    What makes 2k more fun?

Or is it just a mirage? I've heard quite a few people say they play 2k because it's just more fun. I'm one of them. Fun is obviously subjective but to be honest I've played both games for years and I find it more fun even though it has some massive inconsistencies. I'm glad there will be a 2k13 for these reasons.

    1. Controls feel looser and like you have more control over the action. In reality i don't think you do, but something about the game feels loose which gives it a more fun feeling. I think this goes for batting, pitching and fielding. There is something about 2k games and their control that just feels fun. I don't know how to explain it other than that. Really like the swing types and it all seems to make sense though.

    2. Pitching gives you more to do. It also gives you more to do while feeling instinctive and it doesn't take your eye off the plate. I think the analog pitching in 2k is the best in class and makes you feel like you are throwing the pitch. I also think particularly in 2k12 compared to past versions there is enough variety as far as how you hit your gesture and where the pitch actually goes which adds a lot of variety to the pitching. This is one area where I think 2k could actually do more though as far as passed balls and hitting batters etc. Make it even more difficult at times.

    3. I think the commentary and soundtrack really add to the atmosphere of 2k12. The music choices are good. The commentary and announcers just sound like you are at the ballgame.

    4. I actually am someone who likes the art style of 2k12. It just looks extremely rough in spots. But i've always liked a more cartooney look to my sports games. The game can look really cool at times this is more a pro/con. Other times the games looks ugly.

    5. Stat overlays and inside edge are relavent and bring you deeper into the game. PLayer ratings and trade logic seem to be smart in this game. Games also seem to play out realistically as far as boxscores. If baseball was a numbers game which it is this game holds it own and even surpasses the competition. Sometimes I wish 2k would delve even deeper into what players do and their tendencies in situations but overall the system itself seems very solid.

    What holds 2k back

    1. There need to be more animations in between play and just in general. Too often players don't animate correctly or at all which really takes you out of the game. There is a lack of personality to the game which is disapointing because on the surface this game looks like a game that would have a lot of that even with it's quirks. I've learned to just hit A to advance the action which solves some of the issues but there are still too many issues as far as when i'd expect a player to animate or celebrate and when they actually do. 2k has had robot players in the past. They've also had some of the best animations around. What's disapointing to me is the lack of animations in general in the field. Pitchers, fielders, batters all still feel pretty static. I see the same animations over and over or none at all.

    2. Players slow down and speed up unrealistically in the field and at the plate. There is a herky jerky feeling to the game in general which really takes you out of the game. Often fielders won't react in time. There is a lack of balance and variety particularly in the field.

    3. Crowds feel dead at times. Other times have some personality but crowds in general are very inconsistant.

    4. Camera's can be pretty static and don't really show off the stadiums like they could. Where the show kind of pans around the stadium in between plays 2k kind of sticks with the same camera angles. I'd like more variety this year. The camera angles that are there are excellent. I just want more.

    5. Attention to detail. Crowds jump for fly balls unrealistically. Balls can go through parts of the stadium etc... Too much here to list.

I think overall 2k could have a very good baseball game and compete but there are too many inconsistencies with this game right now to really put it in that class. Is the game more fun in spots? I think so. I'm not someone who needs the best graphics around. I would like 2k to add more variety though and clean up some of the herky jerkyness to the game.

Most years I think this game is just passable. Probably in that 6.5 to 7 range but something keeps me coming back. Something about the controls and feeling of the game. These are more just general observations but what do you think? I'd be interested to know why people keep coming back to this game. It seems to be people who have an opportunity to play the Show but just choose this game. Why do we do that?

It easier to hit. That would probably make it more fun to some people..

Yea, I guess the gesture pitching would seem more fun to some people as well.

      1. Batting doesn't take cat-like reflex, the vision of a fighter pilot and the patience of a Buddhist monk to be baseball. In the sports world they call that combination Barry Bonds.

      2. The player card.

      3. Defensive specific ratings. This is huge when it comes to building a team. Say you want to play someone out of position, well if you stick someone like Braun at third it may be possible, but don't think every LF can do it. Check...he might be able to play every where.

      4. Ratings.

      5. Stats. Stats. Stats.

      6. Pitching is actually engaging.

      7. It doesn't take itself too seriously.

I'm amazed at how many people consider that a detriment. This game you can take out of the box, turn it on and within a couple minutes you know a strike from a ball. This is something I was never able to do on MLB the Show.

One thing other than what has been mentioned already is the batters eye (the text message one). You don't have to use it if you don't want but it's a nice option, something that could or should be in the other game. Some say it's cheating but I have it set fairly low so it only comes on occasionally and think of it as a batters ability to read a pitch.

The game also seems to move along at a faster pace when hitting the A button.

Re: What makes 2k more fun?

Pitching and hitting are what 2k does right, especially the pitching aspect of the series over the last couple of years. Hitting is just right, they headed in the right direction with the 2k11 patch and nailed it with 2k12. Commentary is also very good for a sports video game. Throw meter is also a plus.

Too much slowdown on foul balls, the graphics are barely on the PS2/Xbox level. Crowds are lifeless and animations are horrible. Too many instances of "did that really just happen" moments in 2k baseball. Such as: players scoring from 2nd base on an infield ground ball because the first baseman throw to the plate animation is slow to get started, outfielders throwing up their gloves on fly balls when they obviously should be running in or out to make a fairly easy catch -- which results in a double or triple with a speedy runner.

