Re: Armor & Sword & Marino’s MLB The Show 18 Classic/Directional Simulation Sliders

I can provide further proof of the extreme variance you can get in this game. I'll preface by saying I've used Armors sliders since day 1 with the exception of pitch speed. My franchise team this year is the Twins and holy s*** has my season turned. I started 12-4, led by solid offensive output, a stable bullpen and iffy starting pitching. I then went through a stretch of the backend of my pen struggling to finish games and I was at 19-13. Since then, I have moved Lynn, and called up Fernando Romero. My starting pitching in my recent stretch has been pretty rock solid, a shaky start here or there but much improved. Berrios is emerging as the ace. Meanwhile my pen overall remains solid, but the backend is a dumpster fire. I lead the league in blown saves, Reed, rodney and pressly have all gotten tries in the 9th but they all seem to take a dump when asked to close. I'd hate to try hildenberger since I value his middle/later relief role and situational circumstances to force double plays. Needless to say, acquiring a closer on the market might be the way I have to go. The real big problem recently is the offense. Multiple guys are slumping hard and I'm watching my numbers steadily decline. My strikeouts have increased, homer rate decreased and my ability to hit with runners in scoring position has been horrid. I am now 20-21. I've seen Sanos average go from the .320's to the .270's in this stretch, Doziers avg has fallen about 20 points. Rosario is the only position player on the roster who hasn't caught the cold stretch. He's maintaining a .290 ish .340 ish line. You know it's bad when I had a game recently I drew 8 walks and still only could muster 5 runs and like 7 hits which btw, is an outburst in this stretch I'm on right now. Naturally I thought I'd break my losing streak that game but Pineda got hurt 1/3 of an inning in and then tayron guerrero made it 2 inn before he got hurt so I exhausted my entire pen just to try and get through 9 and just couldn't make it all the way before the Angel's tied it in the 9th and had to go to extras with no more pen arms available. (Seriously, the baseball gods hate me). Hopefully the tides turn and some snap out of this funk soon. With only 10 divisional games played through 41 games, (7-3) I'm hoping when I finally get more consistent division games it will help. Detroit and kc aren't world beaters and I'm 6-2 against the sox.
So with all that being said, there is my update thus far. it is absolutely true the peaks and valleys are real except mine isn't like the great valley, it's the Grand Canyon. I'll update down the road. Meanwhile I'll continue to follow along on some of the other franchises in here. Watching Armors Yankess play offense lately is making me jealous.

And believe me I love stat's as much as the next guy.....but if you are going to have human/user input it will never be where you think. It will just play out they way it will. And most of the time it is good enough for me. I have already accepted that I will never lead the league in strikeouts (hitting), I will always seem to be one of the teams that hits into more DP's, I will always be one of the pitching staff's that seems to walk the fewest guys. Whatever. I am having far too much fun to chase stats and sacrifice my fun and my great gameplay and variety. This game is golden near and at default on all the sliders. Trust me. It is.

I am one of the few it seems that has simply been playing, and playing and playing and not questioning anything too much. The ebb's and flow of an MLB season are crazy. I know baseball...and I know expect the unexpected.

If you get too caught up with the statistical side and forget...."Am I having a great time and enjoying the game" you will never be happy.

Just play the game. Trust the settings and again....if you are not playing every game and are a play one sim 5 guy....you will never, ever get the full experience of the hit variety, pitching streaks, hitting streaks, injuries, errors etc etc.

      Simply won't happen.

This game demands you play 100-120 games at least to really see, feel and experience the marathon that is an MLB baseball season.

I just want you to know......I am good with the game and good with some stats not being as close to real life.....because after playing sports video games for the last 38 years......I am looking for the experience and gameplay first and foremost and for the game to play as close to real life.....the statistics are a by product and most of the time they are pretty damn close.....but sometimes I will have outlier stats...and with The Show.....the legacy stats that seem to always be “off” are issuing walks to the CPU, striking out vs the CPU and hitting into DP’s more than the CPU. But that’s my take. Some like to pursue the statistical nirvana.

          I simply don’t care to.
I understand and you are right in that text things can seem sarcastic/sharp when they weren't meant to be. I hope i never have came across like that either.

Its funny how we all have such different experiences playing the Show. From guys like the one below who is "hanging up his cleats" to others who would, like i said, love the game if it literally turned into Baseball Stars.

I for one always wonder about the "legacy" issues you refer to. I have heard others here mention that as well. There are some legacy issues that i experience, (mostly in the field) but they aren't those three things.

