The Cardinals boosted their pitching staff by re-signing RHP Jordan Hicks and LHP Reid Detmers.
Jordan Hicks signed to a one year $10M deal. The Cardinals attempted to sign the 31 year old long term, but he balked at that offer, including on the open market. At 31 years old, it seems that Hicks is banking on having a breakout year, free from injury, to cash in next offseason.
Reid Detmers is a good get for the Cardinals as now they keep their 1-2 punch with Flaherty and Detmers. Detmers signed a 2 year deal worth $36M, but there is a player option after this season. The 30 year old Detmers dealt with injuries last year and he's protected for another year if those injuries pop up again, or he struggles this year. If he has a breakout year, he can test the open market.
33 year old Alex Reyes has signed a 4 year deal worth $60.8M with the Houston Astros. Reyes who declined his player option with the Cardinals, wants to be the closer for a club, and he likely wasn't going to get that role in St.Louis with Ryan Helsley returning as well as Jordan Hicks. Reyes will help anchor an Astros bullpen that struggled to close games last year.
