From what I recall, it essentially allowed the white sox to buy out the last year of his contract for 3.5 mil instead of owing the 8 or 10 mil that they would otherwise. It only kicked in if his BA wasn't high enough, or he was injured too much.

Frank Thomas is a lot of things, but Hall of Famer isn't one of them.

Well before the injuries got to him, it was pretty much acknowledged that he was having a HOF career. So at least he had that much going for him.

.307 career average, .995 career OPS, 448 HR's and still going? He'll be a Hall of Famer before he's done. People forget just how good this guy was earlier in his career.

He'll need to reach 500 HR's to even sniff the HOF IMO.

I think he needs to get closer, but not necessarily reach 500. At this point he's a very similar candidate to Jim Rice. If he can get closer to 500 without killing his career average, he's in.

You're probably right. I think what may help Frank is that there could be a backlash against players in the "steroid" era and guys with respectable numbers will find themselves getting in.

                  Here's another tidbit:

From 1991--his first full season in Chicago--to 1997, Thomas became the only player in history to hit better than .300 with at least 20 home runs, 100 RBI, 100 walks and 100 runs scored for seven consecutive seasons.
Only Lou Gehrig, Ted Williams and Jason Giambi accomplished that feat for as many as four consecutive seasons.
