the seasons Ohtani's been on the roster. They do have good pieces around him and the free agent market is expected to be deep this winter, but again, thought Hader might test the waters given the on going need for left handed relief.
