Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise Mode Discussion

    June 3-5, 2024: WEST TEXAS (31-33) @ FLAGSTAFF (27-36)
    Stadium: AutoZone Park (Capacity: 13,406)

    June 3: Bison 3, Hops 2
    June 4: Hops 9, Bison 3
    June 5: Bison 5, Hops 0

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops returned home and dropped two of three to the West Texas Bison in a matchup of fourth place teams.

The Bison opened up their series in Flagstaff with a 3-2 victory on Monday evening. A three-run seventh inning keyed the win for the visitors.

Flagstaff would grab a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth on Roberto Geronimo's 12th home run on the season, a solo shot off of Dan Bell.

West Texas would respond immediately in the top of the seventh off of Hops starter Russell Fluty. Alfonso Ryan hit a two-run home run, his tenth on the year, and Phelps hit a two-out RBI single to put the Bison up 3-1.

Emmitt Hampton would draw the Hops closer in the eighth with a solo home run of his own, his eighth on the year, to cut it to 3-2. The Hops would have a great chance to tie in the bottom on the ninth off of closer Matthew Ball. Art Mason doubled to open the inning. After Josh Ortega grounded out to third, David Benitez hit a rocket to left, but it was hit so hard that Art Mason had to stop at third. Robbie Westbrook then worked the count full before smashing right right at first baseman Alfonso Ryan, who turned a 3-6-3 double play to end the ball game.

Russell Fluty (1-5) took the loss, but was once again very good. He allowed the three seventh inning runs, but scattered eight hits while striking out two and walking one. Dan Bell (3-5) picked up the win, throwing seven innings and allowing one run on five hits while striking out five and walking one.

On Tuesday evening, the Hops rallied from an early three-run hole to win going away, 9-3. Bradley York lead the way, going 2 for 4 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored to help pace the victory.

Ryan Pressley, one of the best pitchers in the IBL, struggled in the first inning, giving up two home runs as the Bison went up 3-0. Quentin Henley (8) opened the game with a solo home run and Bobby Rayburn (13) hit a two-run home run. After that Pressley would settle down and would not allow another run. He went seven innings, allowing the three runs on right hits while striking out ten and walking one as he improved to (6-3).

The Hops responded in a big way in the bottom of the first off of West Texas starter Carmen Sixto, scoring five times, capped off by a Bradley York three-run home run, his eighth on the year. They would chase Sixto in the second as Grant Mitchell blasted a two-run home run. Sixto (5-5) went one plus innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits. Josh Ortega greeted reliever Cabrera with a solo home run, his 15th on the year, to make it 8-3.

The Hops would get a Forrest Owen RBI single in the fifth to go up 9-3.

Flagstaff has struggled offensively all season but has now scored ten runs on Sunday and nine on Tuesday as they look to get things rolling as the calendar turns to June.

In Wednesday afternoon's finale, the Bison used a four-run fourth inning to power to a 5-0 victory and a series win. Geraldo Parra tossed a complete game four-hit shutout, striking out five to pick up the well deserved win.

The Bison broke a scoreless tie in the fourth off of Geradlo Rodriguez by scoring four times, all with no outs. Alfonso Ryan singled to open the inning and Bobby Rayburn doubled. David Petrovski then singled to center to score both runners and give the visitors the early lead. Earl Phelps then crushed the first pitch that he saw into the bleachers in right to make it 4-0, his tenth on the season.

West Texas would add a run in the ninth on a solo home run from Julio Padilla.

Geraldo Rodriguez (1-2) pitched well, but took the loss. He went six innings, allowing the four runs on eight hits, while striking out four and walking one.

Flagstaff had no extra base hits in the game.

The Hops will have Thursday off before hosting ML West leading Salt Lake in a big weekend series for the Hops. They can get right back in the race if they can sweep the slumping Chukars.

Trades: The Hops have sent 31-year-old starting pitcher Ramon Garcia (87 OVR, B POT) to Chandler in exchange for 28-year-old shortstop Ryan Kelly (85 OVR, B POT). Garcia, who came over at the trade deadline last season, has not lived up to the expectations in Flagstaff. Kelly was stuck behind star Scotty North while hitting .343 last season in 59 games.

The Hops have recalled starting pitcher Juro Yamaguchi from Triple-A Albuquerque and optioned reliever Abraham Lopes to Albuquerque.

