Re: Possible Next Gen Screenshot of MLB The Show 24

I remember when they used to release "Fact Sheets" every year. It had a huge list of new features. I just for fun looked at the MLB 10 fact sheet, and it is actually a bit crazy to see how many new features launched and that is getting close to 15 years ago now.

It is definitely not progressing as much as it used to, I don't think anybody can question that. I still feel like I'm playing a PS4 game on a Ps5 with Stadium Creator as the only "next gen" thing. Baseball is my absolute favorite so it is frustrating.

It's honestly insane to me that people are comparing this to the show '19 and' 20 when these graphics can EASILY be compared to the show '08. Literally. Better lighting. Better framerate. That's about it. And that was 16 years ago.

I have zero idea as to what the size of the team is, but all I know is it is marketed as a AAA sports game priced at a AAA price point, so I hold it to a AAA standard. It seems the dev team simply does not have the resources to get AAA progression each year with the series. Fortunately, the game isn't in a terrible place, so it's not as toxic as the Madden situation was for years, but this series has definitely slowed down ever since the PS4 launch, really.

I'm not going to act like I know what the issue is. Is it Diamond Dynasty getting the most resources allocated to it? Is it managerial and/or structural issues within the team? Is it the fact that games have hit a point where a one-year cycle really shouldn't be a thing anymore?

Odds are that all 3 of those have some truth to them. I do feel for sports dev teams due to the short annual cycles they have. However, as I said before, the game is marketed and priced to me at a AAA rate, so I have to hold it to AAA standards.

Unfortunately, the game's lack of progression each release has me feeling it's not meeting those standards. Fortunately, the game has been on GamePass, so I don't personally have to worry about spending money directly on the game anymore. Unfortunately, baseball is my favorite sport, and this game plays well on the field, but it's lacked development in a lot of my key areas for so long that I hardly play it anymore despite getting it for "free" on GamePass.

I just want to see sports games get back to having features that make you go wow annually as they are not only creative, but they are done well and really add depth to the game. That has definitely not been the case with this series for a long time now. I can basically go back and play my PS4 launch copy of The Show and franchise mode is not much different at all, and it's definitely not because the mode is so deep they don't have room to add much more to it.
What also hurt this series was y2y saves. But I hope that doesnt deter Sony from trying to making another go at it some time in the future.

Re: Possible Next Gen Screenshot of MLB The Show 24

If there was a influencer who made videos like those that do about Diablo 4 from the Blizzard community. I think it would bring a graphical leap! If you played MLB The Show series long enough then yes you have not seen a graphical leap in years! and yes why the gameplay has improved it's still missing huge basic infield and outfield fundamentals that a casual baseball fan will miss!

So I think until MLB The Show get's one of those youtube influencers who is highly informed about the gameplay of baseball and calls them out instead of just getting your face scanned into the game and seeing who can hit the longest home run. This game will not see the improvements capable by the team and technology! Because they feel they have it dialed in!

I mean look what happened in the Madden community. It got so bad that EA was forced to make improvements. When I played Madden 24 I was impressed by the graphical leap and gameplay but I'm not a huge football fan so what looked good to me will be easily broken down by a vet from the madden community! as a vet from the MLB The Show community would destroy the last 4-5 iterations of MLB The Show.

And based on the screen shots Steve OS posted in his thread! It's safe to save your money and play 23 even if they don't have high fives animations when a player on the field scores a run and crosses home plate! No update to that since the beginning of the games entry LOL!

            Good luck!

I wonder if the development team wants to improve the graphics but is denied by people higher up in the company or the engine is holding them back in terms of how long it would take them to implement big graphical changes..

They're obviously capable of adding things like cloth physics to the uniforms and better overall visuals for outside the stadiums because some aspects of the graphics are very impressive.

Their shader for how the dirt reacts to cleats and balls hitting it is really nice. Their lighting is very solid too.

There's just other graphical aspects that don't match that quality and those aspects are big things like grass, player's faces (skin), and uniforms. Those are a large percentage of what we look at while we play the game.

Also, the Switch version has a horrible framerate while batting, which should be addressed. It negatively effects gameplay a lot. I don't care if they have to thin the crowd out and make 'em catatonic while batting to get a steadier framerate. They should do it.

It's also possible that they're just generally happy with how the game looks. And I only say generally because no artist or team is ever going to be 100% satisfied.

But we all see and notice different things. The clay look of the skin and jerseys? I notice it but it's not a big deal to me. For better or worse, I just see it as The Show's look. That's not to say I wouldn't be happy for any upgrades, but I'm not throwing my controller against the wall for them either.

I'd be really happy if they did a pass on all the stadiums and just updated the grass and dirt colors though - I think that alone would go a long way toward making things look fresh.

I mean, that has to be the case, right? I can't imagine any other reason why they would stick with the same player model and uniform template for 10 years. They have to know that the game has not improved graphically because they haven't mentioned any improvements since the move to current-gen besides the initial 4k/60fps announcement for 21. They used to dedicate an entire stream to graphics, and these days it doesn't even get a mention.

In the PS4 era I remember Ramone specifically said they reach "graphical maturity" around the 4th year on a new console gen. So I suppose there is some hope for this year. Maybe that's the reason for the lack of a tech test this year. Who knows. I'm just tired of being hopeful and getting let down every year in this regard.

Yep, but be careful what you say. Some people will jump on you for having this incredibly reasonable point of view.

I think so, just proposing it as a counter to the (also possible) idea that they've wanted to improve things but have been told no.

I remember the old graphic streams as well and their graphical department is super professional and went so in depth sometimes that Ramone sometimes had to halter them haha.

So please take those shackles off by ditching cross platform play and the old gen next year. I firmly believe they have been cooking something in the background for years waiting for the right moment. And in my opinion that should’ve been this year.

As long as they keep online cross platform play alive and don’t ditch the old gen we’re simply not gonna see any big graphical leaps.

Like Ramone used to say: “When its all set and done, reality is the best innovation.”

Fingers crossed, but this is my hope as well. Just today, I was thinking about this. I'm hoping that all this past dev cycle they were working away at updating graphics, engine, models, textures, etc. But instead of bringing all that this year for 24, they really want to hit the ground running, so decided to push it off to 25. This way they can keep plugging away at a true current gen release during this upcoming dev cycle.

                            It's my hope....

What would be the harm if SDS just told their fans of the game that they are indeed working on a major graphics update?
