Will 2k9 make people want to go out and buy a PS3/360? No
Will The Show make people want to go out and buy a PS3? Yes

Re: Does anyone think 2k9 is going to be better than the show this year?

      My answer is..

What does it matter? I'm dead serious. Who cares which game is "better"? As long as they both move in a positive direction....then we as gamers are in good shape.
Are you not going to get one game over another because it might have one point above the other or vice versa?
Get the game you enjoy...and enjoy it!...and stop worrying about "the other guy".
You'll be MUCH happier in the grand scheme of things IMO

They each have a place and a specific area they will shine in.

Couple that with the fact it's only available to PS3 owners, and you've not only got an IT game, you're a "fool" if you own a 360 rather than a PS3. Which is why you see people coming on threads like this and posting comments like, "LOL at this thread and anyone who thinks 2K9 is going to be better than The Show."

Being part of the IT crowd also means you're a member of the cool gang, so to speak. And being a member of the cool gang means you can post ridiculously biased comments like that about the other game, in the other game's forum, without retribution, because other members of the gang have your back. Other forums at OS work this way as well, BTW; I'm just using The Show as an example because we're discussing baseball games.

Anyway, if you think I'm wrong, go to the SCEA forum and post, "LOL at everyone who thinks The Show will be better than MLB 2K9." Then sit back and watch the fireworks. Prepare to be "ganged-up on" in other words.

            ...Are you serious?What a tool.

It doesn't have to be better, just good. Not every baseball fan found The Show to be the end all be all of baseball games. I just want a good, fun baseball game. If 2K9 delivers, then I'm happy.

We should just start copying and pasting this. It's getting really tired why one game has to be better.

From the looks of it, IMHO The Show will be the better representation of the MLB authenticity. SO WHAT? If you enjoy 2k9, that's all that matters. Their success leads to continued innovation and better games for EVERYONE.

I think MLB 2K9 is much more innovative when it comes to the controls and trying to give you that next gen feel of playing a game of baseball. The Show is just a solid tried and true game of baseball that instead of concentrating on doing something innovative is content with fleshing out the details.

What's wrong with having mature discussions? As long as people can behave and not act like kids i dont see any problems
NBA2K is the standard of sports games period.

My intentions for making this thread were to get people thinking positively about the game. I have a feeling this game is going to surprise more people this year than disappoint. And I feel after reading about at all the "gameplay" features people should start to think about how similar 2k9 and the show will be this year. After reading some of the positive responses to this thread, it is good to see people are excited about this game.

Not a chance. But I do feel this years 2k will be leaps and bounds above the past few. I'm interested and will give it a fair shake this year.

Well we've gotten just about all we need to know concerning "The Show" as of now, so I'd say its 2K's turn. They need to get an impressive trailer up showing more than just Lincecum & Griffey, so people have more to go by & don't have to speculate quite as much. A representative for VC on OS would be nice as well.... to wake this dying fan base.

I'm very interested to see what 2K9 as a whole is going to offer. I guess we'll get another Linceum clip by Friday. It's just sad that they won't show us a little more at this point.

Re: Does anyone think 2k9 is going to be better than the show this year?

At first I was going to respond to alot of the comments but some are getting just silly to me.... I will say this

                              1. 2K wont be better than The Show...it doesnt need to be either. For the sake of all fans we need comp and they just need to keep up. So far they have done a bad job at this.

                              2. 2K should not try to compete with the Show...they should just try to make a decent game that the 360 only owners deserve. They owe it to Microsoft, 360 users, and baseball gaming fans to create a game that is playable and wont have people thinkingabout buying a PS3. The Shows greatness didnt sell PS3...2Ks badness sold PS3s

Now onto the issue of controls

Hitting - The swing stick does a horrible job at simulating hitting. I will say it time and time again. It doesnt allow you to aim your swing and is thus just an elaborate timing system. This annoyed me when I only had a 360...now I am glad they have an alternate system 1) some peeps love that system and good for them 2) They can keep working on the system until it becomes a good sim at which point I hope The Show steals it. Until then 2K is like AA baseball...its a league to experiment with things. The Shows controls are still button press because so far that system is the best to incorporate the timing and aiming element to hitting.

