Yep, that was Butch, Jack. In my mind, Dewey is a HOFer and my favorite Red Sox. More highlights to come as I've completed some ALDS games.
Pitching, defense and 2 out RBIs win a lot of ball games!

Fisk, Yastrzemski Pace Sox to 2-0 ALDS Lead

Carlton Fisk played the hero for the second consecutive game and Carl Yastrzemski added 5 RBI in the getaway game as the Red Sox took a commanding 2-0 in the ALDS in Kansas City.

In Game 1, The Sox offense was stymied by the brilliant pitching of Kansas City starter Bret Saberhagen. He went 8 strong innings surrendering only 5 hits while striking out 5 batters. Pitching into the ninth, he then turned a 2-0 lead over to the Royals’ bullpen, and that’s when thing began to unravel. After Boston loaded the bases with no one out, Kansas City called on their stopper, Dan Quisenberry, to face Carlton Fisk. Fisk would launch a majestic blast into the left field bleachers for the game winning granny. Luis Tiant was equally impressive going 7 2/3 innings before turning things over to the Sox pen in the eighth. Bill Campbell would garner the 4-2 win with Bob Stanley notching the save.

      http://youtu.be/Tn-9XKMDmgQ

Game 2 starters, Bill Lee and Charlie Liebrandt, both would have trouble settling in during the opening frame. The Sox jumped out to an early 2-0 lead only to see the scoreboard leveled by the Royals in the bottom half of the first inning. Boston would then grab a 3-2 lead after the third inning and wouldn’t look back unleashing a 15 hit barrage in a 9-2 drubbing. Carl Yastrzemski added a three run homer and drove in two others, while Carlton Fisk would add yet another run scoring hit. Jim Rice was 4-5 with a two run homer and Butch Hobson even got in on the action drilling a solo blast, his first hit of the playoffs. Bill Lee went the distance for the complete game win, striking out 8 and allowing seven hits. No free passes were issued by Lee.

Yastrzemski and Fisk have combined for 11 RBI in three playoffs games, and Red Sox pitching has only allowed 5 runs in 32 innings.

The One that Got Away - ALDS Now 2-1

Returning home to Fenway, the Red Sox looked to wrap things up and they were on the brink of doing just that. For the second consecutive game the Red Sox would take a 2-0 lead only to be knotted by the Royals after four innings. George “Boomer” Scott did all he could to end this series as he was a perfect 3 - 3 with 2 RBI including what looked to be the game winning RBI single in the eighth inning for a 3-2 Boston lead. After pitching a strong eighth, Andy Hassler was lifted for stopper, Bob Stanley in the yop on the ninth. The Royals countered with light hitting infielder, Buddy Biancalana to pinch hit for catcher Jim Sundberg. On the first pitch he saw from Stanley, he drove it into the right field bullpen to tie the game much to the disbelief of the Fenway Faithful. The Royals would add two more runs on a two run triple by George Brett to secure their first win of the series. Stanley would be charged with all 3 of the ninth inning runs and the loss. Neither starter was in line for a decision in this one. Royals’ starter Danny Jackson was chased after 5 innings and Red Sox starter Dennis Eckersley would hang around for 7 innings leaving with the scored tied 2-2. The win went to Steve Farr with Dan Quisenberry registering the save.

This time it would be the Royals that delivered some heavy body blows in the hit column. They would hit 4 doubles, a triple and a homer out of the 14 total hits they collected off the Sox pitching corps. George Brett has been nearly impossible to get out, batting a torrid .692. Willie Wilson also has been hot hitting at a .385 clip with a few bunt base hits. Both he and Brett have two stolen bases each.

At this point, the Red Sox have more contributing offensively most notably Fisk and Yastrzemski, but Jerry Remy .400 and Jim Rice .444 have also chimed in along with George Scott who sits at a healthy .313 clip.

That was a bomb that Pudge hit! Dewey's one of those players that flew under the radar. His numbers are comparable to Tony Perez, who is in the HOF.
          Evans 20 yrs in MLB/ 379 hr's/ 1,346 rbi/ .272 bave/ .369 ob%/ .473 slug%

          Perez 23 yrs./ 379 hr's/ 1,652 rbi/ .279 bave/ .341 ob%/ .463 slug%

Evans was an outstanding fielder and Perez was average in the field.

Hobson was one of those guys that would hit 25- 30 HR's and rack up like 80- 90 RBI's?

Man, I used to love to hold those Strat-O-Matic cards and roll the dice. Hobson was always rated a 4/ worst range, at 3rd base and Evans was always a 1/ best range, with a -3 or -4 (cannon) arm in RF.

BTW-- during my games, it seems as if the defensive players react TOO QUICKLY fielding the ball. Also, the infielders are just TOO QUICK in releasing the ball. Any tips on what slider(s) need adjusting? Thanks!
          Jack

              Re: Classic Teams

I frequently mix up sliders just to see how the game changes. In my opinion contact and pitch speed should be the same. I'm also on board with lower relief stamina to get the entire bullpen in the pitching within that week.

Good to hear, Jack. My sliders for power for both me and the cpu are actually now at 7 instead of 6 but other than that I was right. I however have grim news to report:

Brett Leads Royals to Deciding Game 5

George Brett struck again delivering a three run homer off Boston starter Mike Torrez in the fifth, and the Royals’ bullpen held on for a 4-2 victory forcing a game five back in Kansas City. Brett has five RBI in the last two games and has delivered the game winning RBI in both victories.

Mark Gubicza was terrific handcuffing the Red Sox for the better part of the game striking out nine batters. Boston had their chance loading the bases with no one out in the eighth with the score 4-2. However, Mike LaCoss struck out Carlton Fisk and Fred Lynn grounded into an inning ending double play. Torrez dodged in and out of danger throughout the game but played with fire one too many times in the fifth. After allowing two singles, he struck out the next two batters but he couldn’t retire Brett as he launched his three run shot over the left field wall.

                    And this:

                    Royals Complete Improbable Comeback

In a rematch of game 1 starters, Bret Saberhagen outduelled Luis Tiant and the Royals moved on to the ALCS capping their divisional series comeback with a 2-1 victory. It was the first time in the series that the home team came out on top.

The Red Sox had Saberhagen on the ropes a few time including a bases loaded opportunity in the seventh with one out. However, the potent offensive that had been present in the first two games remained absent for the third consecutive time, and the lack of the big hit hurt Boston in this one.

                    http://youtu.be/AIiVp56t3iU

If anything, at least I'm honest. I could have kept playing until I won. Next time I will LOL. Well time to give the 2007 squad a try.

Yeah that sucked but I'm up 1-0 on the '99 Yanks with my '07 Red Sox in the ALDS. Incidentally Jack, I made some changes to my sliders on that last page in red (I also included an additional setting I'm playing with in brackets). Not that it should affect you but I found there were too many solid, extra base hits and homers for my liking. Not ridiculous, it just seemed a bit off. I had adjusted my sliders for these roster before I made them season appropriate. I can't seem to find my original settings as I must have deleted them, so I'm still trying to find my happy place with this revamped roster. Getting closer though.

Thanks for slider updates!! I did edit Yogi Berra to be wearing #8 and also changed Mickey Lolich to look a bit more like Boog Powell. LOL!

Yeah, I can't take credit for the faces though. I created maybe 75 players, but the rest I "borrowed" from the community. Some fantastic artists out there, and I know Knight does his all of his own faces. Had a great game this PM in a 3-2 loss. It felt just right and I readjusted the sliders yet again with some alternate selections in brackets.
Pitching, defense and 2 out RBIs win a lot of ball games!

I would post it if I knew how. Anyone care to share the how-to info?
