i'm sure the reason for aiming at the break point instead of the ending point is to make location a bit more difficult, although that will only happen if pitchers have different breaks to their pitches and changes as they tire.

I think so too....if u had to pick where u wanted it to land its too easy....that means u locate ur curve just like a fastball....u have to adjust ur location depending on pitch and pitcher...Comment

Re: Hands-on at Gamespot
I keed, of course.
I meant that both you and I are not part of that crowd that needs a "LOL n00b" text in front of us to tell us when an out was recorded and when a foul ball was hit. Anyone that's played or watched baseball for a week would say that Like I said before, it's just best that it is an option.
When I play, I try and remove as much as possible, so I look like I'm playing an actual broadcasted game as closely as possible. That means I remove names under players, strike zones, top-line dropdowns, pitch/swing feedbacks, ball trail, the fly ball landing target (once I learn the game's fly balls well enough), I set audio settings to TV Broadcast, and I even raise pitch speed to a realistic number, just so I can say that I am closely representing the game (though I can normally play with those speeds also... but in 2K7, there was awful swing response that didn't allow this for me). I'm also the person that asked for no-doubter foul balls to have no cutscene, and I think I got my wish, which is truly awesome!
That said, this text is just another thing that needs an option for removal. So does the pitching cursor (I hear it can "fade", but "off" wouldn't be so bad, either). Oh, and I also hope there is also an option to remove the throwing meter as well. Just gets in the way.
I watched PastaPadre's three inning demo of The Show, and unless 2K's demo really excites the hell out of me, I can't see why I could choose it. That said, I'm already waiting for next year's games, because I know that The Show has yet to offer things that I've been waiting for on their end as well (though the list is much smaller, and I really think SCEA has their priorities right), and their stances are often not as accurate and borderline exaggerated. However, I think that for once I may be able to make that sacrifice for an awesome baseball title this year. I still can't believe the video game had the commentary line, "Look at Lugo!" right on the fly. I think that part widened my eyes more than anything in that batch of videos.
So now people wonder why I always had complaints, praises, etc. for this game, even when I didn't own the console. It's because when the time came for me to finally make a next-gen decision, I wanted both games to be the best that they possibly could be. It looks like 2K went halfway with a few requests and gripes, but we may have to wait until 2K9 for that final way up. But I hear that once you go to The Show, you can't go back (that was certainly the case for last-gen when I got '06).Last edited by Blzer; 02-15-2008, 10:21 AM.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: Hands-on at Gamespot
Online games are going to suck balls if the 12 year old kid chooses Zach Grinke and his 59mph curveball, and locates it from inning one to inning nice in the same exact spot. I sure hope that the game will require the pitcher to have to make adjustments as he begins to tire, because those spots become harder to dot as your arm gets tired, and you throw more pitches. Where I aim my curveball ought to be different in the 7th inning than it was in the first. This just makes sense.

Wow. If anyone has not seen the 3 inning Demo game of the Show at Pastapadre, head on over there and watch it. Talk about getting all the little things incorporated into the game.... Mannerisms, the way Tek looks up at the batters before they dig in to see if they are trying to steal signs, Tek holds up the ball for the ump to see on the third strike in the dirt, just watch the demo and look at how close it looks like a real broadcast. The crowd at Fenway HATES Matt Holliday, and of course, he is the one that hurts them in the third. YOOOOUK.... when Kevin comes tot he plate, and watch the bat flip on the no-doubter by Holliday. I have to say, I enjoyed watching those three innings a lot. See what you guys think.

I don't like pushing up for a flyball either, but I did love the MVP system of "pushing up gives an uppercut swing". You weren't guarenteed a flyball, depending on pitch location, but it just made "sense" to me.
If I'm trying to hit a sac fly, my swing would be more of an uppercut then a flat one....Comment

Re: Hands-on at Gamespot
What I really can't comprehend on these boards is the lack of perspective we have. I love the Show - really I do. I have purchased it EVERY year since MLB:05(I thought it was better than MVP:05 actually) and I will certainly purchase it again this year. That being said - the basic game engine hasn't changed much at all. The past year they have just been fine tuning stuff and as such they have the time to add ALL the little stuff like beach balls, crotch grabs, and background construction that we love.
I'm not bumping for the folk at 2K but they don't have that luxury. The game was seriously broke (2K6) and from a "respectable" effort in 2K7 they have totally revamped ALL the major gameplay elements for 2K8. We sail ALL last year how it was a 3 year plan - Remember that? Yet for the last month - all I am readings is how:
1) The don't have the "little" things like the Show
2) It doesn't look different from last year
3) People selling their 360's to get a PS3
I dunno - it's probably just me. I'm older, more easily annoyed and have little patience. Me personally - I am just stocked at the new gameplay elements - ESPECIALLY the pitching. I know the graphics will look great because they did last year and I look forward playing the game before I decide it's trash. But what do I knowComment

