Re: Delgado to Mets...
It's amazing how many of you can't hit the nail on the head and craft up illogical arguments that consist of "Well do you remember Kevin Maas? How about Isringhausen, Wilson, and Pulsipher?"
This is unbelievably stupid and perhaps the prototypical illustration of cherry picking a case to use in an argument.
Here's my take:
Pedro Martinez' prime is slowly winding down. The time for the Mets to make a run at the WS is now, regardless of their past of making piss poor signings (Vaughn, Alomar, etc, etc) and moving good young players (Kazmir). Omar Minaya is infamous for undervaluing prospects and having no problem mortgaging the future for the present. These are facts.
The Marlins are clearly going through a rebuilding phase right now (due to their stadium problems, money issues, plus other assorted BS that I don't know about?) To them, Carlos Delgado is a wasted expense for 2005-whenever his contract expires, a costly expense at that. They're more interested in acquiring cheap, high ceiling prospects that can contribute 2-3 years down the road.
With all that said, it's easy to see why this deal was made. Delgado, on paper, provides the Mets with a mashing first basemen that they lacked last year. The top of their lineup as it stands right now is pretty f'n impressive.

That's sick, I don't care what anybody says. Of course, they need to make additional improvements to the roster, but this was a needed acquisition. Losing Yusmeiro Petit will hurt in a few years when he is likely pitching well for the Marlins. The same goes for Jacobs (I don't know too much about him).
For the Marlins, they have netted some primo prospects over the last couple of days. I can absolutely see them with a rotation headed by Willis and backed up by Annibal Sanchez and Yusmeiro Petit in 2-3 years. Hanley Ramirez could be a phenomenal player or might be a total bust, only time will tell. I have a visceral feeling that, at worst, he will be a phenomenal defensive player. He's also a massively large dude for a SS, so he could have some power in his bat. In a SS, this is like possessing plutonium in your war arsenal. Jacobs should be good enough, I suppose???
Overall, it's a win-win for both teams given the current state of each franchise.
Now, if you disapprove of what Loria is doing to the Marlins baseball talent, then it's a different story...
If you are a Marlins fan, however, you can not deny that they are getting highly valued prospects in return for their MLB talent, so at least they have that going for them. I wouldn't be surprised to see them right back at the top of the heap in 2-3 years..Last edited by GBrushTWood; 11-23-2005, 06:06 PM.Comment

The Marlins are going about this in the right way. The Beckett trade was a smart one but I'm not calling Mike Jacobs a "highly valued" prospect. He doesn't have a position. The Kevin Mass theory is a valid one. Lets see the kid go into spring training and win a job first. He wasn't exactly tearing it up in Winter Ball either. Prospects are just that, prospects. When you can trade for a proven Major League player, you do it. Yusmeiro Petit doesn't light up the radar gun be he strikes guys out and has great control. He's more of a sure thing than Jacobs. I think the Marlins will be in better shape in '06 than they were in '98, because they are making better trades, not just salary dumps. Who knows, maybe in a few years when they are The Las Vegas Blackjacks or the Portland Lumberjacks, they might have a great core of young players acquired from these trades. All in All it seams that baseball in South Florida has reached a "Your Mom's Box" moment.New York Mets

Man, If they can actually add Vazquez and Bengie, that would be sweet for all of us Mets fans down here in PR.
I personally think Hernandez and Molina ara a wash, with Molina getting the nod from me since he's puertorican.
Good seeing another boricua in the forum.
Send me a PM if you want to talk a bit.Comment
