Cardinals re-sign Jordan Hicks and Reid Detmers

The Cardinals boosted their pitching staff by re-signing RHP Jordan Hicks and LHP Reid Detmers.

Jordan Hicks signed to a one year $10M deal. The Cardinals attempted to sign the 31 year old long term, but he balked at that offer, including on the open market. At 31 years old, it seems that Hicks is banking on having a breakout year, free from injury, to cash in next offseason.

Reid Detmers is a good get for the Cardinals as now they keep their 1-2 punch with Flaherty and Detmers. Detmers signed a 2 year deal worth $36M, but there is a player option after this season. The 30 year old Detmers dealt with injuries last year and he's protected for another year if those injuries pop up again, or he struggles this year. If he has a breakout year, he can test the open market.

    Alex Reyes signs with Astros

33 year old Alex Reyes has signed a 4 year deal worth $60.8M with the Houston Astros. Reyes who declined his player option with the Cardinals, wants to be the closer for a club, and he likely wasn't going to get that role in St.Louis with Ryan Helsley returning as well as Jordan Hicks. Reyes will help anchor an Astros bullpen that struggled to close games last year.

Cardinals bring back Oliver Marmol on 3 year deal

The Cardinals and manager Oliver Marmol agreed on a new 3 year deal worth $9M. There was discussion as to whether the Cardinals would bring him back given the regression in playoff run, but Marmol has led the Cards to 4 straight NL Central Division titles and 5 trips to the postseason in his 6 year tenure.

The Cardinals also brought back 3rd base coach Skip Schmacher. They did make changes at pitching coach and hitting coach. And brought in Bob Melvin to coach 1st base and provide a sort of mentorship for Marmol.

      Cardinals re-sign Nolan Arenado

The Cardinals and Nolan Arenado have agreed to a one year $15M contract. There was speculation the 36 year old may retire after tearing his ACL last year, but Arenado decided he wasn't ready to hang up his cleats.

The Cardinals debated about bringing him back, but for a club that struggled offensively last year after his injury, they felt they should at least bring him into Spring Training and see how things work out. Arenado was slashing .274/.360/.592 at the time of his injury last year.

Many believed that the Cards would either keep Oswald Peraza at 3rd or finally turn the reigns over to Jordan Walker. But the Cards are thinking Peraza can play 2nd base since Brendan Donovan was allowed to hit the market and Jordan Walker continues to be inconsistent at the plate, something the Cardinals definitely don't need as they had their fill of inconsistent plate appearances last year.

Cardinals sign Steven Kwan and Luis Arraez

The Cardinals are making it a point to address their offensive struggles of last season this winter. They brought back Nolan Arenado when many thought that they'd move on from him if he didn't retire. But to add to the addition/re-signing of Arenado, the Cardinals have signed LF Steven Kwan and 2B Luis Arraez to bolster the offense.

Steven Kwan has signed a 3 year deal for $28.5M. Kwan hit just over .300 for the Guardians last year and while he doesn't present the pop in the bat that Tyler O'Neill did, he does provide a consistent bat that is going to make contact, get hits, and not strike out.

Luis Arraez signed a one year $11.5M contract to join the Cardinals. Arraez hit .300 on the nose for the Marlins last year. To go along with his .300 average, Arraez also hit 22 homeruns with 86 RBIs. Arraez will take over for Brendan Donovan who the Cardinals have all but moved on from at 2nd base.

The interesting thing now is that with the signing of Arraez and the re-signing of Nolan Arenado, where does that leave Oswald Peraza? Does he actually get moved to the bench? Does Arraez or Arenado become the DH and Peraza takes their fielding spot? If so, then what about Alec Burleson and Jordan Walker?

Interesting to see where the Cardinals go from here.

        Notable signings around the league

        Red Sox - C Adley Rutschmann (10 year - $350M)
        Braves - SP Sandy Alcantara
        Padres - SP Hunter Greene
        A's - SP Nick Lodolo
        Rockies - SP Mackenzie Gore
        Dodgers - C J.T. Realmuto

What year are you in now? And do you play all 162 games every season. If so that’s impressive.

Not sure how much of a secret it is. It stands to reason that you will get further along in a game by playing it.

Well no kidding… It must be the only game you play. I was just asking how you get through multiple 162 game seasons without simulating.

It’s the game I play the most, but I do play others.

I just play the game. I’m not sure what other answer there is for how I get thru seasons without simming.

I start the day the game launches. I don’t wait for rosters or anything as I do my own, and I just keep playing.

Maybe 2-3 games per day during the work week, maybe 6-8 total on a weekend if I am not binging.

I'll be honest, while I DO play some other games, this year has been quite bleak for me in terms of new game releases so MLB has been my mainstay most of the year (though I thoroughly enjoyed a full 90+ hour playthrough of Octopath Traveler 2 this year). The only other sports game I play is Madden, and I only dabble in that these days.

And yes, I play this game year-round as it is the only franchise mode I enjoy.
Play the games you love, not the games you want to love.
