Re: What is the Best Baseball game for the Xbox

It's funny; I've enjoyed all the baseball games this year to some extent. But, this is how I'd rate them:

    1. ASB 2004 - This is the most detail-oriented game I've ever played. It really is amazing just how much detail is in this thing! The gameplay is a little "loose". You sometimes feel the play or sequence of plays is scripted (i.e. lazy fly balls to center; tons of them). But, after a few innings, you really start concentrating on the game and you realize "Hey, this feels like baseball!" So, for that reason, I rank it #1. Franchise mode in this game is the absolute best. No one comes close. Period. Simmed stats are damn near spot on. Very impressed.

    2. High Heat Baseball - Still plays the best game of baseball IMO, if you have the sliders adjusted well. Default pitch speeds are too slow (I cranked them all the way up). The mistake, I think, the dearly departed 3DO made with this game is they almost tried to de-simulate it, at least out of the package. Tweak some of the settings and it still plays mean, though. The graphics are bland, but they're not terrible. Pitcher-batter is still the best out there. I just hope Microsoft lets this code alone!! And, the stat engine is very tight. Franchise mode is good, but not outstanding. Menus suck.

    3. MVP Baseball - Fun! Fun! Fun! Too many flaws to keep me seriously interested for a long time, but it is a fun game with some cool features. Graphics decent, sound is excellent. Good organ music!! Why do so many b-ball games have problems with organ music?

    4. WSB 2k3 - First off, I'm a HUGE Sega fan. But, this game just doesn't do it for me. The graphics are beautiful, but the animations aren't. The players are scaled too large for the field. The physics are so-so. The crack of the bat sounds strange. The announcing bores me. Why Ted Robinson? Really, Sega. I hope ESPN 2k4 gets Jon Miller and Joe Morgan. Cursor batting just isn't right IMHO, BUT WSB has the best cursor batting. And, I do better on very small cursor and no aids. So, I dunno. After 20 games or so, I get bored with it and go back to ASB or HH.

Hope this wasn't too long, but I'm passionate about baseball. Hope this helps!

World Series was my personal fave. Simply felt it has come closest to the "full package" High Heat would be second simply because I like realistic games and it was very realistc. MVP was solid if a little shallow. I also hated the fact you could not control the diving and jumping.

      As for AllStar....
To be honest I've never played it. I read some reviews that were decent, but not great and by the time I was going to rent it I was sick of baseball due to playing the heck out of the other three. After seeing the love it's getting on here might have to go out and rent it.

I'd probably agree that WSB does give you the better "overall package". Nice graphics, some ESPN flair, good franchise mode, decent gameplay, etc. It just doesn't seem to reach out and "draw me in" like I thought it would, though.

I don't dislike the game. In fact, I still own it and do play it once in a while.

But, ASB 2004 just drew me in to the whole "This is baseball" thing. It's not a game that's easy to pick up and play. It's an acquired taste. The nice thing is is that while I don't like cursor batting, on ASB I use zone batting, which works very well IMO. I don't like timed hitting in ASB or WSB because it seems almost exclusively stat driven with little user input. Zone still gives you input on where to put your bat without moving that damn cursor around.

You ought to give it a try. Get it pre-owned and really play it awhile. Start on rookie, if need be. Don't go higher than veteran if you've never played or you'll get frustrated quickly.

my favorite the last 2 years has been WSB.
let me tell you this; I tried to play WSB again after playing Inside Pitch the last 3 months, and WSB hitting and ball physics looked like crap!
If you play I.P. long enough you will get the feel of how fun and good this game is and can be in the future!
Since Microsoft bought HH i PRAY I.P. will be out next year!
If Microsoft would just clean up game and add more features, the game would crush all others!

EXACTLY. The reason I disliked WSB2k3 so much this year was because I had played MVP baseball for a month prior to purchasing it. Now that I've been playing WSB2k3 for several weeks without playing MVP, I've gotten used to the poor ball physics, idiotic animations, and sad fastball pitch movement in WSB2k3. Once you get past those issues, WSB2k3 is a good game.
