Re: PS3 to PS4 Transition: What to Expect?

It is exciting, but I think people need to be reasonable. Look at some PC games and see what similar hardware is capable of. It looks to be as powerful as a current mid-range PC is. Although it should be cheaper to the consumer if Sony and Microsoft eat some of the cost as they did with the previous consoles. Plus devs should be able to extract more out of them since each box is the same, but it will take time most likely. Look at the difference between 360 games, like Halo 3 to Halo 4. Digital foundry did a pretty good look at what the new PS4 might have hardware wise and compared it to current hardware. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/df...xt-gen-console

Maybe I am a bit on the "it will be better, but not amazing." side since I have a pretty hefty PC already. I play most multiplatform games on PC and see the difference in performance, AA, and resolution already, but for a game like The Show it is very exciting since it is a console exclusive. I am very excited too. But I also am afraid people will expect so much that they'll assume that things could be better than what MLB 14-XX is when it is shown/released. I would much much much rather see devs (all devs/publishers) put the new hardware to work ensuring that they release games that perform consistently without drops in framerate. Whether that is locked at 30 fps or 60 fps (Oh god I hope 60 becomes the standard on consoles though).

You have to also take into account that these consoles have no Windows API or whatever hogging them down. Depending on your config in a couple years these systems will be much more capable than a midrange PC (GTX550) or something of that nature. Already a 560ti is becoming a standard needed for most high end games.

That being said they should be able to reuse a lot of their work and just make higher resolutions and more AA possible and people would be happy. Of course they are going to do a lot more than that I hope. Cityscapes and what not would need a big upgrade in a couple years. Textures themselves should be 2x what they are now at least in some areas and that will take time.

Even so, 13 at 1080p native with 4xMSAA, 16x Anisotropic, 60fps solid, and maybe some transparency AA would make the game look incredible if they beefed up animations and crowds a little. All they really have to do is make some adjustments for year 1 on the PS4 imo. Year 2 should be where they really get their feet wet.

The jump to PS2 to PS3 was amazing. Granted, MLB 13 looks way better than MLB 07, but MLB 07 looked wayyyy better than MLB 06.

Yeah? I joined The Show from 08 but from the looks of it it seems 08 was the real big next gen step, especially with the lighting.

Oh it was a huge step, don't get me wrong. But look at the stadiums in PS2 and then PS3. Look at the crowds in ps2 and then PS3. Look at the uniforms in ps2 and then ps3.

07 was actually criticized quite a bit for its visuals and bugs. Looking at gameplay online didn't impress me enough to buy a PS3. Its why I stuck with the PS2 version and didn't get a PS3 until 08 came out, which was received much better and visually looked a lot better than 07.

Its expected that with better hardware comes better visuals. It why I think people were a bit dissapointed with the visuals of MLB 07 on ps3. At least I remember them being criticized and was a major deterrent for me getting a PS3 and the game. Its like saying a Super Mario World looks better than Super Mario Brothers 3. Of course it does, it was made later and with better hardware.

Isn't it kinda early to really be expecting anything. We don't even know what the ps4 hardware specs are.

Apparently dev kits are out and the specs have been conveyed to a few news outlets. The reports seem to be pretty solid and detailed as far as rumors go, which is why people have been talking about this so much I think.

I think that for the first iteration or two The Show probably won't be all that different from the current PS3 version. The PS4 won't have the install base that the PS3 has so I'd expect most of the improvements to be window dressing, things that could be implemented now if they could spare the memory: higher res textures, more stats, players wearing their team jersey at the All-Star game, working retractable roofs, etc. It's probably best to expect stuff like that and get blown away by some unexpected new feature than to be disappointed when its largely the same. Luckily for me, those kind of added frills would be enough to make me buy a PS4 day one.

I think their first PS4 release will blow me away no matter what.

I'll be plenty blown away when this game gets 1080p native and all the bells and whistles the PS3 cannot afford. The gameplay is already nearing peak for what is there and all I need for the first year or two is a SMOOTH and detailed experience.

I fully expect the core gameplay to be as solid as we already have (and only improving), and much needed addition of more stats should become reality pretty early in the iterations.

Lately, I've been getting old copies of the Show (09 and 08 so far), and I'm actually amazed how much the graphics has improved from those years. Comparing MLB 12 to 08 is almost like a console generation gap. If that happens on the same console (PS3), you kinda expect similar improvement over the years for PS4.

I just really got involved with The Show a couple of months back and I picked up 8 through 12 and will definitely be getting 13 on launch day. Not much difference graphically between 8 and 9. 10 improved a bit and would look a lot better if there was an option to change the batting and pitching cameras. Looked a bit better on the field.

11 is a large jump graphically and damn near the equal of 12. I am hoping 13 looks better than 11 and 12 but I think they have pushed the current console just about as far as they can. Looking forward to seeing what they can do with the PS4 after a couple of years under their belt.
