    Re: Owner Mode

Are you talkin' about a memory card file? When you say you have a modded game- you just mean you've spent alot of time editing the game yourself, right? Sorry for the stupid questions, you just threw me a little with the term modded for a PS2 game.

I might be a little strange, but I actually enjoy the setup and editing as much as playing the actual game...even if it does annoy the wife a little. So if this game is as customizable as it sounds, I would love it.

Well, there is a file from mvpmods that actually mods the game (as a file). Once you load up the file, then all the changes are clearly visible. You will see updated statistics (along with their career statistics), updated contracts, managers, budgets, and even affiliates. I was amazed when the sports ticker referred the Angels as "LAA." I couldnt have been more pleased. So no, I do not edit it myself. However, I did edit EVERY single players ratings. Juan Pierre has only have a 5 power rating based on my personal formula. I use my logorithims to determine what a players rating should be based on their statistics over a 3 year stretch. When I skip seasons to test them out, I get some good results: League leader in CG is about 5-6, K's around the 230-250 range, HR leaders have about 43-48, and SB's top out at close to 60 and save leaders are in the mid 40's with the eilite ones converting 85-95%, while the medicore ones have a success rate about 75-80%. I am just enjoying this game right now. I am 6-15 as of right now with the Nats. Although I am 7 GB, I think I have a shot if I can bring in a solid starter and/or 2 rock solid bullpen arms. If I cannot climb back by June, I will become a seller.

        Re: Owner Mode

Man, this owner mode has really kept me away from the show on the ps3. Just had a 3 game series against the Mets and took 2. One on a walk off 3 run HR from Adam Dunn (his fourth) and another win came because of a solid start from John Lannan (who dropped his ERA more than a full run to 7.20).

I am 8-16, 6 GB from the Mets. As already mentioned, I edited every single player in the game based on a personal formula (from MLB to A ball players) and am getting some awsome results from the entire league as well as my team.

        Here are a few:

        Christian Guzman: .308 Avg. 0 HR, 7 RBI, 6 2b, 2 SB
        Ryan Zimmerman: .258 Avg. 3 HR, 12 RBI, 5 2b
        Adam Dunn: .233 Avg. 4 HR, 12 RBI, 3 2b (29 K's though)

        Daniel Cabrera: W: 0 L: 3, ERA: 6.58, K: 28, BB: 12
        John Lannan: W: 1 L: 2, ERA: 7.20, K: 12, BB: 10
        Scott Olsen: W: 2 L: 2, ERA: 5.60, K: 15, BB: 8
        Joel Hanrahan: 4 of 6 in saves, ERA: 3.68, K: 16, BB: 5

I think I can have a chance for at least a wild card birth if I can obtain a solid starter and 2 solid bullpen arms to go along with Hanrahan. How are you guys doing on your franchise?

              Re: Owner Mode

I absolutely loved owner mode, I played it for a while a couple years ago. I may start up another one soon if I can get the rosters updated(Action replay doesn't work on my computer). I was thinking about just playing a regular franchise, but then I saw this thread and it reminded me how fun Owner mode was. I really like the challenge and the strategy involved in it.

Also, I remember the stadium that you get to create, it's very difficult to see the ball, right? Is there an upgrade that you can get to make it better, or do we just have to live with it?

I hear you. I was playing the show for ps3 and just decided to try out mvp again (which is still my favorite game of all time). I uploaded new rosters, chose the Nationals in owner mode and I just haven't been able to take the game out. This mode is just fantastic. And like you said, it is very challenging. If you want to spend like the Yanks early on, you will never be able to get out of the red (especially with a low market team). Just amazing.

Anyways, to answer your questions: It is difficult to see the ball. However, I am getting used to it again and went from striking out an average of 10-11 times per game to about 8. I am still playing in RFK stadium and pretending that my new stadium (the one with the short RF porch) is going to open in 2 years so I can have time to develop it.

