Re: Theo Epstein Resigns as Red Sox GM

Gammons: The Boston Globe had a "campaign" against Theo. That's about the most controversial thing he said, everything else was pretty vague and general, like Theo didn't want to deal with the PR aspects as much because he's simply a baseball guy. He also used the word "spin doctors" when referring to a third party, presumably the Boston media. Meanwhile, he said Lucchino was not guilty of leaking information, so in a way, he came to his defense. Let the uncertainty continue...

Yeah but I think Theo knows something about the game. All Depodesta knew about the game he got off of a computer, and you see what that got him.

I was shocked when I heard the news.

Now for some speculation via the FAN 590 here in Toronto (this may be slanted more toward TO but some very interesting speculation nonetheless)

          - There's talk that this'll open the door for JP Ricciardi to use the option on his contract and bolt for Boston. This makes sense in that the Boston job is JP's dream. I wouldn't be too shocked if something like that were to happen.

          - Theo's more likely to go to Philly, just look at the situation there. Philly is a lot closer to playoff success then LA and Philly also has more money to spend. Now remember when Theo came to Boston it was basically the same situation. BTW as one poster said theo turned things around in Boston that's a bit of an exaggeration. The BoSox were a "close but no cigar" type of team back then. I will grant the fact that Theo did turn around the minors.

          - Pat Gillick was scheduled to be on the FAN 590 today and this goes along with the JP Ricciardi rumour. If JP goes to Boston maybe, just maybe Gillick comes back to Toronto. (personally i'd love that)

I made the mistake of going over to SoSH to see what they were saying, and surprisingly, there are a few detractors. You have to admit, it was a pretty brash decision to walk away from your childhood dream job if you're Theo Epstein. I just keep on thinking this thing goes deep with the media and a group of very brash, but seasoned businessmen for this to happen so suddenly...

Time to do something else, I need to sleep on this one.

                Thanks for the insight SportsmanTO.

I've often wondered about Ricciardi and Depodesta though about their saber roots by some of the deals they've made as of late. The Derek Lowe deal even had Prospectus shaking their head at that one...the same could be said for Hinske on a lower scale of course. Either way, regardless of their philosophy, they'll have to be more adept at dealing with the pressures of the media and withstanding tough board room sessions as this whole story has demonstrated.

Kevin Towers and Ricardi were both mentioned on Mohegan Sports Tonight moments ago.

Also listed off 6 other names(3 others outside the Sox, 3 inside.)

Well considering JP had no qualms on letting Delgado go (he didn't even pretend to make an offer) I think he'd be fine with trading Manny away.

I think JP is a pretty good GM for the most part. He isn't like DePodesta tho as JP has relied just as much on scouting as he does on the saber stuff.

Good thing is that Theo has said he will stay around unofficially for a few days, especiallu to help set up with the GM meetings coming up later next week, I believe.

No offense, but I hope he stays in Tor. Granted he hasn't had alot of cash to work with, I'm not enamored by what he's done with the the Blue Jays.

I do think there's a good chance Riccardi might be the new Red Sox GM. He's from Boston, his family lives there, and that's his dream job.

But so far JP has been a mediocre GM, although he's had major payroll limitations until this off-season.

And just because you subscribe to sabremetrics, it doesn't mean you just look at a computer screen and ignore scouting. Whenever I hear or read something like that, it drives me crazy. The same goes for people that say the meaning of Moneyball is a high OBP.

By some accounts, though, it sounds like that's what DePodesta did--just looked at his computer screen and didn't want to deal with actual people. Theo and Ricciardi, as far as I can tell, have tried to strike a balance between both sides, stats and scouting.

Now I'm going to see if I can get my head to stop spinning.

yes, but of the 2, I'd prefer Theo. And DePodesta really didn't do anything wrong in his time there. the team was decimated by injuries, and he didn't throw billions of dollars at Beltre which was their best move of the offseason.
