Re: Showdown Thread
Man, I want to like this mode, and especially want the rewards.
I just tried again after taking a Showdown break. I still haven't beat the 1st Inning. I just tried the NL Central for the first time, and didn't get past the first boss. Tried to be patient vs Luis Castillo, but he pitched me really well. I made him throw a ton of pitches, but could only scratch out two runs. Frustrating.
Guess I'll keep tryin'!Comment

Re: Showdown Thread
Thanks for those tips, but that's exactly what I try to do. I won 2/3 of the challenges leading up to the first boss, and was forced to choose pitchers both times. I never had an opportunity to improve my hitters. I also always go for the contact boosts with the perks.
Honestly, I think it's my talent deficit!Comment

Re: Showdown Thread
Just tried the first inning showdown again. Thought I was short of where I wanted to be since I was at 6 runs so I played the second mini-boss. 64 OVR Wade Davis painting the corners like Maddux ruined the two-strike approach. I think I got one hittable pitch the entire time. One walk the whole time.Comment

Re: Showdown Thread
Just faced off for my 3rd time against Kenley Jansen as the final boss in 1st inning showdown. Manage to tie the game 15-15 with 3 outs and couldn’t get one more run.. ugghhh some of these challenges are so frustrating.Comment

Re: Showdown Thread
It does seem that Showdown is rigged in a lot of ways.
Sure I've beaten a few of them but have had my fair share of losses.
CPU fielding is way too good. Makes all the diving plays look routine.
I fly out to the warning track at an alarming rate. I think it wants to tease you into thinking you may get a HR to just rip your heart out each time.
Relievers throw over 50 pitchers and still aren't fatigued.
CPU Bronze pitchers pitch like Gold or Diamond pitchers.
Feel free to add to the list.Comment

I'm trying the 1st Inning again. Lost the Roy challenge...again. Won the closer challenge....again. Getting ready to do the Polo Grounds. I can't seem to hit that HR! I've had 3 inside the parkers not count. One they scored a triple. The other two were 3rd inning with the winning run scoring ahead of the HR hitter and they stop it right there.
Any tips on getting that elusive HR. I know hitting down the lines, but I can't seem to get it done.
Also, assuming I get past the first boss....it seems people in here are saying to skip the second boss, if you have a pretty good team already?Last edited by buziii; 04-04-2020, 04:27 PM.Comment

You nailed it! I experience those exact same things!

Re: Showdown Thread
Doing the AL Central Showdown and just lost the second moment because Lindor hit a ball to the wall, and my LF with his pre-loaded throw on the meter picked the ball up and stood and stared at the wall until the runner scored and I failed.
cool
edit: then i had one on veteran where all i had to do was hit a HR without giving one up against the Twins. had i think 7 squared up that went directly to fielders just like 2019. 105+ off the bat that were just hit directly at fielders. this is the stuff that makes everything look rigged.
personally, i think its the fact that i'm tuned for HoF and the PCI is so huge on veteran that your results are just so random. i normally tag berrios in anything offline i face him against and i was doing it here. i had 1 hit. 5 outs were 12, 11, 13, 12 and 12 which were down the middle with the inner peace perk lolololLast edited by papadell; 04-04-2020, 07:38 PM.Read my OS articles: https://www.operationsports.com/author/corydell/Comment

Re: Showdown Thread
Although I still have no expectation of winning, my latest 1st inning showdown run is my most successful so far. I am 6 for the first 6 missions. It says that I am 50% completed.
The last moment I did was against Alex Wood and the Dodgers and it too me 8 innings to get the 3 runs I needed.
So at least I have not lost stubs on this run.Comment

Re: Showdown Thread
So, I took a little different approach for a NL Central showdown run. (bear in mind I am a clean screen directional/classic guy)
The theory is that CPU pitchers tend to not "fear" lower level hitters as much higher end guys (so they'd throw a few more favorable pitches). So, as I completed missions, I did not add the majority of the gold/diamond guys I accrued to the starting lineup (I left them on the bench). I focused my lineup on good vision players as much as possible.
I rolled through the missions, only missing 2 of them, and got to Hader down 4 runs. I stuck with the approach, using a number of bronze/silver guys in my starting lineup...stashing a diamond and a couple of golds on my bench. It was still mighty tough, but the lower-end guys were finding a few more gaps, taking lots of pitches, and wearing Hader down. As "key moments" popped up and I needed some thunder, I had quality guys available to pinch hit.
It worked (at least the one time)...I completed my first divisional showdown with 4 outs left!
I think we've all learned that these Showdowns are a grind, you're going to be challenged (and need to focus on just wearing down the pitcher and getting baserunners). Now, whether my "theory" about low level hitters is correct...who knows?
BUT....I DO think the strategy of leaving a couple of BIG bats on the bench makes sense. It gives you flexibility in taking advantage of those moments where the pitcher has been worn down or his confidence lowered. Far too often when I'd put in my best hitters, I could tell I had him worn down only to have to wait till the lineup turned over (and by then....the pitcher had regained some confidence via outs).Play the games you love, not the games you want to love.Comment
