I'm surprised they'd trade Burnett. He's nasty. I guess they don't think they have any shot at signing him in the offseason. -
Re: AJ Burnett maybe traded?
Seems logical enough for the Marlins: they don't think they can re-sign him this off-season, so they're trying to get some major league ready level players instead of 2006 sandwich draft picks. I'm a little bit surprised that they're thinking of moving him while they're still in a pennant race, however. I don't see the problem with trying to win this year with Burnett, then worst case scenario, offer him arbitration and pick up the draft picks once he signs elsewhere. Trading him would certainly send a message to Marlins fans that they are decreasing their chances of winning this year.
This would certainly be a huge move for the Orioles, or any other team.
If the price for the Red Sox includes Bronson Arroyo or Hanley Ramirez, I wouldn't do it.Comment

Re: AJ Burnett maybe traded?
The Marlins have some time before they need to make a decision. In another month if they havn't gained any ground I'd expect them to deal Burnett. It's much better to get something of value than draft picks. And depending on free agency, they may not even get a high draft pick. The Cubs only got a 3rd rounder for Matt Clement because the Red Sox signed 2 free agents who were considered better than Clement. (Renteria and Wells)
If Burnett were signed by a team active in free agency, the Marlins could get practically nothing in return.Comment

Re: AJ Burnett maybe traded?
Is it more that you guys would want to hold onto Ramirez? Arroyo's numbers don't look too great at first glance. Maybe it's because I can't get his Pirates days out of my head. He stunk back then!
I'd steer away from Schmidt. Personally I think Burnett has a much bigger upside at this point. He's 4 years younger and I think his stuff is better. I've heard scouts say that they think Burnett (when healthy of course) has the nastiest stuff in the NL.Comment

AJ Burnett is absolutely sick. Plus, he's just coming off that TJ surgery, and he probably still isn't in perfect shape.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
NFL - Buffalo Bills
MLB - Cincinnati Reds

Re: AJ Burnett maybe traded?
Yeah, it's more about not wanting to give up Hanley, i'll be honest, But I think Arroyo is a solid middle of the rotation starter, he's just had so much pressure on him with Schilling being out and Wells not doing to well to start the season. In a healthy rotation(well, he'd be in the Pen, but) he'd be a good #4, because he's got some pretty decent stuff. Remember he had the longest streak going of not losing a start to start the season at about 18 when it finished, so he's a very dependable pitcher.Comment

That's exactly what the Marlins are thinking. It's been a bit of a disappointment so far this yr, but beating up on the Drays this weekend with the Nationals finally losing is a good sign. 4.5 games out isnt too far behind.President of the Devils Den

I think this could be a move that would put the O's over the top if they get him. That article was pretty interesting. I don't know how accurate Rosenthal is but some of those tidbits were thought provoking.

Re: AJ Burnett maybe traded?
The Florida Marlins are considering trading right-hander A.J. Burnett, a blockbuster move that would alter the pennant races in both leagues, The Sporting News has learned.
The Marlins are engaged in preliminary discussions about Burnett with the Orioles and a second, unidentified American League club. Their goal in trading Burnett, who will be a free agent at the end of the season, would be to obtain three major-league parts — a young starting pitcher, quality reliever and left-handed hitting outfielder.

Re: AJ Burnett maybe traded?
Gammons reported last year that the Sox offered a Hanley/Arroyo package for AJ during the winter meetings this past offseason. This was before they picked up Wells and Clement, so I seriously doubt that they'd want to match a team like the Orioles considering what they have to give. It's too bad these big name pitchers in the NL like Burnett, Schmidt and Wood have some big arm injury concerns...really makes trading for them a difficult assessment.
Personally, with Bellhorn, Mueller and Millar probably in their last year, I don't see Pedroia or Hanley going anywhere unless they sign Damon tomorrow...and Boras doesn't play like that, he'd just have more leverage. This could be the most unpredictable deadline coming up that I've seen!Comment
