Too bad, I heard a lot of people talking about how good it was last year when it was released. It probably got written off b/c it was a Gamecube only release and the Cube wasn't getting much love by the magazines then.

Most people, mags and sites wrote it off because Sega (poorly) chose to market it as an arcade game. That combined with how bad WSB2K1 (same engine) was received dug an early grave for Home Run King.

It ended up being more sim-like than some of the sim labeled games, believe it or not. The only thing I didn't care for about it was the camera after the ball was put in play. It went to almost an overhead view, and it made the ball look really slow and floaty. It was a solid game other than that, though.

If the gameplay is right, I can live with little things like that. Was the 2k1 engine bad?

Yeah it is indeed a shame, I would never have picked this game up either if my cousin didnt have a gamecube and it was on sale at Best Buy for $19!!

Man I always loved the WSB 2K1 Batter/Pitcher interface in that game...it was so realistic and challenging and yet was still fun to pitch and hit. If it wasnt for the quirky over panning and rotating of the cameras in the field, manualess fielding, and some baseball fundamental issues, this would have been one of my favorites of all time. Well needless to say, Sega fixed alot of those issues with HomeRun King and put out a very solid title ( give or take a few annoyances ) But they retained the great batter/pitcher interface of WSB 2K1 while adding and fixing some of the things that were wrong with the dreamcast version. In my eyes, I actually felt WSB 2K2 took a step backwards when they used the new team and I was really hoping they could have used that Japanese company to do the WSB on the XBOX....but who knows, maybe this year WSB will actually be realistic and gritty approach to baseball rather than just one big ESPN Highlight Reel game.

Dick said everything just about perfectly above about WSB2K1. The engine definitely had promise.

Jordan, I think the WSB 2K1 engine was very very good....the problem was the gameplay engine never really felt finished. Its almost as if the developers spent so much time trying to create the most realistic batter / pitcher interface that they seemed to have left the rest of the gameplay unfinished and untweaked once the ball was put in play. The game instantly recieved most of its slack for not having any type of manual fielding, which is a big no no in a video game. But there were gameplay imbalances as well.......Apparently HomeRun King is essentially a finished WSB2k1 which came out very nice....and I agree about the questionable rotating cameras that follow the trail of the ball in such a way that give it a floaty feel. But the feeling of trying to connect with a fastball on the Hardest level is truely a realistic yet enjoyable feeling. Plus getting good wood on the ball feels nice and is very rewarding. Also pitching is handled extremely realistically. Allowing you to put your movement and location on the pitch at the last possible second right before the release which simulates very well the feeling of actually trying to pitch effectively with good placement without getting too wild.

Excellent Batter/Pitcher interface....excellent. High Heat nor WSB could touch this in terms of realism...ASB was the only game that came close but still not as enjoyable and effective as HomeRun King's.
