    Re: Classic Teams

Only the earliest teams did not have an excess of players through the season. There are usually at least 15 pitchers that pitched for a team any season, and often 20+ position players. I would prefer having 3 or so pitchers and 3 or so players in the minors to fill in if someone becomes injured. The '89 Oakland team, for example, had 25 position players through the year, and 16 pitchers that played at the MLB level that year.

It will be a pain and a bit of work, but I am going to use dummy players for all spots going in, and then as injuries occur I will make fill in players for that individual team.

Baseball just isn't the same if there is not threat of injury and lineup/rotation adjustments.

Giants’ starter Johnny Antonelli carried a no hitter into the sixth and was masterful in a complete game 4-1 victory in the NL Wildcard game. The only blemish on his outing would be pinch hitter Dave Ricketts coming around to score on a Curt Flood single to center. Ricketts broke up the no-hit bid with none out pinch hitting for Cardinals’ starter Bob Gibson in the sixth.

Gibson wasn’t his usual dominate self and the Giants took advantage with an RBI triple from Whitey Lockman, a run scoring infield single by Willie Mays, and a solo shot to left field by Al Dark. Dark would later homer again off Al Jackson in the 6th. I'm now 2-0 with these rosters

ALDS matchups on the next post and making roster adjustments as I go.

I totally get what you are shooting for, Billy, but, for me, I really only play postseason mode with MLB 13. I leave injuries on though because in postseason, you tend to only lose the player for the game he is playing in. The injuries are not long term losses.

          Re: Classic Teams

I suffered my first setback with my beloved ’04 Red Sox against our arch nemesis the ‘61 Yankees in the ALDS opener. It began as a pitcher’s duel between Pedro Martinez and Whitey Ford until Mark Bellhorn broke the stalemate poking a solo homer just inside the left field foul pole. The lead was short-lived as the Yankees got the run right back on a fielder’s choice as the Sox failed to turn a double play. However, the Yankees second baseman Tony Kubek was feeling generous as he launched a throw into the seats allowing an unearned run and Boston was back on top 2-1. Kubek was playing somewhat out of position due to a last minute pregame scratch of Bobby Richardson as a lingering injury kept him on the bench.

It looked as though that one run might be enough but Martinez hung a changeup to Elston Howard and he deposited it into the left field bleachers for a two run homer. Shortly after this, Clete Boyer left Earth with a solo blast to pad the lead 4-2. The Sox put the leadoff runner aboard in the ninth but were unable to muster a rally dropping the series opener. Highlights are below. I won’t inundate this thread with all of my results. I’m just showcasing some of the gameplay. Lovin’ it!

The Sox are within a whisper of being eliminated from post season play with a lackluster effort in a 7-1 loss. Ralph Terry was marvelous for the Yankees in a complete game victory, but the Red sox didn’t help themselves committing three errors. Boston third baseman Bill Mueller put the team in the hole early firing a sure-fire double play ball into right field which put runners on second and third with no one out. Two sacrifice flies later, the Sox were down 2-0 after one inning.

The Yankees broke things open in the fourth scoring two on a bases loaded double by Clete Boyer and another on a throwing error by Jason Varitek. Bill Skowron also added a solo shot to left as they coasted to victory. I can’t win with my favorite team Highlights below.

                  Highlights:

                  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYhjj...ature=youtu.be

The ’75 “Big Red Machine” flexed its muscles and decimated the ’55 Dodger bullpen in a 9-3 thumping in the opener of their ALDS series. Leading throughout the game, the Dodgers did threaten in the eighth loading the bases with no one out. They had just closed the gap to the tune of 5-3, but Clay Carroll got successive line outs courtesy of Carl Furillo and Roy Campanella before striking out Sandy Amoros to quell the Dodger bats. In the bottom half of the inning, The Reds exploded as they went back to back to back as Perez, Foster, and Bench put the game out of reach. For Foster, it was his third homer of the game as the Reds hit six long balls in all with Pete Rose adding one earlier in the contest.

Gary Nolan was strong in his six inning win and the highlights are below. Another win for me

Yeah, I couldn't believe it either, Joey. Ball was just jumping off my bat. Hit three homers with one player just one other time before and it was with Fred Lynn in my All-Time Team Season I have going on with MLB 12. He had 9 RBI that game as one of the homers was a grand slam. As a team though I never hit 6 before.

Well not hard to tell summer is over. Less time to play baseball which sucks but it'll be good to get back to my grade 6 students. I'm now an even 3-3 in my greatest teams postseason play. Latest score below.

