Re: Article on improving MLB 2k8

Baseball Stars on the NES, still to this day, has the most FUN fielding system I've ever played.

I think the reason I like it is because the read and reaction time is so fast that when you make a play on the ball it really feels like you made the play. The perspective of the fielding on Baseball Stars is zoomed in but not too zoomed in like some older games. The defense responds immediately to your control and from the moment the ball is hit you are reacting and holding the direction for your player to get there. Making a diving stop up the middle with your shortstop is so much fun because it happens so fast and the control is fluid.

In addition, Baseball Stars has a simple but great throwing mechanic that again gives the user control so it feels like you are the one making the play. When you throw to a base you are supposed to press the throw button and the basedirection simultaneously. If you mistime it a little you get a weaker throw that baserunners often beat out. But if you time it right, your fielder rockets the ball to the base. This way, fielding a routine grounder and getting a fast runner out is really fun, because you control how hard of a throw you make. Making a diving save in the hole, getting up and timing the throw perfect to barely beat out the runner is even better. Newer throwing systems try to incorporate a user-controlled aspect to their throwing but it can come off as sluggish and routine because you often have to charge the throw. I'm sorry but a quick timing mechanic works a lot better because baseball is all about quick reactions, especially when turning two.

So to tie this in with 2k baseball, I think the fielders should move fast and fluid without a lot of momentum to navigate through. That makes the fielding more intuitive and reaction-based. The ball should scream through the infield on tough grounders, and line drives over the infielders heads should require quick reactions by the player to position and jump up to catch them. Placing too much momentum on the fielders just burdens the user control and fun factor imo. Fielding is a twitch reaction in real life and in order to make it fun, that should be carried over.

I think the camera should focus more on the baseball than the actual zoomed out view of the field, within reason of course. Playing the game, you should always be reacting to the ball at every moment. With modern games, it often seems too skewed toward identifying your fielder and then reacting to where the ball is headed. I like the feeling as if as soon as the ball is struck, I'm giving everything I have to get to spot where I think that ball is going. Newer games have such a zoomed out view of things that it's like the ball just kind of floats out to a spot, and you are passively controlling an animation instead of reacting to the ball yourself through the controller.

I disagree. Up until a month and a half ago when I traded in my PS2 for a Wii, I was still playing MVP 2005 regularly, with a Dynasty many years in.

Those problems you mention were all taken care of with a higher difficulty level and slider tweaks. This game is not dated in any way other than graphically. It still has the second best Francise/Dynasty Mode to ASB and still has the best gameplay in every aspect but pitching, where 2K's bests it.

Its looks like by mlb 2k9 we should all be happy with a well rounded game.

I wonder when they will have a "Postmortem MLB 07 The Show?" That would be one interesting discussion!

I know this is off topic, but I highly doubt that The Show will come out for the PS3.

Agree 100%. Also, complaining that the game didn't play right until sliders were tweaked is silly when it comes to sports games. They ALL need slider tweaks, even games that come really close to getting it right like CH2k7. I repurchased MVP '05 for the GC last summer after my PS2 was traded in toward my 360 in March and played it all fall and early winter. It's a really great game with a few oddities but ALL things considered, like graphics and presentation, probably on par with MLB 2k7. I still haven't gotten the sliders for 2k7 perfected to the point they were for MVP either, though maybe when I do nail them I'll say this is a slightly better game.

well i guess i will be passin on 2k7 for the 360 this year. i am currently lovin The Show 07 on the PS2, so i think my fix is set for this season. i am bummed, dont get me wrong.....i really wanted a baseball game for the 360, but with all of the glitches, the poor fielding cam, etc, i think i will just rent it, and check it out, but i am not throwin down $60. i have high hopes for
2k8....Brinkman will make the 2k baseball games what we've been waitin for.

Just read this- I like Brinkman's honesty about the fielding system. It's good that he's not delusional and admits faults in his products, unlike some other developers. I think 2K8 will be an outstanding game if they clean up the few annoyances with this version.

No guarantees there, either. I haven't played the well rounded baseball game yet and probably won't.

Man, don't bring up that game. Baseball Stars had so many innovative features in it that we didn't know that we had it so good. That's why baseball games are so MADDENINGLY frustrating to me.

Baserunning was so freaking easy. Even though 2K7 is a great baseball game, the baserunning is more complicated than it should be. Baseball Stars had the baserunning sweet spot!

Gotta agree with Roadman here. After all these years they are still struggling to get it right. Fix one thing, break another. Add a new thing, add a new bug.