          (*Nerd Alert...lol*)
My human strikeout rate is 9.45 per game over two franchises with the same team . (After almost 100 games, i started thinking about the idea of adjusting something because over one K an inning gets frustrating. Then i got curious and looked at my teams real MLB stats and they are striking out 9.7 times per game, so I left it as-is.) That is a ton of strikeouts. So i wouldn't call that a legacy issue. Strikeouts can be very realistic in this game. (I also have a another franchise where I play with every single team, and my human K rate in over 100 games is consistently around 8.15, which is close to MLB average).

My GIDP rate in all of those games combined is .67 per game. MLB is around .77 per game. (One of my franchises has it exactly .77, while the other is at .57 per game)

When pitching, my BB/9 is 2.7 per 9. Slightly below the real Rangers 2.9. I have walked 12 batters in this current series (3 games), while striking out 27 batters. I just throw less than half of my pitches in the strike zone. If i threw too many in the strike zone i wouldn't get many walks either.

To call these a legacy issue or 'statistical nirvana' would be a misnomer. Maybe its a Directional legacy issue, or a Classic Pitching legacy issue, Interface legacy issue, or difficulty level issue, but it is not an entire game legacy issue.

Its simply comes down to the different ways we all want to approach the game. You, understandably, enjoy the game for what it is because you don't enjoy tweaking sliders. You would rather plug and play. I totally understand that. I really do. I actually think that is a great way to play this game. I am exactly the same way when it comes to other sports titles. (I use your Madden sliders and love them - so thank you for that) I wouldn't test and play around with baseball sliders after release either if i didn't enjoy it. Fortunately it is also very rewarding for me. (For what its worth, i have kept more sliders at default this year than any other year. The game is that good. No chasing necessary)

If i slider-chased and stat-chased or nirvana chased after i started my franchise i would end up hating the game (hanging up my cleats), or just give in and play as-is (more likely). That would be no fun and would ruin the entire experience. I feel for those who have experienced this because i know some that have. I am as dogmatic as you in letting it play out until something rears its ugly head after 80 games or more.

I really hope this comes across as an actual discussion and not an argument. I love that this game was so well developed that so many different play-styles can enjoy this game. I have always enjoyed this thread and i have benefited from it. I have read this thread for a few years, although i used to mainly lurk. I have thought about asking about these items before, but was hesitant that it would be taken the wrong way by some people.

At any rate, i really appreciate the work and presence you have in these forums. As well as making this game (and Madden) enjoyable to so many people, who would otherwise give up on it.

Good question. Personally I don't see any problem if it's a thread in the sliders section since you're using Armor's sliders. Maybe others and/or moderators can have a better shot at it.

Armor, how often do you use the left stick when hitting? Is it on batters count and runners in scoring position situations. On last years game I would mainly just press X unless I was in a favourable count with a power hitter.

So I have reached the final month of the season in my Braves franchise. I trail the nationals by.5 game with a 73-61 record. The Braves had a terrible offensive month in August falling out of the top spot on team batting average. We went from 283 to 272 in the month. The pitching staff also struggled. We finished the month with 13-13 record. I'm hoping for a great month so the Braves can dethrone the nationals as nl east champs. Let's go braves.

Just hit the draft in season 1 of my Braves franchise. Have hit hard times with just not being able to produce offense in the month of May/early June and my pitching just can't seem to quite get it done.

However, the draft IMO went extremely well. I think I might have gotten some of the most MLB ready players available in all of the draft.

Same situation for me. My season has actually almost mirrored some of the RL Yankees season perfectly (or not depending on how you look at it lol). Beginning of the season Judge and Stanton couldn’t hit water if they fell out of a boat, in fact Judge didn’t hit a home run or have an RBI until around the 15th game of the season, and Gregorious couldn’t make an out. Now over my last 10-15 games things have reversed. Judge now leads the team with 7 homers and has I think 16-17 RBIs. Stanton has 6 and leads the team and is 3rd in the league with 24 RBIs. DiDi has seen his average go from about .340 to an abysmal .220. Gleyber Torres has yet to get anything going but Andujar has been consistently around .300 and leads the team with 6 doubles. Pitching has been pretty decent aside from those occasional wtf moments from both my starters and bullpen, including Chapman blowing a save and losing the game by giving up solo homers on consecutive pitches.

My Braveschise, broadcast all games QC, caught up to real season, sitting around .500. Markakis and Suzuki were just not producing, got shipped out to bring Heyward back to RF in ATLANTA. So my lineup:

                                Flowers
                                Freeman
                                Albies
                                Swanson
                                Carmargo
                                Acuna Jr
                                Incairte
                                Heyward

Nationals have 13.5 lead in NL East, but I'm only 4.5 out of wild card chase. , Freeman killing it as in real life.

I use Armor OP, with following changes: I use quick counts, pitch speeds I have at 9/10.
