Re: HOF "the right way"

I've only pitched on AS. With classic.

I kind of agree with Bobhead...but not exactly.

The CPU seemed to only score via the long ball (probably 70% of their runs). It became kind of frustrating for me.

Also, though my ERA was decent (just under 4.00), quality starts were far too frequency, even though my BB and H/9 looked good. There was a lack of CPU rallies.

So, how did my ERA even get near 4.00? Simple. My bullpen. I can't explain it, nor do I really care enough at this point to try and figure it out. If someone would offer a slider change or explanation as to why AS played out this way, I'd continue my Yanks franchise in a heartbeat. It was just getting too predictable. 6+ strong from my starter, and a heart-wrenching 9 outs remaining where I was basically wondering whether or not the CPU would string together 7 zero out runs.

HOF seems much more realistic to me (as far as default goes). But again, just because I saw this doesn't mean you will. Different abilities, teams, and interfaces have a lot to do with achieving a realistic game of baseball.

If you're struggling hitting on Hall of Fame try messing with the Timing slider. A bump of just a point has helped me alot. I'm always just missing those hanging curves.

HOF is the way to go. AS is just so weird. It almost is like hitting homeruns is the only way to score runs. Much like a previous post said. Triplethreat, I would love to see what slider tweaks you are using on HOF. I would like to try them and make the necessary changes I need to make for my playing style.

I think he posted them a few pages back. Very minimal.

Re: HOF "the right way"

Guys, some advice please. I play on HOF and I use meter pitching and currently my pitching sliders are at default. My problem is that I am pretty much ALWAYS early on my release point causing pitches I want low in the zone to end up right down the middle and getting pounded. Pitches I want up in the zone end up way too high. I realize this is mainly due to human error or bad timing with the meter, but would raising the consistency slider to 6 help? Has anyone tried this slider higher than default? Should I raise both control and consistency to 6 or would give me too much of an advantage? My cpu hitting sliders are all at default except contact is at 4. Thanks

Re: HOF "the right way"

I'm using the fictional rosters with fantasy draft (which are slanted toward the pitchers slightly), so my sliders are probably not good for anyone else.

I just played a great 4-game series and with 2 minor tweaks (AI contact -1, and solid hits -1), I may be in the sweet spot. I'll post the sliders Im using for the next 20 games later.

The best thing I did was turn API off, walked 14 guys in 4 games.

I also used power swing (sparingly) for the first time. Absolutely crushed a ball that went out of the stadium (GAB) over the bullpen in RF. I put so much "body English" on it I almost fell outta my chair.

I did find with consistency less than 4 that relievers are highly combustible. At 4, they're realistic (control at 4 also, strikes at 3).

Re: HOF "the right way"

After playing a bunch of games on near default HOF, there's one thing...statistically speaking, that bothers me. This relates to meter pitching.

But first...some rough stats (from memory).

I have allowed slightly less hits than innings pitched. Check.

I give up almost exactly 1 HR per game. Check.

I'm walking just over 4 hitters per 9...okay, that's high for SF, but I nibble more than I probably should.

I'm striking out just (and I mean JUST) over 7 hitters per 9. This is fine for MLB average purposes, but just a tad too low SF.

My ERA is near 4.50...that's high for SF, but still acceptable as it relates to MLB averages. Undoubtedly, my inflated BB/9 are the cause of this.

Now, here's where I'd like some feedback...

The CPU is NOT swinging and missing enough, and their plate vision is practically superhuman. I get my K's, but MAN...on default HOF, most hitters won't even flinch at pitches just off the black.

My experience with slider tweaking says that if I drop contact a click, I should compensate by raising either solid hits or power a click. Afterall, I don't want to mess with the numbers above.

I went with contact 4, and solid hits 6.

What do you guys think? Would dropping timing instead of contact give me the least statistically invasive results? I haven't messed with CPU timing this year. I basically want to keep the cpu as similar as it is to now, without having to accept the lack of CPU misses and overall 'eagle vision.' Does anyone have any input on this?

How do I decrease vision and discipline, while retaining batting AVG and power?

That's a tough one man. Unfortunately, I think it has more to do with the core AI than it does with any sliders. I've always noticed this problem going back to '08, when I first started with the franchise. I've been messing with CPU contact/solid hits all year, and I can only get the CPU to put up a respectable offensive threat with contact at default, or 6. I tried 4 for a while, with solid hits at both 5 and 6, but it's been to easy for me to pitch comfortably.

I'm done messing with any tweaks to the CPU offense, and I'm just going to leave the CPU at HOF default from here on out. Here's what I've been able to do through 85 games with a mix of CPU contact/solid hit at 4, 5, and 6.

