Re: MLB 12 The Show Team Rankings (Overall, Hitting, Pitching and Defense)

Using fWAR, active roster only, and the last three years. The best teams in each category are as follows with their Show ranking in parenthesis:

    Batting:
    1. Yankees (4)
    2. Red Sox (2)
    3. Rays (18)(WTF?)
    4. Brewers (12)
    5. Cardinals (8)

    Pitching:
    1. White Sox (18) (Again, WTF?)
    2. Giants (2)
    3. Rangers (14)
    4. Yankees (1)
    5. Rockies (28) (!)

    Defense:
    1. Rays (9)
    2. Reds (8)
    3. Diamondbacks (7)
    4. Giants (23)
    5. Mariners (18)

I'm sure the rest of the game is great, but this truly disappoints me.

Brewers seem pretty well rounded, but I think they should be ranked higher in hitting. Sure, they lost Fielder, but they got Aramis and got rid of McGehee, then replaced the useless Betancourt with Alex Gonzalez.

Yea, I'm not one to get involved in rankings threads, but this is pretty bad unfortunately. I understand a couple weird ones here and there, but c'mon.

In the AL last year, the Angels had the best staff or was top 3 in every category, and they just added CJ Wilson! And with their bullpen getting heat early on, they did end up having something like the 2nd lowest ERA once the season was over. That's truly disappointing that SCEA has them 10th, since along with the Rays they will be pretty dominant and well ahead of the pack.

Other than the Phillies and Rays, no team an throw 4 starters as good as the Angels, and Jerome Williams was pretty nasty last season after Joel Pineiro was weighing them down statistically.

          and the rays are 8th

although i have a feeling the age on their rotation means SCEA will rate them lower but give them high potential.

Moore may be an obvious stud, but SCEA cant rate him too highly considering his experience.

My question is are these rankings based on just active 25 man rosters or count the entire organization? If its the total club then some of these ratings may be lost on us. We don't really know what every player may rank in the minors to change the rankings from what the big league club would give us.

But once you get those hits, and have batting averages and guys on base...you need to have the clutch hitting (base hits or home runs to get them across home plate for RBIs. Maybe they factor in that a lot with making their rankings. Ultimately, scoring more runs than the other team or more points than the other team is what any sport boils down to on its most fundamental level. And stopping runs or goals or points of course. I would be curious to see what the rankings would look like solely taking into account runs scored vs. runs against. Not that that would be accurate.

That being said, in reality, the rankings in the game do not matter that much. Teams perform below or above expectations every year, and everyone has their own opinion on team or player rankings. Some people are biased in their opinions while others are not. Some teams win with predominantly defense and others win predominantly with offense even though so many sports writers/analysts say "defense wins championships." Some teams go on a streak at the right time (2011 Cardinals) or wrong time (2011 Red Sox). The unpredictability of individual sports contests/games or seasons is the true beauty of sports, and it is the part of the reason why people love to watch sports so much.
              NHL: Rangers
              MLB: Yankees
              NFL: Giants
              NCAAF: Illinois Fighting Illini, Lafayette
              NCCAB: Illinois Fighting Illini, Lafayette

Yea I see your point, another fact is that the Mets were 12th in the majors in runs scored (718 runs), they scored 5 more runs than the Phillies (713 runs) yet the phillies won over 100 games because their pitching was unbelievable with a 3.02 ERA which was the best in baseball. Stats like these interest me a lot. But you're right about how this won't effect the game much.

Tigers look good. 4th, 4th, 6th, and 16th. Not bad
