Re: The Official 1996, 1997, and 1998 Roster Project

Good stuff, reading it reminds me of the holidays. Hope you all had a good Christmas, here's an update I've been meaning to make

We're going to start off on a negative note first, just to get it out of the way.

It's not a gamekiller, but for some reason when you go to Franchise or Season mode some players lose their green R symbol and some gain it. Neither should happen. It all also just randomizes All Stars on every team. At first I thought it was a service problem issue but nope. For some reason, and I can't figure it out, players with 0 games, 0 everything are not always guaranteed to show the proper green R in Franchise or Season. Some will, some won't. I have no idea why this behaves erratic.

And some of you probably knew this, but you can only bring 40 man rosters into Season mode so you have to set your 40 mans. Right now I'm setting them, as well as lineups and rotations for every team. You can adjust if you'd like for Season. If not just play Franchise.

I have not done it yet, but you may also want to user control all teams in both modes so you can monitor call ups and send downs unless you don't care. I'll post the house rules I'm using later.

The good news however, is that these babies still really shine in the roster menus. Playing an exhibition game, be it MLB or AAA is sleek when the lineup card shows real rookie/vet status along with All Stars. It's also great just skimming through a clubs system and seeing the talent they have stocked up. Some are loaded, some are thinner. Some are just stacked at certain positions. It's truly a blast in this mode alone so I won't let it ruin my fun with the game. Hopefully you don't either.

One thing that shouldn't matter gameplay wise at all but I'm mentioning anyway though is the ratings. For some reason, when I port them the overall changes. All rating categories are the same, but the overall just fluctuates up or a down a bit. It's whatever, but so it goes.

Now, on to the good stuff.

Playing as AAA teams is exciting. You have some big power hitters, super base stealers, blue chip prospects, vets, old vets playing their last baseball, and the Drew Henson's of the world. Each team is only real players who all played at least a little in the MLB. It's a nice mixture, with some teams being young and rich with talent, and some being older without much or just younger and nothing overly dangerous. Obviously it's fun to call the players up, but don't sleep on the minors!

I suppose by now you're all saying that's great, but shut up and tell us when they'll be done.

Right now I have 5 teams completely done. Some need a lot more than others yet, but I hope to do at least a day if I'm lucky, maybe more if time wills it. It's a tedious process but I try to do a little grinding at it when I can. I will definitely drop 1998 for 17 and will let everyone know if there's anything to expect after that.

But for now, it looks like it will be a great asset to any retro fans collection. I haven't got to test how it all works out in the modes yet but I know it will be a lot of fun no matter what. Injuries and fatigue add depth and more decision making. Trades become more interesting. Entire organizations can be shook up if you want. It's your playground and if you wan't to keep that prospect you wish was kept like Paul Konerko in LA, then do it. But if you want to bring him to the Sox you made need to decide if your better talent like Carlos Lee or an MLB player is up for sale. It's a fun new element.

However you play is cool, but below will be my house rules I am going to try playing by.

            1. Realistically utilize call ups

I have the rosters set for MLB already due to amount of games played, and it would be easy to just replace every majors player with someone higher if possible, but not very sim-like.

If a player gets injured then absolutely make a call up. If a guy is a like a 63 rated starter and really struggling after the first month or so make a decision. You can be patient and bring up a 65 overall prospect maybe with a lot higher potential and let him progress or ride it out with the vet who has lower potential if you see fit. Some clubs have guys highly rated for the minors and if you have that itch to bring them up let the majors player earn a demotion first. Obviously don't bench your 33 year old 70 overall 1B with a D potential if he's hitting .265 with 7 HR's and 23 RBI's through the first 5 weeks just because your 1B prospect is a 75 overall B. Maybe if after a month or two of your prospect ripping it up in AAA you could bench someone on your team who is doing poorly and loses their job and the rook waits it out as a backup or role player in the majors.

            Anyway, that's just my take.

            2. Make realistic trades

What I mean is, if you're going to try and game the system to steal a good prospect then that's just cheating haha. I personally won't trade for guys like Halladay or Rollins who are with the teams they are well known for, but if you try trading for a major name you should give up some talent of your own. Be it MLB or AAA, but if you go out and get a 72 overall A prospect you better be getting rid of someone very close or at least a few good players like a B and high rated C or something of the sort. It's only fair. Other trades like a 24 year old 67 rated C catcher for a 20 year old 63 rated OF are cool and what not. If your club is deep somewhere and would like a little backup somewhere else it's sometimes addition by subtraction.

            3. September call ups

End up losing a key player or two to injury? Just had a bad year from some big stars? Maybe you were just a bad team to begin with. Either way, when it's late in the game and the playoffs are out of reach, go wild with the call ups. You don't have to, but maybe shut your Ace down the final three weeks if he's low on stamina. Sure it may only be for a season, but bring up your number 1 pitcher if you haven't already. Or the next one if you have. Whatever. Bring up the guys you want to have a look at. It makes a losing season way more fun this way.

