If the owners don't spend then they don't get the top players. Thus causing the team to stink thus causing fans not to go to the game and spend money thus making the owner want to sell the franchise or move it somewhere it can be more profitable. If there is no such location then there is contraction and the team must be wiped out.
Now my next point, I know there are all these "idealists" out there that say hey the people who deserve the millions of dollars should be our doctors, teachers, policeman and other public servants and rightfully so.
Now lets say these idealisms were brought about in the real world. There are many people who are so poor they can not afford medical attention or school education cause they do not have the means to afford it and this is right now currently in this country. Cause medical costs, school books and tuition even with government help is way to much for a poor to mid level income family to afford. Now imagine if you maxed their salaries as if they were athletes then only the truly rich and wealthy could afford to be educated and receive medical attention. Which is pretty much the case now even with many teachers/doctors/public servants being underpaid. Go to many of the inner cities and your not gonna get the best education/medical services/public services for free as you would in a upscale rural community.
Baseball is entertainment. People will always treat athletes/entertainers differently and put them on a higher plain. Its been this way since Roman Gladiator times when they were treated like heros to the athletes of today. Its just the way it is. You don't need sports of movies to live, if it disgusts you that they make all that money then don't watch, participate or spend any money or time on sports and thats it.