Around the League: Henderson's Nino Soriano (6-2) tossed a compete game three-hit shutout as the Silver Knights took care of rival Las Vegas 6-0. Soriano struck out eight and walked two in the victory. Albert Zambrano went 3 for 4 with a double and drove in two for the Knights.

Salt Lake snapped an eight game losing streak as they used a six-run sixth inning to power past Colorado Springs 7-3. Derek Hills went 3 for 5 with a double, triple and two RBIs to help power the Chukars to the victory.

Chandler won their ninth straight game on Wednesday evening to improve to an IBL best (43-19). The defending champs defeated Rio Rancho 10-5. The Chiefs handed Rollie Flingers (10-2) just his second loss on the season, roughing him up for six runs (five earned) on 12 hits in five innings. Stanton Brickman went 3 for 4 with a double, home run (13), two RBIs and three runs scored in the victory.

      2025 Pittsburgh Pirates 05/26-05/28

Overall Record:40-16 (1st NL Central/11.5 over St. Louis

      Game Results

      Game 1
      Pirates-1
      Red Sox-0

      Game 2
      Pirates-11
      Red Sox-3

      Game 3
      Pirates-4
      Red Sox-1

      Pirates sweep Red Sox

With the sweep of the Red Sox, the Pirates became the first team in 2025 to reach 40 wins. The Minnesota Twins are just win from reaching that milestone as well (39-17). The Twins have been the hottest team in May as they have lost just three times in th month with just two days to go.

The Pirates sweep of the Red Sox is the team's eighth already in the early party of the 25' season. The only game that was really in question was game one where the Pirates managed just two hits. Luckily, one of those was a sixth inning homerun by Oneil Cruz, his ninth of the year. The Pirates pitching staff led by Blake Snell (7 IP 4 H 8 SO 0 R) completed the shutout, which was also their eighth of the season.

The Pirates scored double digit runs for just the second time in game two of the Red Sox series. The final run total of eleven tied the Pirates season high (11-1 over Seattle 05/12). Honestly, the Pirates could have scored more. They ended up getting 2 in the first inning but could have/should have had more. In that inning, the Pirates were patient at the plate as they caused Red Sox starter Garrett Whitlock to throw 38 pitches in the opening frame. During the inning, the Pirates loaded the bases with just one out and only one of those runners would score and that was on a walk to reload the bases, that time with two outs.

After that, Pittsburgh just continued to score and hit. Three of those hits were homeruns by Anthony Santander (14), Yoennis Sherry (6) and Oneil Cruz (10).

The Pirates then went on to win game three, 4-1 for the sweep.

THe Pirates will now finish off May and enter June with a four game series in Colordado to face the Rockies (23-33/5th NL West).

          Well....

My 3 season Brewers rebuild/retool ended with an unceremonious first round exit to the Braves. This is now 2 iterations of the Show in a row (Athletics in '22, Brewers in '23) that did not end up in a World Series appearance.

          2 things I've learned.

1)The playoff games seem to get a little harder these past 2 years of the show, which is definitely a good thing.

          2) Star power in the lineup is important. I spent all my money on pitching, which is not a bad thing, but I struggled to get the really big/HR hit when I need one in the playoffs.

On to '24 and the next franchise challenge.

Offense and POTM honors highlight Pirates transition to June

The Pirates and Rockies battled it out in Colorado as the Pirates took the 3-1 series victory as the calendar changed to June. The Pirates scored their season best 28 runs in their four game set vs. Colorado and in contrast, they also gave up 28 in the series.

The Pirates won the first three games by one run a piece, 8-7, 4-3, and 6-5 and they lost the last game, 13-10.

The 2024 and so far, the 2025 season has been all about the pitching staff for the Pirates. Julio Urias won the Cy Young for the Pirates in 2024 and currently, in 2025, Jack Flaherty and Blake Snell look poised to bring the Pirates their second consecutive award. However, in the Rockies series, the pitchers took a backseat to explosive offenses on both sides.

The Pirates also had two players win player of the month honors in May. Flaherty won the NL pitcher of the month award (5-0/2.13 ERA 38 SO) and Yoennis Sherry put his hat in the NL Rookie of the year pile (.255 AVG 4 HR 15 RBI).

