Jordan, I think the WSB 2K1 engine was very very good....the problem was the gameplay engine never really felt finished. Its almost as if the developers spent so much time trying to create the most realistic batter / pitcher interface that they seemed to have left the rest of the gameplay unfinished and untweaked once the ball was put in play. The game instantly recieved most of its slack for not having any type of manual fielding, which is a big no no in a video game. But there were gameplay imbalances as well.......Apparently HomeRun King is essentially a finished WSB2k1 which came out very nice....and I agree about the questionable rotating cameras that follow the trail of the ball in such a way that give it a floaty feel. But the feeling of trying to connect with a fastball on the Hardest level is truely a realistic yet enjoyable feeling. Plus getting good wood on the ball feels nice and is very rewarding. Also pitching is handled extremely realistically. Allowing you to put your movement and location on the pitch at the last possible second right before the release which simulates very well the feeling of actually trying to pitch effectively with good placement without getting too wild.

Excellent Batter/Pitcher interface....excellent. High Heat nor WSB could touch this in terms of realism...ASB was the only game that came close but still not as enjoyable and effective as HomeRun King's.

It got cr*pped on alot but WSB2K1 was a very fun game. Like you guys mentioned, the Batting/Pitching interface was very realistic and the best that I have ever played with since. Of course, not being able to control fielders killed WSB2k1 for many but the gameplay was solid in that game.

I think Sega has done a good job with their baseball games. The Genesis World Series games were incredible IMO!

As I expressed with FatPitcher ( WSB programmer? ) many times last year, the games graphics were a delight and the concept of coaches and managers was indeed fun for franchise play but I just felt the game was lacking any real gameplay and AI depth. You could basically take startting pitchers into extra innings without any ramifications, the game never forced you to utilize your bullpen and think about key matchups. Errors were almost non existent. Players threwe perfectly to the appropriate bases. I felt the gameplay was just a big display of pizzaz with players constantly fielding grounders on the run and tossing over to first in stride. I really wanted to enjoy this game but it just did not feel like a very deep baseball game. I actually enjoyed ASB more last year and felt it did a better job at capturing the feel of real baseball along with all of it's oddities and little things. ASB still was far from perfect with some very annoying glitches and a very dulled down atmosphere with the absence of umpire sounds and very interactive crowds, ect but I still felt the challenge of trying to pitch around a CPU hitter was much more challenging and hitting was indeed more rewarding ( except for the easy fat pitch homers with the power swing enabled )

Hopefully this year, ALL the games have raised the bar immensely and have finally figured out that 'most' baseball fans want solid, challenging gameplay that forces the player to think as well as react , mixed in with variety on the field that captures alot more of the situations you see in the real sport .....At least I know thats what I'm looking for.
