[QUOTE=oo7Soxs]Juan Gone-TigersQUOTE]
Juan Gone was a trade to the Tigers. We gave up Frank Catalanatto, Gabe Kapler, and Justin Thompson for him. A horrible trade but thank God he did not want to sign with us. That would have been by far the worst Randy Smith signing, and thats saying something.My Teams:
NFL - Washington Redskins
MLB - Detroit Tigers
NBA - Detroit Pistons
NHL - Washington Capitals
NCAA - Virginia Cavaliers
NCAA - Arkansas Razorbacks
NCAA - Michigan St SpartansComment

Re: Worst FA signings ever...
Here's some painful Seattle Mariners free agents:
How about Jeff Cirillo, acquired for Brian Fuentes and Denny Stark and signed to a 4-year, $32 million dollar extension? He fizzled out big-time, whined about Safeco Field and Lou Piniella in particular, was benched and finally was moved to SD for Kevin Jarvis and Wiki Gonzalez. An $8 million a year bust.
Oh, and on a huge scale, how about A-Rod for 10 years, $252 million? When it was widely reported afterwards that there wasn't another bid within $100 million of that number, and Tom Hicks basically bid against himself?? Did you know that Scott Boras arrived at $252 million because he was dead-set on doubling the biggest contract ever signed in sports at that time, which was Kevin Garnett? It was in a book written a few years ago by a Seattle columnist, Art Thiel. The story was that Boras got the total to $240 million, and then did just about everything humanly possible to get it to $252 million, double the $126 million Kevin Garnett had at the time. A-Rod produced, but he played what, 3 years in Texas?? And now Texas has Brad Wilkerson to show for it. Amazing. That contract alone nearly led to a massive labor problem.
Finally, on Beltre and Beltran. I think you have to give it another season. I do think Beltre flat-out cashed in on a fluke year, but when you look at his previous 4 seasons, they are right in line with what he put in 2005, his first year in Seattle. Are they worth $12 million a year? No way. Was his 2004 season worth that? Absolutely. But as this thread is showing, free agency is no sure thing, period!Comment