The Pirates will look to extend their MLB dominance as they head to Texas to take on the Rangers (29-32/2nd AL West).

It's all good, my own fault as a cocky GM !

I've narrowed '24 down to these choices.....

                Miami
                Colorado
                Washington

There is an outside chance of it being San Diego.....with a selling off of high priced players and doing a compete rebuild.

I definitely like the challenge of the rebuild.

Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise Mode Discussion

Started my 1990s Cubs franchise - A few pics from the home opener. Rookie Mike Harkey got the home opener honors after Greg Maddux had the season opener. Harkey got the complete game shutout and helped his own cause with what turned out to be the game winner. Ryne Sandberg hit a solo HR late to add support.

90s rosters credit to Jim Myers - For the purpose of my personal franchise, I simmed seven seasons and exported the players back to the base file, so when I started my franchise the players would have career stats and everyone wouldn't be rookies or getting their first MLB milestones.

This is also a rebrand and realignment to get the divisions as close to 1990 as possible. Cubs and Cards are in the NL East, Reds and Astros in the NL West, Atlanta was moved to the NL Central and Milwaukee in the AL East. The league also welcomed the Salt Lake City Bees to the AL West, Nashville Sounds, Las Vegas Aces and Washington Senators to the NL Central8d84e929-6d0e-42d2-b01e-a259ed98acb3.jpg3c124f62-26b0-4cc3-9ad5-ce2c8f86f2f4.jpgb592e139-06f1-4340-8caf-634d52d8c8c7.jpge779ed1c-365e-43e4-a0b8-250cc0c721b2.jpgdc37b7e0-2be5-4a3b-af6e-ff4c8771d732 (2).jpg

Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise Mode Discussion

In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened...

....I have completed my 2024 season, finally.

However, unlike the '88 Dodgers, I did not win the World Series. The Nationals finished 77-85, good for last in the NL East. The Dodgers did, however, win the 2024 World Series against the Chicago White Sox.

There isn't much to say about the rest of 2024, the Nationals crawled to the finish line with a plethora of injuries to key players, but they did get some nice looks at key prospects and also saw younger players like Cade Cavalli bounce back and take a big step forward.

Mitch Haniger ended up taking home the NL MVP honors, finishing the year at .279/.317/.957 with 59HR and 118RBI.

Washington's first round pick from 2022, Felipe Escalona, made 25 starts in 2024, finishing with a record of 8-10 and an ERA of 4.79. The Nationals saw enough from Escalona to gamble on a 10 year/136.4M contract instead of renewing his rookie deal. There were some back and forth discussions, as Escalona was set on taking another year worth 100,000 in an effort to get an even bigger deal, but was persuaded to sign quickly after becoming a free agent.

Another key piece that splashed into the Free Agent market was Keibert Ruiz, who quickly resigned with DC after they offered him a six year deal worth about 60M.

Josiah Gray, who was originally planned to be left to the Free Agent market, ended up being re-signed later to a five year deal.

Washington did not really make many moves to bring in outside pieces in Free Agency, although they did reach out to Pedro Lopez, Sonny Gray, Seranthony Dominguez, and Dylan Floro. The Nationals feel like they have a good core group, and their biggest setback in 2024 was the injury bug. They did claim RP Tejay Antone off waivers and picked up RF D.J. Stewart and RP Ryan Rolison in the Rule 5 draft.

And with that, we look forward to 2025! It should be an interesting year for the NL East. The Braves saw ace Max Fried leave to join the Cardinals in St. Louis, but they still remain the favorite to win the division. The Mets, who were within four games of Atlanta late in the year last year, bolstered their pitching by signing Shane Bieber to a massive ten year contract, and also added Clay Holmes as their closer. Miami also improved their pitching staff by trading for Eduardo Rodriguez and adding Jonathan Loasiga in Free Agency.

On the real life side of things, I'm not sure how I will be updating this season. My wife is expecting our first child in a few weeks so I'm guessing I will be pretty busy, or not if the little guy sleeps like I did when I was born. Either way, I will continue my Nationals rebuild (or re-rebuild if this season does not go well) and update when I can! Season four, let's go!

                      June 7-9, 2024: SALT LAKE (33-33) @ FLAGSTAFF (30-36)
                      Stadium: AutoZone Park (Capacity: 13,406)

                      June 7: Hops 6, Chukars 2
                      June 8: Hops 3, Chukars 1
                      June 9: Hops 10, Chukars 0

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - Flagstaff completed a sweep of first-place Salt Lake this weekend, outscoring the Chukars 19-3 and maybe signaling that they are about to turn their season around.

