Re: The Official 1996, 1997, and 1998 Roster Project

Check this out guys, kind of a major update.

So I've been making good progress, down to 2 and a half teams left and then just stances/deliveries.

But remember when I said just when you think you're finished something new pops up?

So check this out, this is very, very cool.

I gathered all of the rosters from people who played a game in the minor leagues during the 1998 season. I pulled this data from statistics. A very large number of draft picks played at some level in 98 and were included, but here's where it gets good.

I was browsing drafts by year/team just for the hell of it and I noticed there were a few players drafted in 98 that didn't actually play a game that season. Almost all of the other players drafted did, but not these 10-15% of guys.

It doesn't sound like a big deal, but some of these names are huge upgrades to some clubs that are either much needed or just overkill.

We're talking major A potential talent like Ryan Braun, Mark Mulder, Barry Zito, Cliff Lee, etc.. etc...

These guys all technically were playing ball and were technically a part of that club, so I said let's do it. Let's put these guys in the game because it's way better with them than without them.

Take Baltimore for example. They come to mind as probably the least stacked system off the top of my head. They get a huge boost from adding Cliff Lee.

The absolute best part about all of this is that it won't take me very long to do. Some teams already have all their picks in game or didn't draft anyone relevant. This changes entire foundations of certain organizations and could be the difference in teams like Oakland's chances at making a playoff run. (Kenny Rogers is a good starter and they now have Mulder joining fellow prospect Tim Hudson in the minors. Noted that Barry Zito was not drafted by the A's or with them in this set)

Also a note on ratings. I leaned more towards rated higher than rated lower if that makes sense. Overalls should be pretty reasonable, but some 19 year old sluggers like Adam Dunn may have a 44 and 48 in power and a low vision or some kind of trade off like fielding. A lot depends on how far out they were from either playing the majors or how long before they started playing well in the majors. Like I said, rather than nerf the hell out of some big names I gave them a little pop instead. It's for fun. If you bring them up in year 2 of franchise and have a 20 year old prospect with 55 in power so what. That should amount to maybe 15-20+ home runs depending on how things out usually in my understanding. I'd say that's reasonable, especially if the guy strikes out 90+ times. These are for fun no doubt, but I promise I've kept realism in mind. I wouldn't do this any other way

That's fascinating stuff. I love hearing the behind the scenes of this rosters. I'm going to be using 1998 and going forward personally.

Re: The Official 1996, 1997, and 1998 Roster Project

        Quick update on the update.

The new/missing draftees I found add some new options that need deciding on. Here's the deal:

Guys like Mulder and Zito who were drafted by a team, didn't play that exact year like most, but played the next year with current or other club will make the roster on a team. (Mulder with A's, Zito with Rangers)

Other guys who were drafted but didn't sign until later or were re-drafted later after opting for college like Mark Teixeira will be added to the free agents pool. 17 year old (18 in game) Nyjer Morgan will join him there as well as others.

I've also been torn on foreign free agents since some will be rated good but didn't play until the early or mid 2000's. Their addition could compromise true MLB statistical and inaccuracy fallacies but what the hell. This whole set is stretching roster additions by a small amount in a few spots anyway so why not go big.

Right now Ichiro and Matsui will be added as free agents too. I won't add a whole lot more, but may do a request if you list a player.

Also, former NFL QB Chad Hutchinson just made this set as a pitcher. He'll probably bring some heat

Went through and changed the contracts for some players for those of you who play Franchise mode.

Guys like Jeter, Bonds, Mo, Cal Jr, Gwynn, etc... have long deals with their club and other big names have 3-5 years with the rest being 1 or none.

Not sure if salary numbers will have a big change on morale or ratings in that mode, but we will find out.

that is most excellent as you could even have Lee on the Nat's (Expos) or Marlins. So where does Zito wind up, Texas or Seattle?

Good point, thanks for your post.

Lee will actually go to the Free Agent pool since,he didn't even play in the minors until 2000 and it was for Montreal.

Zito was drafted in 98, but got re-drafted in 99 by Oakland and played from then on

              What do you guys think?

Stretch it a bit and give Oakland the amazing trio of Hudson, Mulder, and Zito, or just put Zito in the free agent pool?

Edit: I'm putting him on Oakland. That way someone like the Yanks don't sign him right away when you start.

Re: The Official 1996, 1997, and 1998 Roster Project

                  Guys, it's done.

Every single thing is done except the free agents.

There is about 55-60 to add but then that's it.

Guys who were drafted and opted for college and didn't sign or play until years later will be free agents along with foreign players.

Guys drafted in 98 but didn't play until 99 will be members of the AAA team but not make the 40 man.

Guys drafted by a team in 99 or one in 98, but signed with another in 99 and played in 99 will make thr AAA and AA rosters. This is so guys like Barry Zito who were drafted by Texas in 98 and Oakland in 99 (played in 99 for Oak) are with their most known teams when Franchise starts, although they won't make the 40 man so it's not overloaded.

Will keep grinding, everything is in the home stretch.

                      For sure man.

And in 18 now with the Expos and all the new uniforms and updated minor league stadiums these are really going to pop.

One of the nicest "little things" for accuracy in this set is how many guys were just 18 when 1998 rolled around. Very, very few players are 17 and even way fewer (like 2, maybe) are 16.

Anyway, working relentlessly. Will make another update tonight when I'm finished.

Alright boys, I was done last night again but did my final run through and found 16 new players to add, all big names like Fukudome and young man Bobby Jenks! There should be over a 100 players added to the completed project now alone.

Be back soon with the goods
