Re: does asb 05 have manage only mode?

    Jim;
I edited the patience of the better hitters to A or A- the others to B+ and B and the new players coming into the league to B- or C+....plus I think you see it alot less in manage only mode. You still see the occasional way out of the strike zone swing, but to me....not as much. I'm also seeing better average and homerun totals. Also, one added plus is I don't see the bat flying out of the hands scene once a game anymore. I still see it once in a while, but not nearly as much.
I laid down some basic ground rules as far as the GM side of the game, and I am absolutely still love ASB 2005 in manage only mode. I have tried again and again to get into ESPN and MLB, and while I do like both games....I always go back to my ASB in MOM.

        Hey M.K.

Now that's interesting. I didn't think of that tweak. I loaded up ASB on my beautiful 56" t.v. and was awed, again, by the color, beauty of the stadiums, etc. So much so I started a new season after updating all the rosters.

I agree, this game (with our patented tweaks) really plays well. Heck, I've even got running down to a breeze. With the editor it's a game that can last, that's for sure.

Hoping MLB doesn't disappoint me with the roster problems, but I tell you, this game (with our patented tweaks....did I say that?) is super.

I'll try that patience thing. Thanks for the hint. If that helps in MOM then my friend will be very, very interested in this game.

                Sure Spin;
Here are a couple of things both Jim and I have done to make the game a little better and I think realistic. Jim uses a different set of edits(namely with speed) but all in all I think they come out to be about the same results. With edits this game is much better and if you do them a little at a time...it's not overwhelming to do. It sounds like alot, but it goes fast.

First off...I like to use a generated count. It makes the game faster....and it's much more realistic as far as walks. If you go with NO generated count...the walks are few and far between. Now, everyone has a different opinion on which count. Some like smart count, some just a random gen. count, and still other go with a 1-0 or 2-0 count....and some even change it during the game(YES you can do that!) Find one that suits you and use it. I use RANDOM

Second..edit the starting pitchers to have either and A+, A or A- stamina
........then bump up you relievers to have higher stamina according to what it is in the game. Go up a full letter or even a letter and a half. Some people worry that this will make all starters basically the same. IT WON'T don't worry. I have had starters go 2 innings, 5 innings or full games...It all depends on how they are pitching that day. That goes for your pitchers and the opponents.
then.....I edited the pitchers control down a full letter or letter and a half. These guys are too good out of the box and offense is still a little lacking...give them some help! While you are at it raise the pickoff on a couple of pitchers. Make basestealing a little tougher for you.

Third....edit ALL outfielders RANGE down.....WAY down as far as I'm concerned....these guys get to everything. If a guy has an A+ rating....I have him down to B+ or B. There is only a couple of guys in my franchise with an A rating. One is Jim Edmonds. I have Moises Alou at C and I have Sammy Sosa as a C- just to give you an example. Mike Cameron is an A- and Cliff Floyd is a B-. Jeromy Burnitz is a D+. I'm just trying to give you an idea of how I try and rate the guys. You can leave the minor league guys with D's alone for now...but I do up their speed rating.
Now....edit thier arm strength DOWN. Again...don't be afraid to go low. Only the BEST arms should be even NEAR A....NO A+ arms! Don't be afraid to give them D+ if they have weak arms in real life. Edmonds is a C in my franchise. Vlad Guerrero is an A
Now...ACCURACY...another one that needs to go WAY down. I know these sound drastic...but when you finally see a guy tag up from second to third or third to home....you will be smiling. Before the edits....balls in the corner were almost always singles...now they will be doubles.. Guys never tagged up on sac flies to the outfield...now they will. You will still see the occasional ball go down the line where a slower runner does not go to second or tag when he should....but it is FAR less.

Jim has some numbers on speed edits that maybe he could post....I kind of just bump them up either a half or one full letter. I think Jim went a little further.

Some other things. Rookies....as you are editing the teams.....and you come across a rookie...bump a guy up here and there. Nothing drastic with the rooks...just a little speed lift to a small outfielder. With pitchers....make the starters in the B's...they will progress.

To continue with editing....I edit my team first and then what I do is before I start a series...I edit the team I am about to play...and a team from the other league as a complitment. Try and do two teams from your league...Don't go too far into the season without editing the other clubs and don't wait for the interleague games to do the other league. Get it out of the way.

In manage only, I don't like the way the CPU handles throwing....so I go with ASSISTED throwing. This is a great feature...since if you don't touch the controller(which I don't 95% of the time) the CPU will handle everything, but if there is a guy on second...and the opposing team hits a single..and the guy is obviously going to score, I take over the throw once the guy gets to the ball. Otherwise he will likely throw home and let the runner advance to second. Another time is when there is a man on first with two outs. Alot of the time if a ground ball is hit to the infield...the CPU will try and get the guy at second...even if he was running on the play. I take over after the grounder is caught and throw to first to make sure of the out. You will get the feel for it.

Make a PROFILE and use it before you go to the game. You can set the gen count....the manage only mode....the assisted throwing ..ALL your preferences so that you don't have to change them every game.

Don't forget that some guys take longer to warm up than others....get to know your staff and start them early if necessary. Looper is ready in three batters for me...but Ginter takes almost and inning and a half sometimes.

Lastly, when you are at the screen right before you click advance...to the game don't forget that you can change....A. The stadium...it's great to get a little variety and play a couple of your games in a retro or one of Acclaim's GREAT parks. The stadiums in this game are TOP NOTCH...I think the best of any game!...B. The weather...play in the rain once in a while and C the time of the game.....I like to play the schedule as is...but you can play more night or day games if you like.

Hope this adds to your enjoyment of the game...
Feel free to ask any questions as the guys on this board are great.

Re: does asb 05 have manage only mode?

                    Knight,

Just saved your post as I'm completely starting a new season, creating the guys who need to be created, etc.

Yeah, those outfielders. By default John Mabry had an A plus rating. Hah!

I upped the runners(this has nothing to do with outfielders range) speeds. It helped with those gappers. A lot of runners have D, D+ ratings. I took the speeds up to B for most, those really slow got a C and those speedsters got As. It really made a "tag up" difference.

I also took the pitchers reaction, I think that's what it's called (see FIELDING). This made the pitchers get off the mound quicker. That wind up throw they did too first base really slowed things down, this seems to help.
Also upped the SS and 3B arm strength one letter.

It isn't all that time consuming. Do one team at a time before you play them and you're set.

It has made a 100% difference in the feel of the game and I saw nothing negative come from it.

hey I was wondering if any of these edits offset the simulation stats for the teams that you don't play. I mean with more speed, do these guys end up with more stolen bases at the end of the year. I'm just wondering, because I really wouldn't want someone like J.T Snow end up with like 15 stolen bases. Just wondering since I never bothered to do edits but after reading this, it reminds me of how muich I hate the cpu not tagging up or taking bases they shoudl have.

hey I was wondering if any of these edits offset the simulation stats for the teams that you don't play. I mean with more speed, do these guys end up with more stolen bases at the end of the year. I'm just wondering, because I really wouldn't want someone like J.T Snow end up with like 15 stolen bases. Just wondering since I never bothered to do edits but after reading this, it reminds me of how muich I hate the cpu not tagging up or taking bases they shoudl have.

also are these edits just for manage only. I like to play my games and I don't really want to disrupt what I got going right now. Thanks

The simmed games are NOT negatively effected. The offense if boosted slightly, but that's a good thing.
You can use these edits whether you play the games or not. I only play MOM, but I know other guys who actually play the games and use the edits.