ERA - 3.16
Hits - 7.9/gm
HR - 0.69/gm
BB - 2.6/gm
SO - 7.5/gm

I know those all seem a little too good, but... those are all actually right in line what real life Atlanta is doing so far this year. The only stat that's slightly off is BB, but only by 0.3/gm.

I've spent most of the year with contact and power at 4 for the cpu, so I think having those both at default will force me to walk a few extra batters. I already have my control and consistency down to 3/3, and I think I may drop my consistency one more click. I might even try CPU contact/solid hits at 6/4 for a little while as well.

I play to win the games first and foremost(which is hard enough in it's own right, lol..), so I have to make the the CPU force me to walk them more. I just can't make myself needlessly change my approach for the sake of walks. Luckily, the real life Braves have been doing a good job of making me feel pretty good about my pitching stats this year, so that helps. I'm only 45-40, so it's not like my great pitching is throwing the competitive balance off either.

Jgainsey, I knew I could count on you to set me straight.

Last night, at contact 4 and solid hits 6, I walked 5 hitters with Matt Cain and he STILL threw 7 scoreless innings. That's just not right. Yes, it's only one game, but something like that should pretty much never happen...unless Matt Cain was secretly Nolan Ryan.

I guess I'll just have to deal with it. Which honestly, I'm fine with. My stats are pretty much money. It's just...

If I miss, even ever so slightly on the meter line, the umpire just freaking squeezes me...all while the CPU hitter just magically takes it...acting as if the ball was 15 feet outside! LOL!

My K/9 at default HOF is around 7.10. Acceptable? Absolutely. Over my last 15-20 games, I've had a 9 K game from Lincecum, and three 8 K games (Lincecum, Zito, Bumgarner). I'd mainly just like to see slightly less of those 3 SO performances...especially from Johnathan Sanchez.

Maybe changing my approach is better than changing sliders. I need to stop nibbling and build up some pitch confidence. That's when I find the CPU most susceptible to missing/taking strike 3 anyway.

Now...what to to about those umpires....

Hmmm......

Thanks Jgainsey.

I've seen this problem also, but I haven't had any issues with CPU Contact being decreased (I keep it at 3). Granted, my Human Pitching sliders are greatly decreased too, so perhaps try that? If you decrease Pitch Consistency a bit, your pitcher won't be on cruise control all the time, but the CPU will still actually miss pitches, and maybe even chase them.

I was thinking that too...

Drop contact, drop user consistency or control to compensate...

But that leads to testing XBH numbers, which leads to dropping run speed, which leads to raising reaction speed...LOL! And on and on and on.

I may give it another game or two with a reduced contact, but it will have a very short leash. My numbers on default HOF are quite good. Truthfully, if I had a K for every time the umps pinched me on 2-2 counts, I wouldn't have even made these posts. How does the CPU lay off those pitches? They're strikes!

I tried CPU contact at 3 for a little when I first dropped my control and consistency to 3, but it didn't take long for me to adapt.

It's probably an avenue worth testing for a prolonged period, but I just don't have much slider tweaking enthusiasm left at this point in the life of the game. If my numbers at default(or close to it) weren't so good, I'd probably mess around with lower cpu contact and human control/consistency. But as it is now, I'm pretty content with HOF on default for the CPU's offensive sliders.

There's definitely room for AI improvement going forward. Some combination of less human control and a more patient approach from the CPU would be great to see in next year's game. It's a tricky balance for SCEA to find, especially when you consider the different skill sets of everyone who plays the game, but I trust that they can work some kind of magic. The approach from the AI is definitely a little better from last year's game, so hopefully they can continue in the right direction.

You nailed it right there, Jgainsey. It's an AI 'issue'...if we can really even call it that.

SCEA put out a killer product, yet again.

On AS, I was able to get those calls, those misses, and that CPU patience. Unfortunately, without a CPU slider bump, every stat line of mine would have been inflated. It was time to go back to my home: HOF.

I think you guys know the dilemma: Perfect H/9, perfect BB/9, perfect HR/9....but.....there's just that ONE stat or that ONE thing that AI does or doesn't do. Which, in a perfect world, could be adjusted by sliders. Unfortunately, most sliders address multiple facets of the game and simply aren't worth throwing off the entire symmetry for.

I'm happy with default HOF. Maybe with a little more meter practice, I'll start to hit my line better and begin to get those calls.

By the way, I've made the CPU look pretty stupid on some nasty breaking balls in the dirt. I wonder why sometimes I can get away with this, and sometimes I can't?

Man...just one hour with SCEA SD! I'd love to truly understand the logic behind this game. It's a masterpiece, that's for sure.

For those playing HOF default, does that also include wind, manager hook, reliever stamina? Seems like those are the three that may need a slight change without impacting gameplay?
