I totally agree that WSB 2k3 is a really googd game. It would be the best if it had accurate batting and pitching stances and their faces with accurate body models= baseball heaven !!!!!

Re: What is the Best Baseball game for the Xbox

As a one player game, I'd clearly go with ASB04.

First, the statistical accuracy (which is most important to me) was right on. My best batter batted .316 with 38HR’s. My best starting pitcher went 19-9; K’d 234 batters, & had an ERA of 3.34. My team won 92 games & JUST missed out on the playoffs. I had to Handicap (for lack of a better word) myself a bit by lowering my pitchers stamina to D, but all my team & individual stats were right on.

Next, the little (yet large) details in this game were almost mind boggling at times. Is my starting pitcher wearing a team jacket while running around the bases? Did Wrigley fan really toss a visiting HR ball back onto the field? Did I actually see John Rocked sprint to the mound after being summoned from the bull pen? Sasaki, bowing to the crowd after notching a save? Do I hear trains at Safco?I could go on & on… I think that “listening to” / watching a HR ball die up against a foul pole & fall directly onto the field was my favorite little feature overall. The collision detection in this game was well done!

Also, when first buying & comparing player models & batting stances with any baseball game, I almost always check out & compare Vaughn, Ichiro, Sheffield, Batista, & Counsell right away. All of them looked close enough to the real thing for me. Other than Mussina’s odd “in the stretch” delivery missing… I was very pleased overall. I just don’t get how people bag on the stadiums in ASB04, also… They were VERY detailed IMO.

Don’t get me wrong here as I’m not trying to re-open the never ending battle of which is the best baseball game of the year. All of the other baseball games were very good for different reasons. WSB03's gamplay was solid. Both WSB03 & MVP had a behind the pitcher camera view which ASBB04 lacked (which was my biggest complaint w/ ASB04), MVP had nice post-HR scenes for EVERY stadium (the rising apple at Shea, the train at Enron, the dude on the slide in Milwaukee), & it’s still hard to compare ANY stat engine to High Heat…

All in all, I think that ASB04 / X-Box is the best “All around” baseball out there. With an addition of the behind to pitcher cam, a tweak to the base running (as I’d like to score from 2nd on a base hit more frequently), & maybe a few more injuries… ASB “05” will be very tough to beat! I can see it now, Gagne coming out of the bull pen with Dodger stadium flashing GAME OVER!

Last, Stave Lyons may have gotten old at times but it’s a very long 162-game season… What do you expect? The time Acclaim put into this aspect of their game amazed me. Vacuum catches? Players hunch after making plays? Who cares! Why this game doesn’t get more love is beyond me…

      Thanks…

yeah, but the little things is what distract you from the game. first off, ASB 04 is a great game but its too long. I reallly dont like to put make the gameplay faster b/c everybody ends up like speedy gonzalez when coming to the plate so i change it to normal and its still like last year with its slow gameplay.

Then the batting system with the cursor doesn't feel like real baseball, MVP did a great job with its batting system and they should make it like that.

The pitching and batting stances look generic and should make them more real. in terms of player accuracy in the types of player models should be little upgraded b/c IMO all of the players look kind of chuby. Theey should also upgrade the stadium details and copy it from inside pitch 2k3 with animated scoreboards and stuff.

But all in all, ASB 04 is a great game IMO, but still needs a little more work for ' 05, and ill be tough to beat.

I really don't understand why ASB gets so much love. I agree, that the collision detection, look of the game, exteas (bullpen warmups, pitchers wearing jackets, etc.) are awesome and should be standard in all games in the future. My problem was the gameplay, and not because I thought it was too difficult. Everytime the catcher attempts a snap throw, and the runner doesn't move, he's not called out. Pitching had too much accuracy, so walks weren't a factor when pitching. When batting, you could walk a lot. Fielding is frustrating. Balls were hit too much to center field and not enough grondballs. I curious, why don't ASB fans find these things annoying?

in ASB, it looks like there's an overcast no matter what the time of day or weather forecast. Very gloomy and unappealing.

in ASB, it looks like there's an overcast no matter what the time of day or weather forecast. Very gloomy and unappealing.

It's funny; I've enjoyed all the baseball games this year to some extent. But, this is how I'd rate them:

                              1. ASB 2004 - This is the most detail-oriented game I've ever played. It really is amazing just how much detail is in this thing! The gameplay is a little "loose". You sometimes feel the play or sequence of plays is scripted (i.e. lazy fly balls to center; tons of them). But, after a few innings, you really start concentrating on the game and you realize "Hey, this feels like baseball!" So, for that reason, I rank it #1. Franchise mode in this game is the absolute best. No one comes close. Period. Simmed stats are damn near spot on. Very impressed.

                              2. High Heat Baseball - Still plays the best game of baseball IMO, if you have the sliders adjusted well. Default pitch speeds are too slow (I cranked them all the way up). The mistake, I think, the dearly departed 3DO made with this game is they almost tried to de-simulate it, at least out of the package. Tweak some of the settings and it still plays mean, though. The graphics are bland, but they're not terrible. Pitcher-batter is still the best out there. I just hope Microsoft lets this code alone!! And, the stat engine is very tight. Franchise mode is good, but not outstanding. Menus suck.

                              3. MVP Baseball - Fun! Fun! Fun! Too many flaws to keep me seriously interested for a long time, but it is a fun game with some cool features. Graphics decent, sound is excellent. Good organ music!! Why do so many b-ball games have problems with organ music?

                              4. WSB 2k3 - First off, I'm a HUGE Sega fan. But, this game just doesn't do it for me. The graphics are beautiful, but the animations aren't. The players are scaled too large for the field. The physics are so-so. The crack of the bat sounds strange. The announcing bores me. Why Ted Robinson? Really, Sega. I hope ESPN 2k4 gets Jon Miller and Joe Morgan. Cursor batting just isn't right IMHO, BUT WSB has the best cursor batting. And, I do better on very small cursor and no aids. So, I dunno. After 20 games or so, I get bored with it and go back to ASB or HH.

Hope this wasn't too long, but I'm passionate about baseball. Hope this helps!
