Its actually lower than the regular strike rate- 58% to 63%. Really just about any reason other than a bug has been discussed in this thread at some point (For those that are having the problem). Now its just a matter of whether the devs agree and can/will fix it.

Re: first pitch meatballs....bug?
I have not played enough games to know if there is a bug myself, but I do see the trends. And I have noticed a difference when I call time. Could be coincidence, but I would have a tendency to believe the observations of a lot of the guys I remember here.Comment

No kidding. I wouldn't have guessed that. Makes sense I guess though. Waste one early to see if the hitter will bite.Comment

Re: first pitch meatballs....bug?
After many games it seems the CPU throws their X button pitch aimed at the middle of the plate 95% of the time for the 1st batter of each inning and 1st pitch of pitching change. It seems of those 95%, the number of pitches 'grooved' depends on the accuracy of the pitcher and slider settings. What ticks me off is I haven't been able to capitalize. I seem to line out every 1st out of the inning. It's like the CPU knows I'm trying exploit it. Seriously, I think it is something that should be patched. It's gives too much advantage the the hitter in a late game pitching change situation.Comment

Re: first pitch meatballs....bug?
Well, my stats confirm the fact that I suck at hitting, so I prolly shouldn't be passing on that first pitch strike. Once I noticed the problem I kinda stopped swinging at the first pitch in most situations wanted to keep the game fair and all. Think I'll go back to hacking at that forst strike. maybe my team batting average will finally rise above .220Comment

Someone with the bug, try this:
Go to settings. Change them to "Expert". Save your settings. Then go back in and change whatever individual settings you want.
Just a hunch. When I first booted up the game, I set it to expert, tweaked individual game settings, then saved the file.

Re: first pitch meatballs....bug?
After testing, testing and more testing to the point I wasn't enjoying the game anymore as my focus was on that damn 1st pitch AB/inning, the Show God helped me and all of the sudden after a TO call at bat the problem/bug went away in all modes/difficulties. Again, 1 only TO "fixed" it. This ofc for now because I'm pretty sure that there's something that triggers this 1st pitch situation (maybe Beginner Mode kicks in randomly or something else happens idk). Hopefully SCEA will come with a fix, though I'm kind of sceptic because it seems really difficult to find what triggers this one. Well, the devs know better for sure.
I'm somewhat dissapointed now because nearly 2 weeks of videogame baseball went away for me by extensively testing this "bug". I know it's my fault, my decision.Oh well, still a full season is ahead.Comment

Re: first pitch meatballs....bug?
I have noticed in my franchise as the games have gone on this bug or whatever has become less frequent and i cant just look for that first pitch meatball to begin an inning...still happens the odd time but its almost as if the other teams have adjusted to me going after first pitches...i am about 25 games into it so beginning of May on HOF difficulty...
anyone else see this? maybe it was designed that way, i like it as now i can work the count betterComment

Just out of curiosity, I wonder what the first pitch strike % is for AA and AAA pitchers?
For the record though, calling a timeout seems to really help in RTTS. Especially with first pitch variety.

Re: first pitch meatballs....bug?
I've noticed that the CPU throws a lot of first pitch strikes.....but I'm rarely ever able to hit them. I usually take the first pitch and try and get into a deep count. When I go up there and hack at the first pitch it's usually a weak ground ball or a pop up into foul territory or the infield.
At least in my games so far, these pitches aren't meatballs right on a tee begging to be hit.....they are just strikes in the strike zone. I don't think it's really a glitch or a bug. When asked what the most important pitch is, Roger Clemens always answered "Strike one". So I believe the game is trying to replicate the desire of a real MLB pitcher to throw a first pitch strike and avoid falling behind.Comment
