Re: WOW...I almost FORGOT why I LOVED ASB so much...

Its interesting to see this post. I did the same thing, although I rented it as I bought WS last year. I rented it because of the high praise it has been getting namely in GI. I was really fond of the create team and franchise mode. So today I popped it in and what I noticed was that on managerial mode, you can not select a steal. Does anyone know if this has been remedied. It may have been posted and if so forgive me but the info is a little hard to keep track of and keep from blending with other games. I was a little discoureaged to see it was a 20 season mode. I suspect if they fix the little things such as the stealing from last year the only deal breaker would be the 20 seasons. Also, does anyone happen to know if there will be a greater variety of face types in create a player? It makes little sense to scan all those faces then have all the new/created players look the same. I have to say Im really intriqued by the stadiums and I think its likely I will get ASB then if rent WS and if I like WS better Ill trade ASB in.

    BDoughty--
It seems to me that there was a list at one time which was a sticky that had the expected features for the variety of games coming out. Would this have been deleted or between pages 42 and 127? If you or anyone could find this I think a lot of people would appreciate it and it may prevent duplicated and unnecessary threads.

Motown, I know exactly what you mean by the LH timing physics glitch....I made a big issue of it on the forum last year...Hopefully the ASB team has taken notice of this and remedied it in this years version. I can also sympothize with people who may have been turned off initially with ASB because of it's difficult batting system which requires a bit of patience and practice but I hope they truly dont 'dumb' the game down to make it too easy to hit like with all of the other titles. One of the fun aspects for ASB is how challenging it is to get good wood on the ball. If anything, I just hope they address this by just giving more options for the causal baseball fan to make hitting more 'customizable' for newbies WITHOUT actually removing the challenge for those of us that enjoyed the challenge at the harder levels.

ASB was a game that takes a little while to let the depth of the game grow on you to see it's depth and brilliance wheras the other titles start off with a bigger initial bang and wow factor but then start to taper off when you start to see it's repetive linear gameplay....that's why ASB had a much longer play life for me while the other titles started collecting shelf space once I started seeing how randomized everything felt. My biggest problem with HH was the fact that it was almost a purely statistical driven game that didnt really allow the actual physics and player input to determine results as much as the other titles. I prefer to have a bit more user influence in gameplay results with my baseball video games. For statistics, I enjoy OOTP baseball to fill that craving.

DS, I think you were right about the intimidation of facing good pitchers -- that was the thing I liked the most about ASB 2003. I made it to the playoffs with the Cubs and had to square off against the D-Backs in round 1. They absolutely crushed me because of Schilling and Johnson. Johnson's slider and Schilling's splitter were too much for me to handle, and the CPU even switched up the rotation so that Schilling started game 4, too.

                      Jake,

To steal in "manage only" mode, just use the exact same d-pad/y-button combo you use when playing. When the runner's on first, push the d-pad to the right, and the y-button, and your guy will take off with the pitch.

There is a lot of ASB hating. I guess everyone just has their little things that bug them about that game. There are soooo many great features, but for me it was that damn batting physics engine, and the cameras. I need a "blimp" like camera for fielding. Its just too hard to judge batted balls from a reflex standpoint. I noticed the camera does seem to be a little higher up this year. A step in the right direction for me.

ASB did a lot of little things right...and that is the power of this game. It appeals to the people who played ball at a higher level or those who want to enjoy alot of the nuances a real game has to offer.

It is not for the "hurry up and let's play as fast as we can" crowd. My son is like that with all games...he resets so that the next pitch/play/faceoff/in bounds pass/etc... happens instantaneously. He misses all the cut scenes and ambiance of all the games. Not that you should watch everything as it plays out, but I like to take a breather for a few seconds at times!

Not saying that is wrong...but some games have some really neat stuff between the gameplay...ASB being one.

ASB is a great game. WSB may catch up this year, but that should not diminish what ASB has accomplished.
