The first Dreamcast baseball game, World Series Baseball, didn't have manual fielding. But it was gorgeous.

It's GameCube follow-up Home Run Kings is also a very under-appreciated baseball game. Full swing follow-throughs, not just stances, were motion captured. I still don't think a game has done that.

I think 2k will be better than The Show in a year or two.

The superior controlls and signature styles are there, now all they need to do is fix the gameplay and give us a deeper franchise mode.Kush should have done this a long time ago, but every year they went with some stupid gimmick like slam zone, meatballs, and trading cards. And on top of that, rocket arms, super unrealistic wall scaling, A.I that doesn't steal, clunky fielding, etc...Theres no way Kush knew anything about baseball.

I thought 2k8 was better than the show but hey that's just me.
I have no doubt that this years game will top that.

This thread is somewhat pointless, but I'll bite.

No, 2k9 is not going to be anywhere close to The Show 09. Next question.

It doesnt have to be better this year, it just has to be a good game. The switch over, i just dont see how it could compete with features and all the fluff at this point in time. The game just has to be a good fun game of baseball in the sim area.

I think thats what most people want for this year. Just for the game to be good and heading in the right direction.

Once again you cant compare these games a one is practical a first year game and the other has been almost a sports game of the year at OS with 3 solid years under its belt.
Accept both on their own merits or you will be disappointed.

Not a chance. I played 2k for so many years. Finally after last years joke of a game, I broke down and bought a PS3 for only one purpose. To give MLB08 a try. It was hands down the best baseball game since High Heat on PC. This year sounds even better. IMO, 2K needs to step up there game before everyone else does what I did. Its the best purchase I have had in a long time.

I have a 360 and wish the 2k series was as good as The Show. Many here seem to like the stick for batting and pitching, but i think it sucks. Can only hope for better with 2K9.

...and lastly...yes....you can say the swing stick is "more realistic"..but really what is it...it's a mechanism.....pull back and you get an animation....push it and you get the animation. Yes a few more animations that the button...but so much advanced?

I don't want to go comparing the two games ...just wanted to throw that out there.

Why not come clean and just say, "I don't like the swing stick; nyah, nyah, boo boo!" Because it would make about as much sense as your 'argument' here.

This isn't about preference. It's about designing and implementing game controls that mimic the sport which the game is attempting to replicate. In baseball, a batter steps as the pitch is coming in an effort to maximize his swing -- that's what the swing stick in combination with step-influence is imitating. Batters do not stand stationary until the pitch crosses the plate -- that's what The Show offers. You might not care for the swing stick, but no question 2K is attempting to add a degree of realism (and difficulty) to video baseball that simply isn't present in The Show.

Ask those who played NHL 09 and used the skill stick if going back to pushing buttons would be a realistic and 'sim' step forward for the series. I guarantee you 99.5% of them would say no.

And of course you did, because you're just so very interested in 2K baseball, and taking an honest look at what it has to offer that The Show doesn't, now aren't you? Wink, wink, etc and so forth, uh-huh.

I like how you leave out that I said it's attempt is "more realistic" ...but that's okay...that wouldn't fit into your argument.
                              Cool.
My point was....if you like swing stick that's great...but you're saying to dismiss The Show without it?
                              Silly.

...and to compare it to hockey is also a bad comparison IMO.....
When you are batting...you have the bat back and ready to go. It doesn't start in front of you....even with you or something similar and THEN you bring it back to swing....so it just works better for baseball IMO then it does in hockey.

I think overall there are 2 major variables that should be attempted to replicate a baseball swing in a video game. First of course is timing and the other of course is differentiating a good swing versus a bad swing. I am a fan of just keeping it simple because if you get too complicated you can ruin the goal in hit variety and realistic batted ball physics. Just keep it simple with a very good timing based system where every milisecond makes a difference in the physics of a batted ball opposed to say every hundredth of a second. Just tighten up the time zone tenfold so there is a much increased variety in hits and it is challenging. Also work on the physics of the entire swing and batted ball process. That being bat speed (bat speed will be much greater on inside pitches that are pulled because the bat has more time to obtain a fast speed) while batted balls that are hit the other way there will be less power because the player has less time to obtain maximum bat speed (ball is deeper in the zone). All these variables plus sweet spot of bat on ball etc should be tweaked and increased year in and year out to achieve a realistic batting experience in baseball video games.

I felt like MVP for example did a very good job with the batted ball physics. It was much harder to hit for power the other way then it was to pull and I think the physics engine there was on the right track. And no I am not a fanboy of MVP there were many things about the series that I did not like and the #1 gamekiller for me was pitching and how I never would give up walks.
