When you bat, you hold the bat behind you, yes. However, as the pitcher releases the ball, you lift your front leg or shift your weight and draw the bat back even further, attempting to time that movement with your next movement -- your swing forward. That's what the swing stick and step-influence emulates. 2K did exactly what EA did with the skill stick and for hockey: they created controls that mimic the physical movements that a batter goes through while attempting to hit a baseball.

You can argue that it isn't well done, or that you prefer button pushing. But it's more realistic than simply pushing a button to swing as the ball crosses the plate. That can't be argued. It adds a new and higher level of realism, in the same way EA's skill stick does.

I've continually stated The Show is a superior game. Over and over again. So no, I'm hardly dismissing The Show. What I said about the swing stick is that 2K is attempting to move baseball video gaming forward in a way SCEA isn't. SCEA is content with pitching and batting controls that have been standard in baseball games for a couple of decades. 2K is attempting to add innovative controls that take hitting and pitching to a new level.

Another very simple comparison would be NFL 2K5 and the way VC programmed the stick for the running game. It was innovative then, and it's still unmatched in video football. That's what 2K/VC is attempting with the swing stick and step-influence. It's without question the most innovative addition to baseball gaming in a decade. And I'll tell you what's silly: arguing about this. SCEA will be adding a swing stick within the next 2-3 years, guaranteed. Maybe even next year if MLB 2K9 sells well and gives SCEA some competition.

Knight did you read my entire post? I was talking about the ps2 version. I know the ps3 version is going to be great and not a roster update.
NBA2K is the standard of sports games period.

Baa, I finally went ahead and played a couple of games with the Swing Stick.

Wow. I set the difficulty on All Star, just to get a handle on the mechanism. Timing both elements of the swing is a challenge. And, the hit variety is improved over the "classic" one button. I hit a lot more ground balls, a few more line drives, and hit one moon-shot homerun that felt satisfying as hell.

After two games with the stick, I'm not sure I can go back to one-button swinging.

I'm with you. After using the Swing Stick, I never want to go back to one-button swinging. I mean, button swinging was fine in RBI Baseball for the original Nintendo, but I like to take it to a higher level now.

There's just more to concentrate on, and more variables at play. Nothing is more frustrating than to see a pitcher "groove" one, only to miss-time his release and rollover on it; hitting a weak grounder. It also makes getting a hold of one much, much more satisfying.

lol...talk about uncalled for. If someone prefers the way the button system feels then they should be playing Nintendo games?.

Anyway, I agree that the Swing Stick certainly adds another dimension to hitting when functioning correctly.

                  2K fanboys are so cute.

The 2K series is not even close to The Show series. I mean it's night and day. 99% of the time, the people that defend 2K baseball are the people who don't have PS3's.

I'd love to see how many PS3 fans own 2K8 baseball and NOT the Show 08. Anyone who has a PS3 is going to play the better baseball game, The Show.

Just my opinion that I think button hitting is too old school. If other people want to use it, that's cool, but I was just saying that I like to take it to another level. Not saying that others should be playing Nintendo games, but just that it's basically the same hitting system that was used 20 years ago. If people like button hitting though, that's fine with me. I just personally find it too basic, but I'm not trying to insult anyone by saying that.

And some of The Show users can be so smug (notice the word "some", as I won't stoop to the same level of generalizations). But really there's no reason to diss people who like both games. I have been playing The Show since 06 and yes it's a solid series, and yes it's better than 2K in some ways, but it's not "night and day" better than 2K. In my opinion, the controls are superior in 2K baseball (I get too bored with The Show's batting and fielding controls), and it looks like this year the the graphics are going to be quite amazing, so let's hope the rest is great as well. With the right sliders, 2K8 was actually a pretty decent game. I have confidence that 2K9 is going to be better than 2K8 in just about every way.

I think both The Show and 2K9 are going to be solid games this year.

Great to hear. I'm surprised to hear you haven't tried it until now. The added hit variety was something others commented on in the impressions thread last spring. It's pretty clear 2K baseball was programmed to be used with the swing stick. Button hitting feels like it was tacked on at the last minute.

I love the button hitting in The Show when I play that game. It feels good and, apart from the issues with the contact window size, it's programmed really well. I just don't think I want to spend money this year on MLB 09 for the PS2, seeing if I want a game with button swinging, I can just play 08. But I don't buy games every year anyway. I'm still playing Tiger Woods 06, lol.

No, no...i get you (hence the "lol" and the wink). I was just making the point that it could easiliy be taken as insulting by someone who doesn't share your view, as it could be interpreted as a blanket comment and didn't infer "I" (as evidenced by the post after mine, I see...lol.).

                        Anyway, I'm fine

Jeezus man, don't you think you should at least be posting here for a few weeks before hitting us with the internet thug attitude? Sheesh. And you'd be hardpressed to find one person on OS who thinks 2K baseball is better than The Show at this point, so you bombed on that comment as well, sorry. You know, it's like you showed up here just to toss out a 'fanboy' comment, but without considering that whatever you said actually had to make degree of sense.

Okay...more uncalled for. Why come into a 2K forum to make such claims?

99% of the time people use percentages, they're made up. I'm willing to be that the majority of the time (no % here) people "defend" 2K baseball because they actually prefer it. As odd of a concept as differing opinion are, it does happen from time to time.

To be honest, aside from a few exchanges like these, this thread has remained mostly mature...despite these differing opinions too
