Yep, I went to Gamestop the day COD5 came out (around 10:45am or so) and was told the games weren't going to be delivered for at least another 30mins or so. Luckily the guy came within the next minute, and I watched the guy open all the boxes and such.

Funny, I used to manage a video store and we had releases 1-2 weeks in advance. I'm speaking from experience, not just out of my arse like most of you are.

Don't believe a word that comes out of Gamestop's mouthes. Normally, the "shipment" they are waiting for is from their own central distribution location that supplies all of their stores. No telling how long that center has had them. Normally, it's 1-2 weeks....just like I've said over and over again.

      It's only a video game.

Gamestop will have the games in their stores most likely this Friday.

I just saw this and all I can really say is that the employee could say no. You can't fault a customer for going in to ask about a game, you WANT to sell merchandise, correct? Maybe if your company hired people with any sort of knowledge of the department they work, they would know about street dates and letting titles out early. Blame yourselves and your idiotic employees if you get slapped with a fine for breaking date.

And this really is how it works, I've had many friends that have worked in the entertainment retail industry and they all say this same thing. Some stores will get their shipments from distro centers really early and some will get the shipment the weekend before it's due out. It just depends on the store, but I had a friend that worked in a video store and he would always tell me that they got in *insert title here* and it wouldn't be due out for almost two weeks.

I'm gonna speak out of my arse here and say that you're wrong.. sort of..

Sure, I would expect that the distribution centers would start receiving the game sometime soon after it goes gold. That should probably go with out saying, but as long as it's not in an actual store it doesn't really make any difference to any of us. It's not like I can go into a distribution center and pick up a game early that was accidentaly put on the shelf before the release date.

I've gone to buy games on the release date at gamestops, best buys, wal marts, mom 'n pop stores that have all told me to check back later in the day or the next day because the shipment hasn't come in yet. I'm pretty sure none of these employees have any reason to lie to me about this. I've also had a few experiences where I was told that they do have the game but can't sell it til the release date.

All that really matters is when the store actually receives the game. Because once the store gets the game in, there's the chance that an ignorant employee may put the game on the shelf early allowing us to reap the benifits.

I haven't been in my EB or GS recently to look but what the OP may have overheard
was the date the store recieves the game. If anyone gets in thier EB or GS take a look at the release binder by register. It will have a date listed and another date in parentheses
Like (SD MMDDYY) indicating street date. These can very often be a week apart.

I suspect the employee was explaining when the game was arriving and perhaps not the date it could be sold.

You're really having that much trouble believing the game is in the stores a week or two in advance. I guarantee you come Friday every store will have the Show in the back.

I'm sure this is mostly true, but I know for a fact that some stores don't get them delivered (from the distribution center, sony or wherever...I dunno) until release day.

Last year, in fact, I was in a Gamestop to pick up MLB 08 on release day. They had a bunch of boxes of 2K8 and the guy tried to sell me one...lol.

Anyway, when I explained it was "08, not 2K8" he said...oh, we haven't got our shipment in...should be any minute. I lingered, fiddled with the Guitar Hero setup for a minute and sure enough, there's Joe UPS with a box fulla Show...lol.

I'm not saying this is the norm everywhere, but it does happen this way (it's happened for me with other games too). Maybe it's limited to certain cities/regions (this was VA Beach), I don't know.

Yeah I agree with this. The last 3 years in 2 different gamestop locations I went to purchase the show and had to wait for the UPS guy. In fact last year at one of the locations there is also a Toys r us, I seen the UPS truck parked in front of that store while I was in gamestop. So I left gamestop went to Toys r Us and got my copy there. All you Show fanatics can understand my wanting the game 30 mins. earlier thenif I had waited at gamestop! Had to get an early fix.

If ya would have read what I posted and not jump to conclusions, you'd see what I just said. The registers are coded to not ring up street dated titles and no way an employee can override without a CSM. Of course ya wanna sell merchandise...do plenty of that being the #1 retailer in the world. Like I said, the employees know the rules and such and I've caught some in the past trying to sneak street dated titles and promptly fired them afterwards. Working assest protection, you see these things all the time. Electronics always is gonna have huge shrink no matter what.

I ran a video store for nine years. Most Video games are not street dated. They would just ship and arrive on the stores and you would start selling them that day. No holding them in the back for two weeks. Certain games (like MLB 09) arrive a few days early for release on a certain street date. This is the way it has been for years.

Hell, you can look back as early as this week. Street Fighter IV shipped basically on Monday night for a Tuesday release. Ask anyone who was constantly calling their store waiting for the shipment to come in.

Movies and Music both ship early and release on Tuesdays.

No, I don't have any trouble believing that most stores will have the show come Friday. That's why I started this thread...

The guy I was quoting was trying to make the case that "EVERYTHING" arrives a week or two early. And while that might be true for the distribution centers, it definitely is not the case for many stores. Like I said before, I've gone into plenty of stores on the release/street date only to be turned away because the still had not received the game. There's nothing to believe or not believe about that.. If I can't buy the game on the street date it's because the store doesn't have it.
