Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions

Just started a season and during batter walk ups you can see last years stats, ect. However, after a batter hits once and comes up to the plate again, during his walk up you do not see his stats, only 1 for 2 or 3 for 3 etc.

Is there an option that I am missing? I thought that 08 showed current batter stats at each batter walk up during the season?

Edit: I see the current stats in the 1st at bat in each additional game and then thats it until the next game.

After playing four games all I can really say is...

      wow.

The game is just beautiful and the flow of the game is just great.

Could surely be a system seller IMO. (was for me before I played it).

Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions

Okay. Managed to get two games in befrore work.

        Wow.

        I mean, wow.

I play on Veteran with very slight slider adjustments to beef up my hitting, which is atrocious. +1 to contact, solid hits and timing. I also bump the CPU pitch control -3 and the strike percentage down all the way (still working on my discipline and it helps me get ahead more often)

First game was Felix Hernandez versus Gil Meche and it was a dandy of a pitchers duel. The best thing about this game was that my lead-off AB as a hitter was a full count walk and the first batter I faced as a pitcher was a walk on a 3-1 pitch.

Anyway, in the first Ichiro walks and steals second and gets driven in on a one out gap double just past the outstretched reach of DeJesus in right center. You know, the kind of hit that simply didn't exist in previous versions. In fact, I pretty much assumed it was going to be caught and almost didn't score from second because I was tagging up!

So in the second Felix gets into a 2 out jam with runners at the corners and I get a ground ball to short. I come in sharply and try to get the out at 2nd, but the runner at first was off with the pitch and I didn't get him letting the run score. Bad play by me. I should have just gone to first.

After that the pitchers just settled in and racked up the outs. I ended up getting 8 2/3 out of Felix Hernandez. 5 hits 12K and 2 walks.

        Great game. 2-1 M's

In the second game against Cleveland I had to rally off their bullpen after Jeremey Sowers had me beating balls into the dirt with his sinker constantly through the first 6 innings. You really can feel the difference between different types of pitchers in this game. Not just between good and bad pitchers, but between groundballers, flyballers, guys who change speeds etc... It's really well done.

Anyway. I went into the bottom of the eight trailing 3-1. I drew a leadoff walk with Jose Lopez followed by a one out dunker by Ichiro. Frankie Gutierrez drilled an absolute laser beam double down the left field line scoring Lopez. Man, it felt good to see that hit. After a pathetic 3 pitch K by my defensive replacement catcher I nailed a two out 3 run HR to dead center field by Jeff Clement. Exhilarating to say the least.

I struggled a bit with Heilman's sidearm motion in the ninth, but recovered to punch out Hafner looking with 2 on to end the game.

        Kudos SCEA. Brilliant product.

Can't wait to get home and play some more.

Hopefully it is not out, maybe I have an option "Off". I am sure that not many people are playing a season to notice.

They did a lot of dumb crap like that. Besides the one you mentioned, they also made baserunning horrible, and they also put a stupid bulging red circle around the ball in RTTS mode.

You pump realism then put a big flashing icon around the ball that can't be turned off. STUPID. It's like they can't leave the things that are fine alone, they have to go and try and tweak it and when they do they screw it up. It's frustrating.

To be honest, I doubt it. I'm just surprised that would be removed - possibly with the new scoreboards (that are actually readable from a far) they thought that this could replace that?

                    I don't know.

Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions

Got the game after work today and played a couple innings of 3 games to get a feel for it. I jumped right into a franchise (might as well start now, my real one is waiting on Knights rosters) with the Rays.

I open the season at Fenway with Kaz against Smoltz. Let me preface this and say im pretty good on the mound, but im below average at the plate. I get no hit for 3 innings but in the 4th i get Upton on and double him home with Longo. Pena hits a two run jack in the 6th and im up 3-0 going into the bottom of the 6th. I get greedy with Kaz and told my wife (literally) i should pull Kaz now and go to the pen.

Next batter, Lowell, 2 run homer to center. 3-2. F me.

Get to the bottom of the 9th 302 and of course, i give up a leadoff triple. They sacrifice him home and we go to extras.

TO make a long story short, i lose in 14 (on legend mode). But this game is awesome. I was nervous, i really felt like i had a chance to win if i knew how to bat.

Great job SCEA. Back tomorrow AM with more

the game is great, the graphics are much imporved from last year. I love how you can really work the count, take pitches, and actually get walks.
