Masahiro Tanaka is an example of a pitcher who throws more sliders than fastballs.

Corbin throws a lot of sliders also, but he prefers starting at-bats with his fastball, the slider is his primary out pitch.

In order to improve the gameplay experience, this year, I changed the way pitches are ordered. Last year, I only used pitch frequency percentage to order pitches. Last year, Corbin's slider would have been pitch 1.

This year, I went a little deeper and looked at what situations led to these pitches being thrown. For pitch 1, I looked at what pitch is primarily used first in the at-bat. For pitch 2, I looked at which pitch was used the most with two strikes. The rest of the pitches were ordered in the old style: based simply on frequency, more ofteh than not.

So now, pitch order should be looked at this way:
      Pitch 1: primary pitch
      Pitch 2: out pitch/strikeout pitch
      Pitches 3, 4, 5: secondary pitches

Some pitchers, like Tanaka, use the slider primarily both to begin at bats and with two strikes. Those types of pitchers will have the slider or breaking ball as their primary pitch. Strikeout pitchers like Corbin used the slider so much because they often found themselves in two-strike counts.

      It's all about context
Interesting..I haven't been tracking CPU pitch tendencies in game. Is the CPU using the pitches as you have ordered them and in the same counts? For example, will Corbin (CPU) go to slider more often with 2 strikes or go to 1st pitch?

Yes, they've been using the pitches in this order

With two strikes, the CPU loves to use the first two pitches in its arsenal. Unless his slider is getting hit hard, he will use it with two strikes.

The TrueSim Roster has full re-rates, position updates, and improved depth charts for MLB players and adjusted ratings for prospects.

CRP will use the default ratings from SCEA (as far as I'm aware) for MLB players.

Do you make updates for guys that appear to have taken significant leaps over what their past performance would equal? IE Breakouts... Examples off the top of my head: Matthew Boyd, Caleb Smith, Hunter Dozier... Advanced stats suggest their current performance may not just be a hot streak but the start to a legitimate all star season.

Not usually, but if they've had at least 100 PAs/25 IP, I will consider it.

The game values (maybe even overvalues) speed and defense for SSs, so even though he isn't a very good hitter, he is still an 83 (roughly 80-86 range in franchise, depending on morale) OVR.

The potential curve is as follows (Potential = OVR + modifier):

Some reading that drove the numbers:

An interesting question that has been explored over the years is learning when players peak.  That is, at what age does a baseball player achieve peak performance?  By googling this question, I fou…

                            So, back to Ahmed:
Ahmed is set up for a peak season. He may peak this year. He may not. He may regress. A 99 potential (which can decrease in game), allows him to either peak or have a steady major league career into his 30s as a starter or bench option, depending on performance.
Hey super excited for these. Quick question on how you do Franchise mode. Do you re-rate players potential every new year of the franchise based on these? If so do you factor in potential movements at all?

Just worked 25 of 26 days. Finally have some free time over the next few days to enjoy the game. Have to rerate my CAPs to be inline with this rating guideline. Can't wait to get going.

You could re-do potentials at the beginning of every franchise year, but you certainly don't have to

I won't be doing that, way too hardcore.

I hadn't even considered that possibility until your post.
