Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions

First impressions are both good and bad. The good is really good but the bad is really bad. Remember these are early impressions subject to change with more play, and since I've barely tapped the game I only have a few so far...

    Good:

    - Graphics! Holy crap man! lol, Killzone shmillzone, these are the best I've ever seen. Something to point out though, at first I was using 720p and they are truly amazing. When I switched to 1080p I seemed to lose A LOT of the incredible lighting effects. Though this may very well just be b/c the time of day or clouds or something. I will have to play more games to see.

    - I'm adjusting to the bat speed finally. Yay!

    - Sound... almost as amazing as the graphics. That is saying A LOT!

    - Game is really fun so far, though subject to the bad (see sliders below).

    - Did I mention the graphics? It needs repeating. Your jaw is gonna drop off your face.

    Bad:

    - Sliders. Ok, this one flat out pisses me OFF! Where did all my sliders go? I'm not kidding, they took out a bunch and on top of that, even worse, they combined a bunch of them! For instance, the ability to set infield, outfield and runner speed separately for the users and the cpu. This is now one setting. WHAT THE HECK?! Having this ability in 08 really allowed me to dial everything in perfectly and overcome the cheats the CPU would use like running faster than you.

    - Where are my reaction sliders? Or the one for the ability for the cpu to lay off close pitches? Where are all kinds of my sliders gone to? There were a ton of sliders in 08, all brilliantly done. I had 08 fine tuned like a purring kitten. I cannot believe this baloney... I'm literally astounded! I can't believe this hasn't been brought up or mentioned already; I am in shock over here. To take all of these out makes no sense whatsoever... it's like 09's sliders should be 08's and vice versa... never have I seen a series take so many sliders out. I'm appalled and as you can see, pretty upset by this. They are basically saying screw you, you WILL play this game how *WE* want you to, you will not be allowed to overcome our cheats anymore, ahahahaha.

Just noticed the text describing the slider for pickoffs. It now reads: "Lowering this can allow the user to exploit the cpu unfairly". What in the heck!! They think THEY are the cpu or something and are being cheated by US? lol. In reality, the cpu goes crazy throwing over when you take a single step. This text only makes me even more suspicious about my earlier comment. I'm honestly starting to think they took these sliders out on purpose to keep the cpu advantages. Ugh.

I can't help it, I'm such a tweaker... I love tweaking games to perfection and 08 really allowed for that. I had such an honest and well playing baseball game. This won't mean jack for most people but for people (OCD sports nuts) like me, this is beyond frustrating!

    - Ok, this one is pretty amazing... so much so, I recorded it and I'm going to upload it later... it has to be seen to be believed. CPU at bat, runner on 3rd I think 1 out. Hits a grounder to 3rd, and the runner tries to score... that's the setup, now let me go back. As the batter hits the ball, he steps back and my catcher forward, they literally walk right through each other like neither was there. Oh well, I can live with that, but remember that advancing runner? Yeah.. my catcher receives the ball from the 3rd baseman in plenty of time, so much so, I take a step towards the runner cause he's gonna flatten me, so I do this to meet him head on... what happens? lol, again, they both pass right through each other like neither was there... and I mean, full on bodies head on like both are ghosts right straight through one another. I can live with some clipping, but this is on a homeplate play!! WHAT ... THA ... CRAP?

I want to see that collision! Maybe my guys drops it; it was going to be a truly epic hit!

See my post here for pics and a video...

Does your tv do 720p native though? If not you may be out of luck. Though I'm not really well informed on all that stuff. Someone else may help you.

But to get 1080p you go into your dashboard and display settings and uncheck 720p and 1080i and just leave 1080p (480 is always checked and greyed out so that's ok).

Yes. I have an old TV and it does everything but 1080p.

Ok, you're fine then... it is in 720p. It will always play in 720p if you have that option also selected in your dash, under "display settings". use custom and look at the ones you have checked, just make sure 720p is and the game will default to that, not matter what else you have selected.

so, in order to get it into another resolution, you actually have to deselect 720p.

I just had an amazing game: Cubs-Bosox.

It was bottom of the 9th 1-0 Boston. My first guy up to plate was Soriano up against Papelbon.

He sends a 1-0 fastball right down the wheelhouse and WHAM!! Soriano sends it to 400 feet left center!

I swear when I tell you guys this that it was dead silent before that pitch and as soon as Soriano smashed, the sold out crowd sounded as if SCEA recorded those 4 to 5 drunk guys who always scream at everything during a ballgame just all went YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! in unison!!!

All I heard was just one long yell while the ball was flying out of the park. I don't know if my mind was making my hearing respond to make it sound so realistic, but boy I have never heard a yell like that in a sports game. Simply awesome!! i dont even think i heard it in the show 08.

God bless you SCEA for making such a badass game!!!

Anyone have any tips for hitting homers. I've always had issues going yard in this game.

I had issues until I started working the count more. I usually take until I get a strike and try to get myself in as many hitters counts as possible (2-0, 3-1) because those are generally fastball situations. I'm sure you guys already know that, but The Show replicates this very well and you should have success hitting home runs if you can be patient.

one nice little touch i noticed was that in a blowout game, the crowds leave early, haha

i was losing 9-3, and by the 7th or 8th inning the stadium was a silent ghost town

Say it with me people... Release a patch or get working on one pronto. Anyone who thinks i'm wrong on this let me just say that I thought MLB 08 was the best game ever. I'm a huge baseball fan and like as much realism as possible in my video games. In 08' the show with Nems' sliders i had a .270 avg, during a full season, 5+ era, realistic HRs and Ks. Can anyone honestly say they are ready to start a season right now on 09' and get these type of results? Oh yeah.. I don't use guess pitch, strike zone, or the ball marker while pitching.

The game looks great and does indeed have great additions but c'mon now, my biggest complaint is everyone pitches like CC. These pitchers paint the corners like crazy. Last game i counted 62 times they either painted an extreme corner or went extramly low center. 62 pitches like that and then factor in maybe 35-40 balls, hmmm WOW whats left 3-5 good hitable pitches. This game almost feels like HR derby. I can never manufacture any runs! Another complaint is errors. Very obvious errors are called hits almost every game with one of my games having 3 of them. This game needs help. 2 days in and i lower my 10 score to a 7. With a patch maybe a 10. FIX THE PITCHING SONY! I believe that is why so many people are have problems hitting. Oh yeah, lastly this game is NOTHING like the demo, which is a good thing but what were they trying to do... Trick us?

I noticed that batter and pitcher analysis is not available after a game. It was available after the demo game. I wonder why this was removed. I wanted to look back at what pitchers did during the game. Am I overlooking this?

And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

OK this is just my opinion, but wow! This game is truly amazing. I had the best game ever in all of my years of baseball gaming. Cain vs King H. Both pitchers were dealing. They beat me 1 to 0, but it felt so real. Every at bat was intense. Just amazing detail. I love this game. I think I might just play exhibition games this year. I really love all the color jerseys and I must say that DC jersey is bad ***!
