    Re: 2017 Roster-MLB 2K13 (360)

Played 2 and a half games today. Just jumping back in after a short break away from the game.

A few questions regarding some things I know have been discussed before but not sure if we've come up with any solid answers.

What can be done about the pitches turning red and your pitcher getting rocked thereafter? Have we figured out why it happens? Is it tied to the frequency attribute that is assigned for that pitch. Can it be influenced by the composure slider or composure attribute? I struggled in the 1.5 games I pitched with James Paxton. I know that it is fully possible and a small sample size. However, once his fastball turned red, I was in big trouble.

Also, do we know what attributes contribute to the overall rating for a player? Do we know which attributes are used in the simulation aspect of the game? For example, is the batter eye used in either of those situations? Or is it simply for player in game and the frequency of knowing a pitch or location (if you have it enabled. . .I do not)?

Only a few things were slightly off with the M's organization by the way. Absolutely great job with this roster. Is there a way to have long hair on any player? (Taylor Motter)

A few guys were slightly overrated, Gallardo, Heston. I don't know what the OF arm ratings look like throughout the league, but Leonys Martin is considered to have a great arm and is only rated 81. Very nitpicky there obviously, lol! I'm just throwing everything out there, see what is and is not possible!

Absolutely amazing work getting this roster so solid. Tons of players all the way through the minors. Thanks a million!

I messed with the pitch tendencies on the Reditor but never came up with anything solid. If you look at those within the Reditor you'll notice that it always adds to 100. So if I guy throws 4 pitches his 4 pitch tendency ratings will add up to 100.

So I did a test and used a 2 pitch pitcher and gave him 100 on one pitch. But still after 4 pitches of the same type it was always red.

I never thought of composure being mixed in with this.

Once I get back from my game I'll try to do a few tests with that. One thing to note, that I always assumed that the pitch on A was their highest tendency pitch, and all the way up to RB being the least thrown pitch. Not exactly the case. You'll have to hit up the box score, find that player and then hit Y on him to see their actual tendency.

That guy's fastball may have been his third pitch even though in the A slot. Would be great to work on this because as a Red Sox guy I can't pitch with Wright, not worth my while.

Big game today, coaching against my old college coach. Should be a battle!

Nice idea in theory but it just cannot work the way it is implemented. I would assume it is hard coded and we are stuck with it. Adding pitches to the pitcher's repertoire might help but it is not realistic so I guess we are stuck with this.

You can get ratings from the Show 17 on daddyleagues. Thats what I've been using to make some rating changes. Also a good source for pitch types and speed/movement.

Yep, that's the link he posted to check out yesterday. I like how the players are rated. However, double checking with fangraphs for pitches would be the best scenario. Good stuff, I think we should try to use those numbers to base the entire roster off of. Big project though!

I'd like you guys to check this site out and review your fav teams and others n give me your opinion. I want to know if you guys want these ratings or to just keep it how it is?
Tigers are my team, I think Iglesias speed should be higher then 70 no?

Has anyone tried taking a pitcher from the default roster, before changing any attributes and pitching in a game. Noting the tendencies for pitches and if they turn red or not? Then try different pitchers with fewer pitches and so forth. Also, mixing in some slider changes for composure.

I've tried playing this game and 12 with composure set to 0 that is they do not get rattled and there is no difference. Pitches still turn red as quickly as if you are playing with composure levels set very high.

So with the formulas I've been working on it's taking me a bit of time to type of the equations. A lot of it goes into calculating league averages for every single stat. Such as slugging percentage from just singles, doubles, triples, and homeruns each.

The good news is once I lay out the ground work, which might take another week or two, I will be able to plug in every batter who had a plate appearance and every pitcher who threw a pitch last year and have their rating calculated automatically.

More or less, the spreadsheet I am making will be able to be utilized for every upcoming season. No guessing what any category should be. It's all math and it will be mostly automatic. My goal is to make a one stop shop for player ratings.

I like the fact that there is a nice separation of attributes, using the full range of the 1-100 scale. Not sure if 70 is appropriate for Iglesias, he didn't steal a load of bases, but maybe he is very speedy but just doesn't run often or is very adept at getting a jump? I know the fastest guys in the game like Hamilton and Dyson are 99 and 98, which would show up dramatically when an average fast guy is in the 70's.

Lots to think about here. Also, how does the game engine recognize and utilize the speed attribute? Are there breaking points for certain animations or tendencies? Good stuff. I imagine there is a lot that we don't know about this game. I learned a ton about Madden back in the day, imagine if there were as many people studying the correlation of attributes and sliders for this game as there is/was for madden.

My calculations for Jose Iglesias has him at a 75 Speed. This is calculated by:

                          =(SB+R)/PA

That equation is then divided by the league average which is the League Total of SB and R divided by the League Total of PA.

Hamilton, Marte, Dyson, Dee Gordon, etc. were calculated with a 99 with the same equation.

                            That seems very reasonable.

How would we approach newer players with few to zero plate appearances and prospects?

With newer players such as players who just came up from the minors there's a separate field for <50 PA, <25 PA, and <10 PA. Which basically takes there's base stat multiplies it by 0.9. Say you have a player who has come up from the minors and ends up having a calculated rating of 85 contact against righties in 20 AB. It would be as follows:

                              BASE CONTACT: 85
                              <50 AB: 77
                              <25 AB: 70

You basically keep multiplying the previous number by 0.9 until get to <10AB. Less than 10 AB would bring a score of 63 since you would multiply the <25 AB score of 70 and multiply it by 0.9.

That looks good, but what I see as a problem is that not all players' stats are representative of their skills over a small amount of at-bats.
