Okay guys, I was posting on the 2K boards earlier this morning, but for some reason someone deleted the "Official Patch Discussion" thread. Anyway, borrowed my firend's copy (took mine back for PS2 and The Show), to download the patch and see what exactly it did. Downloaded this morning and played three games before I had to come into work... These are my observations:
During my week plus with MLB2K6 the game froze on me only once. However, I gave up on the game because of the horrid framerate issues and sluggish player controls (understand the momentum modeled into the game, but response to my controller commands was just terrible). Previously to even get this game to remotely play well I had to detach the HD and run the game on my HDTV at 480p. That was the only way the game would play reasonably well.
Anyway, downloaded the patch and it was almost like playing another game. Previously I never had one diving grounder stop... not one. I would push the right stick in the correct direction, and almost a half second later the player would respond (didn't matter if I used wireless or wired controllers). Also, while I could check swing, it was very difficult and the response to my commands were very delayed.
Now, however the game responds pretty well. I can routinely check my swing if I catch it in time, the response time is pretty good. Additionally, in my first game with the patch I was able to stop 2 sharp grounders with Orlando Hudson (playing with D-Backs) using the right stick. Additionally I was able to make a diving catch of a blooper to center field with Eric Byrnes. Previously I could NEVER do this as I would pull the right stick down, and after a long delay, my player would always dive after the ball after it struck the ground, resulting in an inside the park home run.
I actually enjoyed the game a bit... I will play some more tonight, and assess if it's worth my time to continue playing. But all in all it was a much better experience. Still a little slow on the frame rate, especially throws across the infield, but definitely not unacceptable like before.