Re: Hands-on at Gamespot
I love the idea of this pitching mechanic, and if it is implemented right, will be a huge revolution in terms of how to attack a very complicated process, and portray that onto a video game. I love the fact that some of the rotational movement of the R-stick makes "sense" in terms of how the ball is released. I wish the movement of the stick was different for each pitcher based on his attributes, but maybe next year. I think that the game is on the way to breaking ground in its gameplay, but I am just hoping that some of the things that seem to be popping up in the first released demos and copies of the games that were shipped to the different magazines, aren't just chalked up to, "Well we did not have time to fix that this year". I am not under the impression that this is an acceptable answer. If a pitch that is meant to be down in the dirt suddenly becomes a silver-plattered spinner that gets hit 500 feet... that is not an acceptable solution. If a ball goes over the fence by 100 feet, and is absolutely crushed, a shortstop running out to shallow left waving his arms for the cutoff throw is just plain lazy. If a runner is rounding third, and the cutoff throw comes in, the cutoff man just throwing the ball into his own glove and not attempting a play at the plate is unacceptable. I understand the whole "three year" thing that we have heard so much about, and year three was certainly the Coup de` grace for the MVP Series with what my have been the finest effort ever in a console game. But we cannot be saddled with overlooked BS, and then fed the fact that they "hoped that would make the final build, but had to be scrapped". I think not.
Now, if indeed the entire gameplay system, the engine for hitting and running, and the pitching and ball flight physics were totally revamped and rebuilt from the ground up, so much in fact that we have to miss out on the "little things" and fluffy stuff, in order to get a pure baseball SIM... That is more than okay with me. But if the core of the game engine is just not ready for the next step towards a real baseball game, painting the turd pink is not going to make it smell any better. I am not pre-judging, as I have not played the game, and I cannot base what I have seen so far in the videos on much of anything, as the guys who were playing the game all but admitted they had no idea what they were doing.
I am just hoping for a great game of baseball, and the fancy frosting on that tasty cake can wait if need be.

I agree. I never played 2K6 or for that matter 2K7, but that was a personal choice and had to do with a complete lack of a minor league system (at least a functional one). But I read peopele's opinions of how horrid 2K6 was and judging by comments made last year's version was an improvement.I think Brinkman gave this game instant credibility, however it may have hurt his 3 year plan because people expect an instant classic. Sorry for rambling but what I'm trying to say is if 2K6 was as big a pile of manure as everyone said it was, and Brinkman says it's a 3 year process to get the game where it needs to be, than another improvement this year will put this game on track for reaching those goals next year. I realize we live in a world of instant gratification, but with the implementation of minor league teams this year, actual minor league stadiums and some new game play features, I will give this game a chance, while also enjoying all the wonderful features and gameplay of The Show 08.Comment

Re: Hands-on at Gamespot
You will have to learn the tendencies of the umpire to learn if he is giving corners or not? How cool is this. Perhaps this is why they show you, after the visting half of the 1st inning, the umpiring crew in that nice little cut scene. So, you see that Mike Franzen is behind the dish, and the last game he liked to call inside stuff on the edge. Will that mean that Mike is programmed to call those pitches everytime he is behind the plateComment

Will that mean that Mike is programmed to call those pitches everytime he is behind the plate, or will the umpire have a random like/dislike assigned to him before each game, regardless of what game he called the last time? I kind of like this idea, again, if we see it actually show up when the game ships. Would make pitching with Maddux, and his extra 6 inches of strike zone on the outer half, a lot of fun...and very frustrating for the batters.

Re: Hands-on at Gamespot
There was some small variances in the zones last year. One might give you an extra inch or two on the corners compared to another guy. I don't know if it was programmed to individual umpires ( I never paid enough attention) or if it was just random. I don't know if there was enough of a difference to make a big difference, but I would definitely find it refreshing (and I'm sure trying and frustrating at the same time) if in one game you were just being absolutely squeezed by the umpire and getting no corner whatsoever and then the next game your getting a very liberal "Maddux" type zone where you are getting 3 or 4 inches off the plate. And then maybe the next game is just a traditional zone.Comment
