      Re: 2013 OSFM: Pittsburgh Pirates

Some random scouting reports from BP.

Stetson Allie, 1B: Raw power; big body; big bank account. The pitcher turned first baseman should start the season in Low-A West Virginia.

Barrett Barnes, OF: Solid-average runner; average power; ability to square ball up; average range; good plate discipline; fringe-average arm; will have to move to a corner. Barnes creates solid contact and has an advanced approach, but limited power and speed make me think he is more of a second-division player.

Josh Bell, OF: Average arm; below to well below-average runner; switch hitter; slow bat; trouble with tracking pitches; naturally strong; loud load from right side. Bell has not looked like a top prospect this spring and will need to regroup before beginning the 2013 season. I would not be surprised if the Pirates held Bell back in extended spring to work on hitting mechanics.

Tyler Glasnow, RHP: Delivery has deception; high leg kick; big frame; arm can get offline in back end of delivery; fastball 90-94 with good plane; curveball 75-78; sharp vertical break; flashed plus; still needs to develop consistency with CB; will have to mix in the changeup; very promising arm. Glasnow showed the polish and ability to start the season in Low-A West Virginia.

Alen Hanson, IF: Plus runner; good bat speed; crushes mistakes; sits back on balls defensively; will have to move to second; will hammer mistakes, and has no problem letting you know he did so. However, I have my concerns that he might struggle against quality pitching and profile much better as a mid- to high-5 as opposed to a role-6 player.

Dilson Herrera, 2B: Trouble squaring up quality pitching; average arm; will have to play on right side of the infield; flashes bat speed for small frame; needs to cross over skills from batting practice to the game; has mildly filled out frame. Herrera has tools, but if he does not make solid contact they have the potential to be wasted.

Clay Holmes, RHP: Huge frame; fastball 91-93; steep plane; can add cutting action; curveball 79-81; sharp break with depth; does not always finish on top; flashed plus. Holmes has a large, projectable body, but these types usually take their time figuring out their mechanics. He should be expected to start the season in Low-A West Virginia, where he will focus on improving his command.

David Jagoditsh, RHP: Huge frame completely filled out; stretch only; ¾ arm slot; 89-93 FB with plenty of sink; 76-80 slurvey breaking ball; well below-average command; poor fielder; athleticism and ability to repeat delivery a large question. A 33rd-round pick in 2011 who flashes the ability to be something in the bullpen.

Wyatt Mathisen, C: Open stance; high leg kick; quick hands; raw power; may need to tone down leg kick vs. higher-level pitching; faced no defensive challenges; made routine play; classic catcher frame. Overall, Mathison’s future looks bright, and he should move to Low-A West Virginia in 2013.

Gregory Polanco, CF: Impressive frame; plus raw power; loud contact; as one scout put it, “When he runs, he sort of just floats”; squared up a 96-mph fastball (off of Aaron Sanchez) to CF that just kept rising and stretched it to a triple; working to quiet his load. Polanco shows all the ability to be a potential five-tool outfielder.

Well, it looks like I was wrong. Pirates DFA'ed Hunter Strickland and Clint Robinson. Very disapointing.

Strickland may have a good shot at clearing waivers but I doubt Robinson will.

            Re: 2013 OSFM: Pittsburgh Pirates

it seems to me that everybody has given up on Jose Tabata. the sentiment that I get from reading stuff online and with his poor play in spring training and his recent history people want to run him out of town. I feel like that would be a mistake, being that he is only 24. look at Jose Bautista and Brandon moss, we gave up on them too soon and look how that turned out. I don't have any illusions that Jose Tabata is going to be the next Jose Bautista, but a Shane Victorino type maybe. wish he still had some options or we would have left him in AAA longer. people seemed to have wanted Presley or Felix Pie to stay and Tabata to go, but to me that's just crazy. I read somewhere that major league hitters don't peak until between the ages of 27 and 32. I may be alone in this but I'm pulling for Jose to get it together and hoping they don't make another Jose Bautista sized error.

I for one really like Jose Tabata. I think he's played really well this spring and is showing signs of rejuvenation. I'm hoping somebody lit a fire under him to play to his full potential. An outfield of Marte, McCutchen, and Tabata could be great for years to come as they all are locked in for several years.

I notice from the spreadsheet on the main thread that the pirates players arent rated yet, or at least they are in yellow. is this something that's done and hasn't been turned in yet or do you guys still need help with this. as I think I stated before I have done complete roster sets on xbox and could help out with this if need be. I've always been particular about ratings and stances but never cared much for faces and equipment. I'm really anxious to see how you guys rated them if it's complete. I know its at the end now but if there's anything else I can do let me know....

thanks for all the hard work go bucs....

                      Re: 2013 OSFM: Pittsburgh Pirates

Hey guys. Thought this might help with setting the rosters, either for the Opening Day set or for the Pirates updated set.

                      Minor League Rotations

                      Indianapolis

Gerrit Cole, Kyle McPherson, Phil Irwin, Andy Oliver, Kris Johnson

Notes: The current plan is to stretch out Johnson and use him as the fifth starter. Johnson started today in a minor league game, although it was on the road in Tampa. Cole, McPherson, and Irwin could all make it to Pittsburgh this year. Oliver could as well, but he needs to focus on fixing his control problems for that to happen.