Okay, I guess I'll have to live with it. I'm not sure how they didn't catch that when making the stadium. I guess the batters eye that I've seen, which covers up the distraction, in a video was just a mod for the pc.

Anyways, I think I'm going to play with the reds. I still have a owner save of them(rosters are current as 2007 I believe), and I'm only 9 games into the first season. The reason I'm continuing that one is because the most updated roster I have is a mess right now from me trying to update it, and I doubt I'll get updated rosters anytime soon. They're a good team to try to rebuild, and I can probably trade away some of the big contracts for some young or cheap players. It's going to be tough to stay in the green, since I don't expect to make the playoffs for a few years.

Edit: I actually just remembered that I could turn batters eye on, so I will be able to see the ball better. The only downside is the fastball will still be white, and that isn't going to be good since I'll have the least time to react to it.

Good luck with them Reds. I was discouraged at first by the graphics but now that I am used to them again I am having a blast. And don't worry about your rosters. In real life, they change so much from year to year that you will never settle in your franchise. If you are in year 2, then you will be tempted to start over because of new rosters. I will def. keep this one going. If it gets too hard, either use hitters eye like you mentioned or use the pitch speed slider to offset the difficulty. Its only fair because the ball is greyed out more than half the time. Good luck man. Write your results on here if you'd like. I am interested on your moves, payroll increase/decrease, coaching changes, etc. Have fun with it buddy.

That's exactly why I decided to just play with the file I already had. Thanks, and I'll keep you updated. I'm looking forward to hear about yours also.

Haha, I would have been in year 5 or so had I not restarted so many times when big name players switched teams. Ahh well, live an learn, thats my motto. Anyways, I will post updates tomorrow or Sunday for anyone to read. Alright man, I'm throwing in the towel. Had a tough day at work. Good luck with your franchise and update when it is convenient for you so I can read up. Competing against the Cubs and Cards is def. not an easy task.

                          Re: Owner Mode

The first thing I did was trade Griffey. He was owed $13.3MM per year with 4 years remaining on his contract. I looked to see which teams needed a good hitting OF and the Mariners were the first one I came across. I tried to get Jose Guillen and Adam Jones from them, but they declined, so I took Jones out of the deal and they accepted it. Not a bad trade overall, Guillen's a decent hitter(worse than Griff though) and only makes $5.3MM. After that move I looked at my expected income for the year, it jumped all the way to $8MM! Then sadly the next day my media and sponsorship revenue decreased and my expected income went to about 3 or 4 million.

I made other minor moves, just trading some of my minor leaguers for other minor leaguers. I had way too much depth at C and SS so I traded some of my catchers and shortstops for outfielders and third basemen, two positions I had little depth in. I didn't trade or recieve any notable names, most of them probably won't even get to the bigs.

It took me a few games, but I got my sliders right. They give me a good challenge and realistic results. I've gone 3-2 in the games I've played since starting it up again, to bring me to 8-6(1.5 GB of Cubs). I completely underestimated the talent of my team, I think I could possibly have a shot at wild card, but I have a feeling I'll finish right around .500.

Adam Dunn is an absolute monster for me, he has 6 homeruns so far. I was thinking about trading him to dump more salary, but he's my only big HR threat. Another person suprising me is someone I'm trying to trade, Scott Hatteberg. I think I'll have to get rid of him though, because I have Jeff Conine as his platoon partner at 1st, and he's making less money. Conine is just about as good as Hatteberg, and I plan on having Votto platoon with Conine next year.

Right now I am expected to make around $1MM because I bought some more concessions. It's going to be tough to re sign some of my players next year. I'm not sure if I'm going to re-sign Jose Guillen yet, because I don't think I'd have enough money re-signing Brandon Phillips, Josh Hamilton, and him(just a few of my FA to be).

