Cosart to Miami for Marisnick and Moran. Thoughts?

Agree with Matthew Pouliot of Rotoworld on Twitter when the news broke: "Both Marisnick, Moran have a chance to be long-term regulars, but don't see star potential in either."

Terrible. Just terrible. Cosart was young and good.

I love that trade to be honest. I don't think Cosart really had much more than middle of the rotation upside to be completely honest. The Astros got a pair of really toolsy players back. Marisnick's star has faded somewhat due to his struggles but I think he's got plenty of good tools. That being said, I don't seem him as a star but I could definitely see him starting in Center on a playoff contending team at his peak. Moran is my favorite player in the deal though because he was the best pure hitter in last year's draft. There are plenty of hitters out there but pure hitters only come around every so often. I think Moran has a better chance than Marisnick to be special but I wouldn't hold my breath. I would love to have Moran on my team regardless though... His bat is just too special IMO.

I've heard that sound 3 times... once was Babe Ruth, the second was Josh Gibson, and the third was Bo Jackson- Buck O'Neil

          Well, factually, he was young.

4.28 xFIP. 4.41 ERA. 1.47 K-BB. There's really nothing that suggests he's in any way good.

In past years however, he was better than any Astros pitcher. I do however like that they got Moran in the deal

That's because you're comparing him to Astros pitchers. He's just bad. You guys got Moran AND Marisnick AND a draft pick.

Yeah I see, but he's still a young at least decent pitcher. Why not trade Keuchel?

You can still trade Keuchel when teams are desperate near the end of August or even in the offseason. Same with McHugh. The best part is that they're legitimately good so you don't have to deal them.

I just think Cosart had a higher upside than those guys. Don't let Dallas Keuchel fool you. He's having a good year, but I expect him to drop off after this year, same with McHugh.

Keuchel hasn't done much until this year. Look at him on FanGraphs. McHugh just seems like he will just stop being good at some point.

Nothing about what they've done this year seems unsustainable. There is every reason to state that Keuchel has been every bit as good as his ERA suggests and McHugh has been even better.

Cosart's upside as a starter was a 3. Pretty much all the scouts and major publications agreed that he would probably play better at closer because he doesn't a have a real 3rd weapon and lacks the control that would make him an elite starter. Last season Cosart walked more than he struck out and his FIP was 3 points higher than his ERA.

That being said, Cosart did have a higher ceiling than Keuchel and McHugh before the season... And then Keuchel's control and pitchability got better. On top of that Keuchel just threw a 4 hit complete game against the Oakland A's, the best team in all of baseball right now. McHugh on the other hand suddenly flashed an elite level curveball to go with good control and a few other above average pitches.

Essentially McHugh and Keuchel are better locks to remain in the rotation and be very productive, moreso than Cosart who is destined for a role in the bullpen.

I understand what you guys are saying, but he is 23, he's still got time to improve. I look back at the trade now and like what we got back, I just had a good feeling about Cosart.
