I'm okay with the loss of Hanrahan, except the fact that I have his jersey. But I'm confident in Grilli. Hanrahan was shaky a lot last year and hasn't faired well in spring this year. However, I will agree with you to the extent of what we got in return. We should have at least gotten someone with some real big league exposure.

Re: 2013 OSFM: Pittsburgh Pirates
Mark Melancon was the big return for the Hanrahan trade. He had one bad year, but two years ago he was very good and he is likely to return to 2011 form. Melancon doesn't bring the same heat as Hanrahan but he is still very good, I think SCEA underrated him.
With the money the Pirates shed in Hanrahan's contract they were able to sign Russel Martin and Francisco Liriano so there is that as well. Odds are Melancon/Grilli will do just as well as Grilli/Hanrahan did but they added two good players at more important positions.
B potential is probably too high for Holt. We gave him a C last year which is still accurate. I liked Holt but he was looking like a .260 hitter at best with average defense at best even at 2nd. I think the Pirates wanted De Jesus since he has better defense but the Sox needed a 2B in return so the Pirates offered Holt to even the trade."I am more valuable to my team hitting .330 than swinging for home runs." - Roberto Clemente

Re: 2013 OSFM: Pittsburgh Pirates
Yah, I guess I wasn't looking at Melancon in that way. After all the years of salary dumping, I wasn't used to actually looking at a players stats rather than the names in return hah! I knew Melancon was good, I was just cautious about getting crazy about him until we saw if he's returning to form.
Martin is definitely an upgrade over Barajas. Liriano I feel can translate well in the NL. He ERA's were high the past couple of years but in a hitters league. His high strikeout ratios should fare well in the NL.
GoBucs, you do realize you only have a few more hours in "this weekend" to get those pictures posted haha just messinComment

Re: 2013 OSFM: Pittsburgh Pirates
So after today, I'd say McPherson is no longer a 5th starter candidate.Comment

Re: 2013 OSFM: Pittsburgh Pirates
Sanchez looked rotation hungry tonight! What do you guys think?Comment

Re: 2013 OSFM: Pittsburgh Pirates
yes let's just hope Melancon returns to form, and I think a "B" is high for Holt as well, I was just saying if you go by the game we got the short end of the deal.
I was pulling for McPherson to get the fifth spot, now I'm pulling for a Locke because McPherson is virtually out of the running imo, but I have a feeling it's going to be Sanchez unless NH doesn't want to spend the money...Comment

Re: 2013 OSFM: Pittsburgh Pirates
I'm thinking we start the year with Burnett, Rodriguez, JMac, Sanchez, Locke as the rotation guys.
Liriano joins as a 4/5 once healthy. Karstens is long man (a job he's had before) who can spot start if needed.
JMO, seems to be the way they're trending though.Comment

Re: 2013 OSFM: Pittsburgh Pirates
I think that's a solid rotation to start as long as McDonald keeps to form and Sanchez performs the way he has been. I believe he'll get one more start before they make a decision on him but I don't see how they can't go with him.
I also like Karstens in the bullpen as a long reliever/spot starter. I feel he is more prone to injury as a starter.
Also, with the way the schedule is, we technically don't need a 5th starter right away.Comment

Re: 2013 OSFM: Pittsburgh Pirates
It would be nice if Charlie Morton could get back into the swing of things. That elbow has been working for over a year and he was slinging some good stuff before he went down.Comment

Re: 2013 OSFM: Pittsburgh Pirates
Yah it really is a shame that Karstens and Morton are so injury prone. When both of them are on, they make for a great 3-4, 4-5 punch in the rotation. Of only they could stay healthy.Comment

Re: 2013 OSFM: Pittsburgh Pirates
Agreed on Charlie, but really, it might be moot at this point. He probably would've been fighting for the 5th spot even if healthy, and I think whoever the 5th starter is is likely to just be a placeholder until Cole makes his debut around mid-season (which I am unbelievably excited for).
Shame McPherson has struggled so terribly this spring, I was encouraged with him at the end of last year. Hope it's not another shoulder issue like last season.Comment

Re: 2013 OSFM: Pittsburgh Pirates
I was really pulling for McPherson as well. He's shown a lot of promise until he has that one inning. Almost Kevin Correia esq.
Well with Sanchez in the four, I can't imagine them going with Locke and having three lefties. I'd say it is down to McPherson and Gomez. If Karstens wouldn't be hurt all the time I'd say the rotation would've been set today.Comment

Re: 2013 OSFM: Pittsburgh Pirates
Yeah I'm interested to see which way they go. It wouldn't surprise me if they wind up going with 3 lefties, as PNC is extremely unfriendly to right-handed hitters.
We'll see, though. Apparently Sanchez has been told he made the team, so they have 2 RHP and 2 LHP heading into the home stretch of ST.Comment

eman - who do you think is going to take the 5th starter spot in the rotation? Thankfully we don't "technically" need a 5th starter right awayLast edited by KHarmo88; 03-26-2013, 06:34 PM.Comment