The Hops opened up this key series with a big 6-2 victory over the Chukars. Grant Mitchell went 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs to help lead the way to the series opening victory.

The Chukars would grab a 1-0 lead off of Alex Farmer in the second on a solo home run from Rafael Geronimo, his seventh on the year. An RBI double from Emmitt Hampton in the bottom of the third got Flagstaff on the board. Roberto Geronimo followed that with an RBI groundout, scoring Ryan Kelly, to give the Hops a 2-1 lead.

Salt Lake would tie it up in the fourth on Richie Guerrero's eighth home run on the season, a solo shot.

Flagstaff would retake the lead in the seventh on a Forrest Owen two-run home run, his third on the year, off of reliever Dan Walker. Grant Mitchell would add a two-run home run in the eighth to make it 6-2.

Alex Farmer (9-2) was excellent again. The ML leader in ERA allowed two runs on five hits in seven innings of work, striking out eight. Oliver Benedict got a six out save, his fourth, to close out the ballgame.

Afterwards, manager Matt Blake heaped praise on his centerfielder Grant Mitchell. “He has a role on this club, and he is filling it. He is making a case to get more at bats and more playing time and we love his ability to fill in all the outfield positions and even play some first base for us.”

Mitchell saw some time in Flagstaff 2022, playing 23 games for the Hops, but spent all of last season in Triple-A. He is hitting .295 with four home runs and 11 RBIs in 61 at bats in 2024.

On Saturday afternoon, Juro Yamaguchi returned to the rotation and tossed a gem as the Hops defeated Salt Lake 3-1. Yamaguchi tossed eight shutout innings, allowing just three hits, while striking out five and walking two, as he picked up his first win of 2024 (1-6).

The Hops grabbed a lead in the fourth inning on an Emmitt Hampton solo home run, his ninth on the year. They would extend that lead to 3-0 in the seventh on a Bradley York two-run home run, his ninth on the year.

Salt Lake would get one back in the ninth off of closer Vic Miller as J.P. Grant hit a solo home run to right. Miller picked up the save, his 13th, but once again struggled, giving up two hits and walking a batter, but getting Richie Guerrero to bounce back to the mound with two runners on, to end the ballgame.

On Sunday afternoon, the Hops crushed the Chukars 10-0 to complete the three game sweep. Russell Fluty pitched the best game of his young career, throwing eight shutout innings and allowing just one base hit.

The Hops would jump on the board in the first as Emmitt Hampton led off with a solo home run to right. They would extend that lead to 2-0 in the third on an Art Mason ground out, that scored Forrest Owen.

In the fifth, the Hops would blow the game open. Forrest Owen lined a one-out single to left. Emmitt Hampton then blasted a two-run home run to right, his second of the game and 11th on the season. The Chukars would dog to their bullpen, but that did not help as Art Mason and Josh Ortega hit back-to-back homers to put the Hops up 6-0.

The Hops would add four home runs in the eighth, three coming on a Forrest Owen three-run home run, his fourth.

Russell Fluty spun on gem, improving to (2-5), striking out three and walking only one, while only allowing a seventh inning leadoff single to Juan Corona.

Thor Odinson (4-5) took the loss, only going 4.2 innings and allowing six runs on eight hits, while striking out six.

Emmitt Hampton went 4 for 5 with a double, two home runs and three RBIs, while Forrest Owen went 3 for 4 with a double, homer and three RBIs to help power the Hops to their highest scoring game on the season.

Salt Lake continues to struggle and fell out of first place on Sunday afternoon as they are (4-19) in last 23 games.

The Hops (30-36) will now travel to red-hot Albuquerque (32-32) and then Salt Lake (33-33) next weekend.

Around the League: Chandler's Scotty North went 4 for 4 with two home runs and drove in three runs as Chandler hammered Rio Rancho 12-2 to complete the three-game sweep and run the Chiefs winning streak to ten.

San Antonio's McClendon tossed a complete game, four-hit shutout, striking out ten as the Javelinas defeated Fort Worth 8-0. The win stretched San Antonio's lead to four games over the Kings in the ML East.