So that's pretty much it for the style I'm going to try mimicking, and actually can't wait to you know... play the damn game haha.

So yeah, about 25 teams left in my Alpha build and then the stance/delivery checks.

It's a lot yet, but it's getting there. Looking forward to dropping this set once and for all so you guys can see what I'm talking about!

Seriously though. Thanks for the update. Im sure you know myself and others are hanging on every word and detail from you.

Playing a franchise with this is going to be a different experience than we are used to with retro rosters. You are really setting up a great immersion with this.

In my house, it's going to be a multi user controlled team franchise. It could take years to finish, but we have nothing but time.

Thanks brother. I know waiting sucks, but you're right - It's my hope that these breathe fresh life into Franchise mode for us all.

Feels good to know this is something I can share with you and your family, just like baseball was intended to be.

Finished two teams (Min and Cal) with Cal being one of the bigger projects left, but not any more.

I have about 21 and a half left to go, working on CWS now.

I'll do one complete photo preview of a finished team if anyone is interested.

Options are Bal, Bos, NYY, TB, Tor, Min, Cal, SFG for finished 👍

                  Update.

You guys can also expect some slight touch ups to fielder ratings for MLB players. Some big, some small.

The original set was designed to play defense for 2014. In this years game I am giving bumps where/if needed one team at a time.

Also making a little better progress, but everytime you get closer something else always needs attention.

I'll keep rolling, will update more as the clock winds down.

PS - This set is a blast 👊

Stopping in with another update for you guys

Finishing up some of the more time consuming teams but after today I hope to have less than 10 remaining.

And although I missed him the first time through since he technically never played in thr majors, but as a novelty I am going to add Yankees one time phenom Brien Taylor to the set(s).

It will be after his injury but the scouting reports say his speed topped out at 90 and he couldn't throw a curve for a strike no matter what. He won't kill it in the ratings, but will be fun ti have.

Will keep updating as I go.

Oh, and don't let Colorados AAA team get men on base early in the game. Juan Pierre is lead off with Chone Figgins and Matt Holliday backing him up. Pierre and Figgins are two of the fastest players in the game and give unprecedented range in the OF. Holliday is only a teenager but packs just enough punch to reckon with. Maybe not the best or deepest team in the set, but like them all very fun. Philly has a nice little system too.

It will be here soon enough.

Oh yeah, player likeness is a top priority as usual.

I'm not saying my CAPs are perfect or even great, but players I've either created or ported should be acceptable at the least just like in the MLB set. Of course some may be way thinner or less hairy than we remember them, but some of these dudes were just boys yet.

Equipment is tougher since minors photos are tough to come by and super time consuming.

The logic is guys who spent some years in the majors and were sent down will sport their normal MLB gear, like necklaces. I never gave them to young minors players because they haven't tasted that Selig $$$ yet. And they didn't get fancy or colorful cleats either. I want MLB players/Stars to sport only certain shoes or schemes of them to signify a shoe deal or status so to speak. It was easier to get accurate gear for major leaguers since there were more photos relevant to the year I was trying to recreate.

The same is with gear. Minors players are more conservatively outfitted with the standard turtlenecks, high or low socks, long or short sleeves, and limited/basic shoe and batting glove combination with the exception of some ready to bang high level prospects.

It gels for me and looks as era specific as I know how to make it. Finishing Texas tonight and then have 7 and a half teams left.

My goal is that everyone who downloads this set sees at least one or two names in there that they weren't expecting and brings back some memories.

You're welcome dude, I'm glad you like them.

If you mean hard coded onto the backs of their card, then no. If you mean via stats in play, then hopefully. I always try to replicate stats as accurately as I'm capable of.

As of now I am 4 and a half teams out. Then I need to set about 25 more teams stance and deliveries options and gloss over any fielding tweaks and we should be cleared for lift-off fam 👊

Don't want to speak to soon but its sounds like Opening Day could be a possibility!

What are your plans for MLBTS 18 Baumy? Are you getting the game? Just curious.

Was just coming in here to post about the status haha.

Yeah man, Oakland is like Kansas City and getting a lot of depth added to them so it's the equivalent of 2-3 teams and a lot of over-writing of ports, but then it's only 4 teams left.

I'm definitely getting 18 and definitely porting this over. However, I am so burnt on rosters right now I can't make a promise it will be swift. It should go faster than this beast, but is still quite a project.

Anyway, looking forward to the game and new classic stadium/uniform upgrades. Hopefully they added more throwbacks.

But you'll have this set soon enoug! Digging in on Oakland later tonight and then it's down to 3