This is a strange game indeed. Mike Cuellar was pitching no hit ball into the fifth and one play would lead to his unraveling courtesy of Paul Blair (me actually). With runners on first and second a fly ball was lifted into center. Blair lost the ball in the sun (translation > my thumb slipped off the right joy stick) and it bounced past him to the fence. It would be scored a triple and a Ray Fosse grounder later it would be 3-0 A's. The very next inning, The A's sensed blood in the water and with the bases loaded Joe Rudi would clear then with a double into the right center field gap. However, Paul Blair's fingerprints were all over this (not my fault this time )

At the beginning of the inning with a runner on first, Bert Campaneris would single to center but Blair overran the ball allowing the runners to take an extra base. With runners on second and third, The O's elected to load the bases on an intentional walk for a DP chance but Rudi drove the nail in the coffin. Another complete game hung on me. This time Catfish Hunter was the culprit keeping me off balance throughout the game. Highlights below. Next up I'll be controlling the '54 Giants as they open their ALDS Series against the '71 Pirates.

Tonight I had one of my most memorable games in a while. I was running the '54 Giants and jumped out to an earlier 3-0 lead. Sal Maglie was spinning a gem, and with an additional run supplied by a Monte Irvin solo shot, it looked as though the Giants would cruise to victory. However, the wheels came off in the top of the sixth and the Pirates rallied off a missed DP opportunity. Giants second baseman Davey Williams whiffed on a hard grounder which allowed the inning to continue and by the time the Giants returned to the dugout, it was a tie game. Then in the eighth, Giants reliever, Ramon Monzant, would uncork a wild pitch allowing a runner on third to score to give the Pirates the lead. However, with one out in the bottom of the ninth, Dusty Rhodes would drill a pinch hit solo homer to the deepest part of AT&T Park as he batted for reliever Windy McCall. This would set the stage for some extra inning magic courtesy of the "Say Hey" Kid. Willie Mays would lead of the tenth with a double to the left center field gap an two batters later would plate the winning run thanks to a single by Whitey Lockman to take a 2-0 stranglehold in the NLDS. Highlights below.

I had to post this result as it was one of my best pitching efforts of this “dream postseason”. The ’74 A’s took a 2-0 lead in their ALCS series against the ’61 Yankees. Jim “Catfish” Hunter almost went the distance improving to 3-0 in the postseason with a miniscule 0.72 ERA. In 24.2 innings he has only surrendered 13 hits. He has also struck out 11 batters while only walking 2. Reggie Jackson continues to earn his “Mr. October” moniker as he is hitting .462 with 4 homers and 10 RBI in only 6 games. The series now shifts to Oakland and it’ll be Glenn Abbott facing Bill Stafford. Highlights below.

Thanks raneman. I'm a "soon to be" 47 year old lifelong baseball fan as my father use to talk about the great teams of the past. I started out as an Expo fan but shifted to the Red Sox during the '75 World Series and never looked back. Here on PEI, baseball is not as big as it once was. Golf and soccer have taken over as the summer sports. As far as vacationing, we have terrific beaches here as I spend my summers on them being a teacher by trade. I'm very nostalgic when it comes to baseball, and I just have a need to have these greatest teams in my back pocket.

If you like the rosters now, you'll love what I am undertaking now. I'm in the process of making all the players' ratings year specific. As you may have noticed, the elite players have that all time rating hung on them. The formula I'm employing is very rudimentary focusing on position players' splits for contact and power and the pitchers' ERA. It goes like this:

                                Position Players
                                BA Splits
                                99-90 - <.325
                                89-80 - .324 - .300
                                79-70 - .299 - .275
                                69-60 - .274 - .250
                                59-50 - .249 - .225
                                49-40 - .224 - .200
                                39-30 - .199 - .175

                                HR Power Splits
                                99-90 - < 50
                                89-80 - 49 - 40
                                79-70 - 39 - 30
                                69-60 - 29 - 20
                                59-50 - 19 - 10

I consider doubles when looking at power and pitchers' WHIP and strikeouts as well in my ratings but that's it. Defensive numbers and speed for the position players are decent but I might do some minor touch - ups there. I've looked at other rosters and my numbers are comparable so far. I think it'll take about a month to re-rate them but I don't plan on buying MLB 14 with the PS4 coming out, so I'll be using these for the next year and a half. I feel this investment of time will be worth it. I'll wait until the price drops for the PS4

Pitching, defense and 2 out RBIs win a lot of ball games!