Zach Dossett and Mike Anderson each homered as Chandler rallied from a 7-2 deficit to defeat Goodyear 10-7. The win pushed the Chiefs winning streak to 11 games, longest in the IBL this season.

West Texas' Alfonso Ryan went 4 for 5 with two home runs (12) and he drove in four as the Bison pounded Long Beach 13-3.

Pirates take competitive series over Rangers

Julio Urias has been good this year but to this point, he hasnt been as good as his CY Young winning 2024 season. He does lead the National League in strikeouts (100) with teammate Jack Flaherty just behind him (91). He also has a very good 2.60 ERA which is good enough for 11th in the league....so maybe its not him but regardless, he isnt getting the wins.

That trend continued in game one vs the Texas Rangers. The Rangers got on the board first, in the third inning when Adolis Garcia hit his tenth homerun of the season. They continued that trend as Marcus Semien hit his ninth in the fourth inning and Corey Seager hit his 11th, a two run shot in the sixth inning. At that point, the Rangers led 4-0 and that carried them to the victory as the Pirates' offense really struggled against Dane Dunning (2 hits in 6.2 innings) and the arms out of the bullpen, Paul Sewald and Nick Anderson.

Oddly enough, the Pirates started game two off in a very similar fashion as the Rangers' game one. The Pirates got a two run HR in the second inning from Endy Rodriguez (#4) then Oneil Cruz went back to back #12 and finally, CJ Cron hit his 10th in the third inning to give the Pirates their own 4-0 lead. Now, the Rangers did a better job of mounting a comeback and in the seventh inning, they got within one with a score of 5-4. Luckily, the Pirates were able to add on in the eighth and eventually won 8-4.

Game three went into extras after Anthony Santander hit his 17th homerun of the season in the 9th inning to tie the game at three. Bryan Reynolds then hit his 9th in the 10th inning to score two and David Bednar closed it out for his 23rd of the season as he tries to push toward his third consecutive reliever of the year award.

The Pirates will now finish out their road trip as they head to Los Angeles to take on the Dodgers (36-27/1st NL West/2.0 over Arizona) in a three game weekend matchup.

Tough news for the Nationals in just their fourth game of the regular season: Brady House, who beat out CJ Abrams for a roster spot this year, suffered a broken leg while sliding into second base and will miss 1-2 months.

House was selected over CJ Abrams following Spring Training, as the Nationals really want to see how he can perform at the major league level. He only played in 32 games in 2024 before being sent to AAA, allowing CJ Abrams to have a career year as the everyday SS.

Following the injury, Washington will once again turn to Abrams, recalling him from AAA Rochester. Abrams was not on the major league roster as the club kept Lucius Fox active, as they did not want to lose him through waivers. If Abrams performs as he did in 2024, it will be hard to replace him once Brady House returns.

Pirates win another closely contested series

The Pittsburgh Pirates won their fifth series in a row over the weekend. The series win also brought an end to their roadtrip and Pittsburgh finished that trip at 7-3.

The Pirates offense struggled the last two games of the series as they had just a combined five hits in the two.

The Pirates lost game three, a game in which they managed just a single hit off of Dustin May and his bullpen partners. That hit even came in the first inning and gave the Pirates their lone run of the game.

Pittsburgh now returns home for their first series matchup with the Reds (30-34/3rd NL Central).

The Mariachis grabbed the opener of a four game mid-week series with the Hops with a 5-1 victory on Monday evening. Thomas Estrada went 2 for 4 with two doubles and drove in three to help lead Albuquerque to the win.

For the second straight start, Ryan Pressley was touched up in the first inning, once again allowing three runs. Ryan Swearer led off with a bloop single to right. Reyes then doubled and Thomas Estrada lined a two-run double to left to make it 2-0. Former Hop Leandro Lugo then lined a bloop single to right to score Estrada to make it a three run lead.

The Mariachis would extend that lead to 5-0 in the fifth as Reyes, Estrada and Lugo hit back-to-back-to-back doubles.

Flagstaff would get a run back in the seventh on an RBI groundout by Forrest Owen that scored Bradley York with the lone Flagstaff run.

Jason Trojanowski (4-6) picked up the victory. He pitched 6.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits. He walked four and struck out five. Howard and Martinez would get the final eight outs without allowing a hit to finish off the Hops.
