Re: Hands-on at Gamespot
Wow, so there is going to be a foul ball slider. Thats cool. I wonder if they put a baseball mit on the fans this year who catch the foul balls now that we will see more foul balls? I know they would catch them sometimes last year, but they always looked like they caught them with their wrist and they stuck there. Lol Anyone hear anything about this?Of course, if Dawson gets hot, and
Sutcliffe comes through, and....
Pa, see what you did to me?

Re: Hands-on at Gamespot
That's excellent news! I don't entirely like being able to push up for a flyball & vice versa. Now we just need a demo or something to prove this games greatness.Last edited by ericjwm; 02-15-2008, 04:34 AM.Comment

Re: Hands-on at Gamespot
It's different in more ways than one. First of all, this seems like it is an 11:00 AM game or something, and not necessarily 1:00. Secondly, they seem to have given a "marine layer" look to it, like you might see in Florida or something (minus the cloud-cover). It really looks worse than last year, IMO... but let's hope it was all in good intent.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

And Blzer: what does that oddly cryptic remark mean? My comments are meant for anyone who reads them...?

Re: Hands-on at Gamespot
When I was reading the Hands-on of the pitching part of this game, I noticed where Gamespot said the the pitch needed to be aimed prior to the break or movement, NOT where the ball would eventually end up. Is this correct? So for Barry Zito's nasty 12-6 monster, you would need to start the pitching cursor up high, under the chin, and then go through your motion-gesture-release, and based on how well you performed the three steps, would be the tell-tale factor on the break and location of the pitch? Where the hell will we aim Wakefield's Knuckle ball? Now, if this is true, then I would tend to believe that the meatball thing may not be so much of an issue. If you are going to start a slider on the outside corner of the plate, and you totally screw up the release, would it not stand to reason that the ball would be low and outside as opposed to automatically ending up as a big red beacon in the middle of the plate? I am hopeful, after reading some more on the mechanics of the pitching, that the meatball that everyone is so afraid of, would only rear its ugly head when the pitch that was chosen was missed to the direction of the ensuing meatball. Let's hope.
I also read that guys that throw screwballs and pitches that are tough on one's arm, will tire more quickly than a guy throwing 2 seamers. Very cool if this is true. Will certainly make pitch selection in the early innings an interesting factor. If you can live on the fastball-change for the first run through the line-up, then mix in some of the offspeed stuff, maybe your guy gets an extra inning or two out of his start. Nice idea if it is indeed implemented.
You will have to learn the tendencies of the umpire to learn if he is giving corners or not? How cool is this. Perhaps this is why they show you, after the visting half of the 1st inning, the umpiring crew in that nice little cut scene. So, you see that Mike Franzen is behind the dish, and the last game he liked to call inside stuff on the edge. Will that mean that Mike is programmed to call those pitches everytime he is behind the plate, or will the umpire have a random like/dislike assigned to him before each game, regardless of what game he called the last time? I kind of like this idea, again, if we see it actually show up when the game ships. Would make pitching with Maddux, and his extra 6 inches of strike zone on the outer half, a lot of fun...and very frustrating for the batters.
In all, I am excited about some of the stuff that seems to be making this game more of a SIM, and we certainly will have to see what happens come release day, but for now, I am upgrading my position to Cautiously Optomistic.

Re: Hands-on at Gamespot
Everyone is making a deal of the meat pitch like it wasnt there last year!.....its the samething as last year....if u miss ur pitch it will go off the ur intended target....The pitching was the same too...u select the break point not the target....so I dont see y people r making a big deal....just because the way u throw the pitch changed doesnt mean the pitching scheme changed completely....there were meatballs last year too just wasnt called that....This year its just harder to hit ur spot so ur more prone to it....Comment