Pitching - 2K has an uneceassarily complicated system imo that doesnt sim pitching anymore than The Shows meter system. Once again this would irritate me...but I am happy there is a place to work on new ideas. When they get something decent I hope teh Show takes it. I do think that gaming pitching needs an overhaul and I was looking forward to what 2K was going to do. But it just didnt hit the mark for me...but I hope they keep at it. While they are experimenting I personally am happy with the quality Show meter system. The Show just doesnt change things to change things...they see how it fits and only put it in if it will certainly work.

Throwing - 2K might have a better system. But it is something very small. Is pusing on the analog in a direction that much more difficult or challenging then hitting a button? Idk. But its cool to have difference. If the Show had this...I wouldnt care either way personally

OUTCOMES - This is where 2K falls flat and is where it loses the all important feel of the game. In 2K there is no difference in hitting a high fastball or low fastball...so it loses the feel of the game. Pitching...Yes, I may not be able to get the motion for a curveball down a bunchof times in a game...but i expect that Josh Beckett has this perfected and would miss less than me...so one can easily lose the feel of being Beckett. Not to mention that Mo's cutter has NO significance in the game. A user can hit a cutter in as easily as FB over the plate...so whats the point. Hit variety is just way off so it once again loses the feel of the game.

I find it ironic that 2K does such a great job of getting players to look like their real selves, but they dont play like themselves as well compared to the Show

Extras - Now I just talked about controls and the feel of the game. When we get into presentation, crowd, and ALL the little things...its not even close. AI is sooo much better in the Show. This stuff all adds to the feel of the game. To make matters worse it seems they are upping the ante in 09. So the gap may get alot wider.

2K will not and does not need to better than the Show. They just need to provide a viable alternative that experiments with new ideas while still making a semi decent game and reasonable alternative to the Show...or at the bare minimum an alternative to buying a PS3

The hit variety in 2k8 was very good & a direct result of the Swing Stick Option. Not to mention the implementation of the Step Influence Slider which also added much depth to the mechanic.

Though the TCP Option may have been FLAWED. The ability to tweak the TCP Slider allowed the user to learn the mechanic & then make the Slider Harder as they went along. The biggest problem was the AI didn't throw many balls (though if you turn Inside Edge ON the AI did pitch a little more realistically) & the User was penalized too much with MEATBALLS when they wouldn't finish the motion correctly.

I will say this once you learned the mechanic pulling off the TCP Motion & watching as you threw that 12-6 hook for a called 3rd strike was very satisfying.

Would it hurt to give 2k credit for a very good & realistic throwing system?

The AI in 2k8 was very good, except for the whole Stolen Base Fiasco. So again to say the AI in The Show is sooooo much better is again your opinion.

As for upping the ante & widening the gap, are you talking about stuff like Dynamic Lighting (Which was already in 2k)

The additional Sig styles they've added (2K been there & done that with the addition of another 300 Sig Styles for this year)

Presentation which Yes The Show does better than anyone else, but 2k also will have NEW Presentation including a New Announcing Team & the addition of a new Presentation Style with more REAL-TIME things going on & less Cut-Scenes.

It does seem from the Community Leaders Report The Show has added a good number of animations to 09. As 2k we really don't know much about how many game animations have been added, so I will default this to The Show.

I find interesting that 2k's use of the Analog Controls for Pitching, Hitting & Fielding are "experiments" to many when in reality they are far from it. They are the "preferred" control scheme by 2k sports & not just some gimmick like many see them.

No doubt 2k is not in the same place as The Show, but with VC now developing this game is heading in the right direction...
