Re: MLB 09 "Road To The Show" thread

Well, I got traded......to the Marlins. ugh. Was totally bummed. Didn't want to get traded in the first place but even worse that I go to the Marlins who I just have no interest in playing for. I suppose I could request a trade but I try to play as realistic as possible and really a 19yo AAA player probably wouldn't even dream of requesting a trade in real life. I'm their starting SS in AAA (even though my 1st position is 3B).

Here's a question...since my contract is up at the end of the season is there any hope that another team will offer me a deal? Or, because I only have 2 years of service am I still only going to get an offer from the Marlins, being their property & all?

In previous releases of the game I've gotten two or three contract offers after my first one runs out, so hopefully you have a chance to get out of Florida.

Re: MLB 09 "Road To The Show" thread

Since the first RTTS crashed and burned I've finally made it back to the majors with my 2nd player.

The first year at AA, the 2nd at AAA. At the end of the 2nd year I was offered a 1 year contract for MLB bench at $450,000 approx. I countered with 3 years at $950,000 -- basically wanting job security and a chance to prove myself. They [Pittsburgh] accepted thankfully.

I realize I may be sent to AAA in there but I'm excited to finally get to work through spring training and improve some skills.

Unfortunately, I don't see any chance for playoffs as the Bucs have finished last in the Central both years thus far. Oh well, can't be greedy. Just have to be happy to be on the MLB squad.

Has anyone experienced salary arbitration or been taken in the rule 5 draft, etc.? This is supposedly a part of RTTS as well.

Bad news. You belong to the Marlins. You need 6 years of MLB service to earn your Free Agency status. You earn arbitration after 3 years. Your other hope is the Rule 5 draft.

There are rules to that if you are drafted to.

Organizations may also draft players from AA or lower to play for their AAA affiliates (for $12,000) and may draft players from A teams or lower to play for their AA affiliates (for $4,000).
So your best hope may be to be a rule 5 draftee and that will also almost guarantee you a spot on the 25 man roster.

Not this year. With all the new roster rules they implemented you are gonna need 6 years for FA and 3 for arbitration. It's gonna take some time to get away from your drafted teams this year if you don't like the team. I personally like it. I'm stuck with the Nationals right now. 6 years can't get here fast enough!

Ya, I like that I don't have much if any control, it's a major plus to the mode. But, really....the Marlins? Oh well.

I signed at 18 too, so I guess it's gonna be a couple more years before I can even qualify for rule 5.

Re: MLB 09 "Road To The Show" thread

Here is the info on FA, and abatration for everyone to see.

If a player is drafted and is offered a contract by his drafting team (or any team he is traded to) each year, he may not become a free agent until he has been on a major league roster or disabled list for at least six years. Otherwise, any player without a contract may become a free agent and sign with any team.

A player is eligible for salary arbitration if he:

                1. is ineligible for free agency
                2. is without a contract
                3. cannot agree with his current team on a new contract
                4. has been on a major league roster or disabled list for at least three years

"Super Two" exception - A player with at least two years of experience may be eligible for salary arbitration if he:

                1. Meets the first three requirements from above
                2. Played in the majors for at least 86 days in the previous season
                3. Is among the top 17 percent for cumulative playing time in the majors among others with at least 2 years, but less than 3 years experience

In this process, the player and the team both submit a salary offer for a new contract; the arbitrator chooses one number or the other, whichever is thought to be most "fair" given comparable wages among players with similar ability and service time. Players thus rely on arbitration and free agency to increase their salaries.

Players eligible for neither free agency nor salary arbitration are very seldom offered contracts for much more than the league minimum salary, as the player has no recourse to try to obtain a better salary elsewhere. For this reason, in the first three major league years of their careers, players accept comparatively low salaries even when their performance is stellar. This is an accepted practice; talented, young players are usually content to "pay their dues" in this way and earn a chance to negotiate for more in their fourth year. Occasionally, a team may wish to sign a player in his second or third year to a long-term contract, for which negotiation can take place for a much higher salary.

So if I understand that correctly, there is a chance I suppose that the Marlins would not offer me a contract, in which case another club could.

But I'm not clear on this....if the Marlins do offer me a contract but I don't accept....then what? I wouldn't be eligible for arbitration. Would I just sit out? Would the game force me to retire?

I don't know if this is normal or not, but I started off being drafted by the Reds and was traded to the Orioles around the ASB in 09. I made it to the bigs as a September call-up, then in the off-season they offered me a 4 year deal which sucks because I wanted a 1 year deal so I didn't sign it. I simmed into early February and they put me on waivers and I got claimed by the Diamondbacks who I agreed to a deal with.

Re: MLB 09 "Road To The Show" thread

Basically, while you are in the minors the best you can do is to get more money. You will have to sign with the team that controls your rights. Once you get to the Majors your best bet to get more money would be a "Super Two" exemption. Basically all of us who are in the first 3-5 years of their careers are stuck with the teams they are on. Once you get that MLB service clock running it is a different story.

For me personally. I'm in year three (2011 season) with the Nationals. It's my first in the bigs. I will be eligable for abritration in year 6 (end of 2013 season) and FA in year 9 (end of 2016 season). That will put me at 29 when I hit the open market. That means one big contract for 5 or 6 years. Hopefully with a contender. I started my guy at age 20.

Despite all that, I hope to make a lot of money in arbitration. Right now I'm the Nats number 2 pitcher in the perfect world I'd become the staff ace and get that good number 1 pitcher money.

So by signing my recent 3 year deal with the MLB Pirates I have locked myself in for salary arbitration if/when the contract runs out?

If so, that is just sweetness. I wanted something more long-term than 1 year, but I just slapped 3 years out there randomly. If for no other reason, I'm looking forward to it just to see what the arbitration process is like.

From reading that yes. You will be able to try salary arbitration when that deal expires. Let us know how it goes.

Cool, so this might be a good option. Still not FA, but not w/ the Marlins either.

here is a quick recap of my guy:

CF that was given a ST invite with the Brewers. I didnt make the 40 man team and was made their starting CF in AA

mid season 09 i was traded to the white sox. i finished the year as starting CF in AA then was promoted to AAA in the offseason.

i have been their starting CF since, ranked 18th best CF in AAA. Im batting .330-.340 but im not ready power wise, speed (64), or defensively (high 40s).

ideally i would like to end up a Pirate but the CWS are fine by me. my contract ends this season (year 2) so it will be interesting to see what they offer.

question - is there any benefit to being paid more?

Haha, I'd be more than HAPPY to trade spots with you. I just signed my deal with the Pirates for a bench role at the MLB level. I'm hoping over the next 3 years to give the chance for the team to get out of the cellar. Otherwise, I'm hoping my performance does well enough to earn another 3 years so I can reach the magical 6 year mark and ultimately free agency.

I also wondered the benefit of pay in this game. I suppose it would impact your team's ability to sign big name players. But does it have an impact on performance or is it just bells and whistles?
