How is the mode where you make your player and take him through the minors, is it worth it? And most importantly, how is the gameplay?

    Thanks so much guys.
Never played 2k baseball (love their basketball and hockey titles, tho) and I'm also a big Madden and NCAA football guy...

    Simply put:

The Show is the most polished and complete PS2 (and apprently, PS3) sports title out there...

Franchise is well done, "Road to the Show" if addictive and the presentation, and gameplay is unmatched...

You have MANY options of how you want to play (I like classic pitching and only choose to pitch, call my pitches (A.P.I. off) and bat, and use assisted baseruning, while having the A.I., field and throw for me)...

Even with those assists, I feel like my input controls the outcome of the games...

It has a reasonable learning curve (not too easy or too hard), very responsive sliders, weekly roster updates and no two games played against the CPU feel the same...feels less "scripted" than other sports titles...

If you're on PS2, and love baseball (or just sports gaming in general) this is a steal at $29.99, IMHO and the opinions of MANY on this forum...

I just hope the drop in graphics will be made up for by the gameplay, still used to next gen. I just want a good baseball game so bad.

        Re: PS2 Impressions thread

Okay, so tonight I saw some things that PO'd me that I'm hoping are just flukes.

1st was when I was in the field with runners on 1st and 2nd. The batter hits a fly ball to center field and I get under it, the runner on 2nd is trying to tag. I get the ball to 3rd before the runner gets there, but my 3rd baseman puts the tag down away from the runner as in completely opposite side of the bag(the side closest to home plate). I ended up getting out of that inning, so no huge deal...

2nd is something that really worries me. On line drives to the outfield my outfielder will just run right past the ball and not even attempt to put a glove on it. They're usually even watching the ball roll right under them. I've experienced this twice, in 4 or 5 games(I've been playing mostly RTTS since I got it).

So I was wondering if anyone has seen these, or if they are just rare occasions...

It's worth it buddy. I just picked up the PS2 version a couple days ago after getting burned out by 2K9 on the 360 and the superior gameplay in The Show is well worth the drop in graphics. This is the most fun I've had in a long time......possibly the most fun I've had in a baseball game ever, and I've been playing baseball games since the original Nintendo days.

That's awesome dude, you seemed to be pretty hopeful with MLB 2k9, but if you really say that The Show is worth it, then I think I'm going to go pick it up tomorrow!

I borrowed my friends copy of 2K9 and played with some sliders, but the glitches actually ruined the outcome of each game. Lame.

I'm hopeful that the downgrade and graphics won't be too much of a hit. I just want to play a great franchise. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on this game.

Are there a good amount of alternates and throwbacks?

Yes, I was very hopeful for MLB 2K9 and was looking forward to it for a long time, but was unfortunately disappointed. I haven't given up on it completely as I'll wait and see what the patch will do, but I haven't played it in over a week because of the issues/bugs so I needed something solid to satisfy my baseball fix. The Show is definitely putting a smile on my face

Once you get used to the graphics, they aren't terrible. The animations are smooth, which is very important. The only thing that bothers me are the jagged lines and the player models aren't the best (arms look too short and some heads look strange), but the solid gameplay really makes up for it.

So yeah, I would much rather play a game with this kind of gameplay even if the graphics aren't spectacular. Gameplay is much more important to me.

So far I've only played with the Cubs since they are my team, but they have their alternate blue and their BP jerseys in addition to their home and away jerseys.

Is it possible to save an unfinished game in the PS2 version? I thought I read somewhere that it was, but maybe that is only in the PS3 version? I'm talking about a season game, BTW.

The more I play, the less thrilled I am with defense in general. I see at least 2 to 3 things every game that make me want to scratch my head. Far too many times balls are going pass fielders because the game defaults control to the wrong fielder or just because the fielder wont pick the ball up period. Defense needs some serious polish.

Unfortunately no, you can't. I was really hoping this would be an option this year.

What PS2 games did have in-game saves? I remember Madden 04 having it but that's it.

I'm pretty sure the latest Madden has it. And I seem to remember the MVP games had it? I thought you could save in between innings or something.

either way, yeah, it's a feature I've always wanted in The Show and could never figure out why it's absent, because it seems like it would be simple to implement. It would be great to be able to play a few innings of a franchise game before work, or while your waiting for a ride, or whatever, and then save it to finish later.

The later years of ASB had in game saving.

Anyone know if custom rosters can be used online in unranked games?(like you could on MVP 2005)

Yea, this defense thing is starting to piss me off more and more each game.

It's not just balls down towards the 1B or 3B either, it happens on liners up the middle too. Every infielder has had a chance to dive and be WELL within distance to make a stab, but I hit the dive button and there's my outfielder diving to the floor to give up an extra base. What gives, SCEA? It's almost starting to make me not want to play, and there's no way to fix it.

The defense this year is definitely a downgrade this year. It's very annoying, last year I remember it selecting the correct fielder all the time but it seems not to this year and it's definitely a turn off. I remember seeing the ball going by an outfielder once without trying to field it in last years game but it seems like a bigger problem this year from what I;ve seen so far. I'm still going to continue playing it until I get a lot more games under my belt, but if the defense becomes to problamatic I may stop...