                      Altoona

Jameson Taillon, Stolmy Pimentel, Casey Sadler, Brandon Cumpton, Tyler Waldron

Notes: I’ve been impressed with Pimentel this Spring. Luis Sanz will be a long reliever, and could get time in the rotation if someone goes down. Obviously Taillon is the guy to watch here, but I think Sadler is a sleeper prospect with a nice three pitch mix. I see Cumpton and Waldron as relievers in the long-term.

                      Bradenton

Nick Kingham, Robby Rowland, Adrian Sampson, Matt Benedict, Zack Von Rosenberg/Eliecer Navarro

Notes: Von Rosenberg and Navarro will be piggybacking starts. Rowland and Benedict are extreme ground ball pitchers, so they should have better results pitching half of their games in McKechnie. Kingham is the highlight of the rotation. Adrian Sampson was a fifth round pick last year, and is a sleeper pitching prospect to watch. Zack Dodson could return here when his suspension is up. He could also go back to West Virginia. That’s still up in the air.

                      West Virginia

Tyler Glasnow, Clay Holmes, Joely Rodriguez, John Kuchno, Orlando Castro

Notes: Ryan Hafner and Jason Creasy will both pitch in the swingman roles, getting multiple innings in relief once the starters come out. Glasnow and Holmes are the top prospects here. Kuchno profiles as a late inning reliever, but the Pirates tend to start their best arms in the lower levels, which is why he’s going here. Joely Rodriguez is a guy I’ve always liked as a sleeper. He’s a lefty who throws 87-91 MPH, but has thrown 91-94 in the past. His control is better in the 87-91 range. He also throws a changeup and a slider, and all three pitches have cutting movement. Castro has some good off-speed stuff, and I like him better than most of the international left-handers who have come through the lower levels. As I mentioned above, Dodson could return here when his suspension is complete. Luis Heredia will start the season in extended Spring Training, but should be with West Virginia by the end of the year. He’ll be on a “Jameson Taillon 2011″ path, skipping the first part of the season to avoid the cold weather, but more importantly to make sure he has enough innings to finish the year.

                        Minor League Lineups

                        Indianapolis

                        Catcher - Tony Sanchez

                        First Base - Matt Hague

Second Base - Ivan De Jesus Jr.

                        Shortstop - Jordy Mercer

                        Third Base - Jared Goedert

                        Left Field - Alex Presley

                        Center Field - Felix Pie

                        Right Field - Jerry Sands

                        Designated Hitter - ???

Notes: Originally Clint Robinson would have been in the mix here, with Robinson and Hague sharing first base. Robinson was claimed today by the Toronto Blue Jays, and there are a few guys in the mix for his spot. Matt Curry is a possibility, but not a guarantee. De Jesus and Mercer will switch back and forth, with both getting time at shortstop. Presley and Pie will both get time in center field. Hague could get some time at third base. Darren Ford and Brett Carroll will be the backup outfielders. Oscar Tejeda and Alex Valdez should also get some time off the bench.

Alex Dickerson will be getting time in left field in Altoona this year.

                        Altoona

                        Catcher - Carlos Paulino

                        First Base - Matt Curry

                        Second Base - Jarek Cunningham

                        Shortstop - Gift Ngoepe

                        Third Base - Stefan Welch

                        Left Field - Alex Dickerson

Center Field - Mel Rojas Jr.

                        Right Field - Andrew Lambo

                        Designated Hitter - Adalberto Santos

Notes: Altoona’s roster is going to be crazy. I wrote about that earlier today, but here is the rundown. Curry will play primarily at first base, with Alex Dickerson getting time in left field. Curry could play left, and both could get time at DH. Stefan Welch could get some time at first base and DH. Adalberto Santos could get time in left field, second base, third base, and DH. Andrew Lambo could also get time at first base and DH. And all of this could change, depending on how the Clint Robinson situation plays out.

                        Bradenton

                        Catcher - Jacob Stallings

                        First Base - Jose Osuna

                        Second Base - Dan Gamache

                        Shortstop - Alen Hanson

                        Third Base - Eric Avila

                        Left Field - Taylor Lewis

                        Center Field - Gregory Polanco

                        Right Field - Willy Garcia

                        Designated Hitter - Carlos Mesa

Notes: Jacob Stallings will split time with Elias Diaz, but Stallings will get more playing time. Eric Avila will begin the year getting most of the time at third base. Chris Lashmet could get some time there. I’m glad I’m covering this team this year.

                        West Virginia

                        Catcher - Wyatt Mathisen

                        First Base - Stetson Allie

                        Second Base - Dilson Herrera

                        Shortstop - Max Moroff

                        Third Base - Eric Wood

                        Left Field - Raul Fortunato

                        Center Field - Barrett Barnes

                        Right Field - Josh Bell

                        Designated Hitter - Walker Gourley

Notes: The speculation that Josh Bell will start the year in extended Spring Training isn’t accurate. Raul Fortunato and Walker Gourley could split time in left field. Jonathan Schwind has also been spending some time in left field recently, and I could see him getting some playing time. The rest of this lineup should be consistent, and a fun group to watch.

If you're referring to the OSFM opening day set its fantastic. However, usually later in the day or a few days after, the guys who do the pirates set for the OSFM re release it with a complete Pirates OSFM which is probably the greatest thing ever