Haha, that is what I absolutley love about this game. I think dumping Griffey was a pretty good move even though your media and sponsorship income fell. I think in the long run, the income you recieve from the media will be greater than what you would have paid Griffey. So that was a great move there. Also, it seems like you are in a bind with some players. I have the Nats so I don't have a true super star other than Adam Dunn, but even he strikes out way too much (up to 33 in 25 games).

In my minor league system, Ian Desmond is tearing the cover off the ball in Single A. Through 20 games, he is hitting .378, with 6 bombs, and 17 RBI. I guess he may be my future SS after all. His potential is a 3 star so I think he may arrive in about 2 years. Since Guzman's contract is expiring, I may re-sign him for one more year or sign a solid defensive veteran for 1 year while he waits and develops further. So my left side will have Ryan Zimmerman and Ian Desmond. I am using Ron Belliard at 2B right now, but don't see him doing too much. He is hitting a pedestrian .222 with a homer and 7 RBI in 19 games. At first, Johnson is starting to step up as he hit his 2 and 3 HR of the year against LA. Lost and am 7 games back from the Mets.

My payroll is at $52 million right now and may end up keeping it like this unless I am out of contention (no plans to increase as of now). If I do not make the playoffs, I will def. have to cut payroll by about 30% because I know I will def. be in the red come off-season. I use spreadsheets and many formulas and have determined that if I am more than $3 million in debt, I will have to set my payroll at $30 million next year or else I would have to forfeit because my expense would run way too high. My starting rotation stinks as it has an ERA of over 6, while my 4 and 5 guys have a combined 10 ERA. I don't have much depth in the minors so I am just going to have to bite the bullet and hope for 5 innings each night.

Good to see you have at least one position most likely set. You do have some decent young outfielders in Milledge and Dukes, who might have some potential to be good one day.

Luckily, I inherited a pretty good farm system. I have 4 players with 4* potential(Votto, Bruce, Stubbs, and Cueto). I also have Homer Bailey who is a 5* potential. I just hope to god that they do something good for me(like bring me to the playoffs) before they demand huge contracts.

Ouch, that would be tough. You'd probably have to play with most young players. If that happens I guess you'll have to rid of Dunn, since he'd be a third of your payroll, right? If you do, I hope you can get some young pitchers for him, because it sounds like you really need them.

Also, how many fans do you average on a nightly basis? I'd guess it's low since you're a small market team, not doing that well. Mine isn't that high, I think I average about 11K fans per game.

Just checked and am averaging just a tad under 10 k which translates to about $200,000 in net profits per home game (including a few consessions and stores). Just played one more before I hit the hay and lost 5-2. John Lannan lasted just 5 innings, allowing 7 hits, 4 earned runs, walked 3, and struck out 1. I am now 8-18, 8 games out. Hopefully the Mets collaspe like they do in real life...lol...And yes, Dunn eats up about 22% of my payroll so If I can't turn it around, I will trade him since he is only on 2 year contract. Just ridding him alone will slash my payroll to about $42 million.

What I really like about this game is that managers do play a roll in regards to performance. Acta has high baserunning (have stolen 10-13 as a team) and low fielding (lead league in errors with 30). I don't want to fire him, but doing so may help the team out. My hitting coach as low contact (.233 team average with 247 K's) but high power rating (22 bombs ranks 3 in NL). My philosophy is plate discipline and it shows as I lead the league in walks with 150 and I have the right hitting coach for that as his rating is an 88.

Anywho, if I can get within 5 games within the end of May, I may take the biggest gamble and sign Sheets. I tried to negotiate with him, but he wouldn't budge. He is asking for $11 million per year over 3 years and I offered $8 million over 4 years. In order to create flexiblity, either Nick Johnson (who is making a tad over $5 million) or Adam Dunn must go. I have to remember that the CPU does sign FA's during the season (something the show and 2k series lack) so I have to act fast. Pedro signed with the Dodgers for 2 years at $7.2 million per.
                                Angels= 2025 World Series Champions!!
