As for the trade, it's a no brainer. Sure, Hanley Ramirez might be great, and Annibal Sanchez also might be great, but it's likelier that Josh Beckett will be great for the Boston Red Sox than Hanley Ramirez or Annibal Sanchez will. That is why you make the trade.

I'm a little worried about the whole Beckett blister deal, but you really can't pass up an opportunity to obtain a front of the rotation 25 year old who throws flames, and has also proven himself in the playoffs before. Taking on Lowell's contract sucks wang, but again, the prize is Beckett, and these are the Boston Red Sox. They can afford to take on a ******* contract if they're receiving a guy like Beckett as well.

I wouldn't at all be surprised to see Hanley and Annibal flourish with the Marlins. I wouldn't be surprised to see only one of them do well (I'm thinking Hanley), but the fact remains that this is a good deal for the Boston Red Sox in 2006 and beyond.

Oh yea, the Red Sox still have Jon Lester. I like having tall lefties who throw 95+.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him go .270 15-25HR and 75-85RBI... I don't see him being that .290 30HR guy though either.

I think a change in climate may help, but if you remember, Lowe had bad blister problems and we were able to keep him on the field for pretty much all of his starts.

His first season I see a 3.8 era or so and go down towards 3.3-3.2 in season two and hover there. Wouldn't surprise me if he gets his ERA down towards 2.6 though in a year or two.

Fenway is very rewarding for Right handed pitchers who can keep the ball down. Beckett throws a nasty sinking 95-97MPH FB, so I don't think he will suffer much at all.

Anibal is probably a future #2 man, possibly an ace. He has live arm and faired very well for his first season in AA. Was pretty dominant actually, but lester was more dominant. Lester had the same type of stats Paps had in AA, and we have seen how that has translated so far. Paps had a 1.3 ERA in september, and the control problems he faced early on were completely gone.

Forgot to add, Lester, the guy we kept... He may very well be the next Andy Petite without arm problems so far. He may even have a higher ceiling than Andy. Guy throws 92-93 and gets it up to 94-96. He throws the cutter and uses pretty much the same repetoire as Andy. He will also probably add a splitter as did Papelbon with Schilling teaching him the pitch.

          Re: Red Sox/Marlins Potential Trade

Regarding the blister problems, It's my understanding that it was only an issue once last year for Beckett and they've gotten it pretty much under control.

The only Red Sox fans that would be upset with this deal are the people who are obsessed with prospects, and wouldn't give them up for anything. Obviously Hanley and Sanchez have some upside but when you have a chance to get a 25 year old pitcher who is already a sure thing, you do it.

Regarding Lowell, I think at worst he gives you Gold Glove defense with at least as much pop as Bill Mueller. I love Mueller but lets be honest, he is a long ways from his batting champ days. Lowell's salary sucks, but its not like the Sox can't afford it, especially since Beckett comes so cheap. If you just look at it like Beckett is costing 9 mil and Lowell 5 mil, it sounds a lot better.

            That would be 9mil and 2.4mil, not 5mil. =)

It's not like the fans for both teams were filling up the seats. Hard to keep a competitive team on the field when all the locals care about is Football (Miami) or Hockey (Montreal).

                Re: Red Sox/Marlins Potential Trade

Deal is official now, per ESPN, but with 2 new additions.

                To Boston:

                Josh Beckett SP
                Mike Lowell 3B/1B
                Guillermo Mota RP

                To Florida:

                Hanley Ramirez SS
                Annibal Sanchez SP
                Jesus Delgado RP
                Harvey Garcia RP?

Mota may have sucked nuts last year in Florida, but getting him surely can not hurt the bullpen anymore than it would have last year. He might be a bit expensive for a RP, but maybe he'll turn it around? He was, afterall, pretty dominant when with the Dodgers. It's also a no brainer. Mota straight up for some no name single A pitcher? Wow.

Mota was dominant in LA under guess who? None other than dave Wallace, now the sox pitching coach. He only cost 2.6mil last year btw, not expensive at all.

Looking forward to the press conference and seeing them all in Boston hats. What a great tweak in the deal to get a power arm like Mota, even after disappointing last year. As long as he's not asked to close again, I think he'll do great here.

I'd also like to note that I am now campaigning for GM by Committee here in Boston.