Online: base steal glitch where players (when timed right) can get their opponent to pitch the ball over the catcher's head. Check-swing is non existent. Base running animations and rundown animations are horrible, resulting in too many "safe" runners. Although not as prevalent as before, there are still stall tactics used online - which need to be done away with. Pitchers need to be announced in a screen BEFORE choosing your lineup for the game. Starting pitchers should not be allowed in gameplay until ALL relief pitchers are used. There should be a power penalty for pre-loading your batter's swing, it's just not realistic.

I agree. Whether is it is speed, more simple animations, or something else, I read ball/strikes as well as i did when I played baseball through high school. I think like I did when I hit. I enjoy hitting in 2K so much more than in any other game.

Overall, the OP nails exactly how I feel about 2K, including the looks of the game. I like the style, too. I liked the more cartoony feel of 2K football, too, even though t had just as many fugly moments. I mean they raided The Walking Dead for referees in that game.

I will also say that I find fielding in 2K12 to be near perfect. Maybe it is my slider set, but I feel like i have way more control over how a play turns out. on a slow roller, I will be pre-loading that throw, which dramatically increases the chance of a bad throw. On a hot shot, I will wait until my fielder settles and fire it over.

I think too many people that complain about pauses and such in fielding, are trying to force everything too quick. I feel like turn double plays I should, and come up late when I should.

When I started playing games as many other teams, the large variance in defensive ratings really started to show through. You get used to what your guys do, but when going from team to team, the differences are much more noticeable.

This goes double for pitching, as it is the first game to utilize a LARGE spread in ratings for each pitch. I can't emphasize how much better this makes pitching.

The other thing I think 2K12 nailed was pitcher fatigue and how that forces you to manage your bullpen over the course of a season. Using pitch counts (which are more realistic than any other game) make so much sense.

Fielder fatigue works, but most importantly, you really do need to plan on using your back-up catcher. God I wish EA would use this system to force back-up goalies into games.

I had my doubts when it was announced, but dynamic ratings work. Their effect is not dramatic, but it is effective. You can go with a hat bat, and still see him fail. It doesn't jack with the simulation at all, which is what I feared.

As for Planche's online complaints, oh well. find a good group to play with and there is no better online baseball game to play. It's not even close. If you play randoms, in any franchise of any sport, you are going to face a ton of BS, and baseball is particularly easy to abuse.

But the online play is so good, that I also found plenty of solid people to play with. Personally, the moment a guy does one glitch type thing, I bail. I don't have an hour to waste on some tool just to protect my quit %.

The only problem I have with online is that this is the first game that really makes reading balls and strikes possible, so many guys don't get that swinging at every pitch is stupid. You would think, when they throw balls and I take them all game, they would understand that they could take pitches in the dirt, too.

The game is far from perfect, and if your first priority is what goes on between pitches, the colors of uniforms, and silky smooth and realistic animations, then it's not for you. But this game screams baseball if strategy, intuitive gameplay, and stats are what you are looking for.

It also helps that I will choose a simple franchise mode that gets me to playing over "deep modes" and their Rule 5 realism that is butchered by an AI so badly that the answer is to play all 30 teams.

If I want realistic sims, which is what you are doing if you are seriously playing more than one season, then I will play OOTP. If I want to play console baseball, 2K12 is more fun than I've had with any other game. That includes High Heat, MVP 05, and even the other game.

Re: What makes 2k more fun?

Nice post Oread. I have issues with my fielders stopping and starting. Maybe it's something i'm doing wrong. But they seem to get locked into animations sometimes. I agree with you though. If I want to play a quick game and just have fun 2k baseball has that going for it. I'm glad they are making a 2k13. I hope they know what people want though. This game could be a classic imo if they ever just knew what people wanted and polished the game up. It's one of those games that is frustrating because of that. It has that dreaded p-word. The show has actually gotten better in recent years and the controls have become more fun imo but games still take too long. It still feels too rigid at times. There aren't enough stats either. If 2k could find that nitch I'd be happy.

Re: What makes 2k more fun?

what makes 2k baseball more fun than any other baseball games i have played is hard to quantify.
its always been a hard thing for me to put a finger on.
But These things do make it enjoyable, and so yes i guess more fun.

the announcing is a great start.
the menus, the crowd sound and lighting.
Those stand out the most to me.
The speed of the game is a biggie too.
                      The crispness.
Pitching in this game is one of my favorite things to do in sports game this gen.

                        2. Mt Oread, I'm 426-91 online, and I don't cheat the game. Overall I have a 74% positive feedback in 2k baseball and the 26% that wasn't positive were angry that they got beat by pure baseball strategy. I gave positives and negatives that I'd like to see fixed. Not complaining, just stating facts. I don't do franchise mode in any sports game - it's just too easy to win. My only mode of gameplay for baseball, football, and hockey is online. Naturally, that's where my main concerns lie. I'm ecstatic that there will be an MLB 2k13, it's a gift none of us expected. But I do hope that they make some minor changes to make the game better.

The Show takes a more realistic approach to batting. Some people prefer it. Some don't.

I didn't mention the other game specifically because I didn't want to start a flamewar or even a comparison with the other game really. Just more wanted to know why people make that comment "I find 2k more fun".

Me personally I think both games are very similar if you really look at them. I'll take a drop in graphics which is basically what it is for some of the other stuff I mentioned. The problems that keep it from getting over the hump are the ones I mentioned though.

I just find it interesting with all it's flaws people actually choose to play 2k and actually say "i find it more fun". I for one do so I can buy this. I don't think people are just on crack. They might be but I tend to think there are reasons. Graphics are only skin deep in ways. If I can take a drop in graphics but have better control I'll take it.
