I don't know much about Place except that he has some pop and projects as a corner OF.

Bard has very good stuff but has struggled with command and consistency. They say he might have the best arm in the draft though. The MLB commentators comment was that "The Red Sox were thanking the draft gods"

They have 2 sandwich picks coming up as well. Amazing how many players you can get by not signing FA's and letting others sign yours.

My guess - he goes back to school.

The reason he slid so far had to do with signability. He slid far enough that he cost himself millions and I think he'll head back to UNC for his Senior year.

            From Baseball America:

"A source familiar with the negotiations says the teams and the players that will be picks at Nos. 2-3-4 have agreed to financial parameters. The Rockies will give Stanford righthander Greg Reynolds $3.25 million; the Devil Rays will pay Long Beach State third baseman Evan Longoria $3 million; and the Pirates will dole out $2.75 million to Houston righthander Brad Lincoln."

scouting report from Keith Law on Bard:

Few players in this year's draft cause as much disagreement as the Tar Heels' other hard-throwing starter, this one a righty with a low arm slot and questions about his makeup. On a good day, Bard keeps his arm at a low three-quarters angle, firing 92-96 mph sinkers with a tight slider that has good, late bite. On other days, his arm angle drops, his slider flattens out, and he struggles to throw strikes. That inconsistency combined with a lot of whispering have led to questions about Bard's toughness and coachability -- vague criticisms that prompted one top evaluator to ask me, "How do you argue against that?" Bard's ultimate destination is probably in short relief, but he does hold his velocity into games and has a good enough shot to remain a starter to warrant a first-round pick.

Some more stuff on Bard from Brewersfans.net:

Bard actually looked more promising than his talented lefty teammate for the Tar Heels, Andrew Miller, after their freshmen seasons at UNC. He quickly stepped up as the team's Friday starter, and was named the ACC's freshman of the year posting an 8-4 record and a 3.88 ERA. His success led to him being named to Team USA during the summer of 2004, and he pitched for Wareham of the Cape Cod League during the summer of '05. He led the Cape in innings pitched (65) and strikeouts (82) on his way to being named the league's #2 prospect by Baseball America, just behind Miller. Bard is a power pitcher, armed with a fastball that sits comfortably in the 93-95 range. He can reach 96-97 when he needs to, and keeps hitters honest with a slurvy curveball that can be unhittable at times. He needs to be more consistent with his breaking ball though, and sometimes he gets too much of the plate leading to big innings. His fastball also is rather straight, despite it's velocity, so he can't fall victim of trying to blow the ball by everyone all of the time. He has a loose and easy arm action that should be able to sustain heavy workloads, and an athletic frame that allows him to repeat his delivery.
And about the Tigers... I think Verlander and Bonderman are there to stay. Even if Miller can develop in to a better than average third man, it would still be a pretty damn good rotation.

edit: Thanks, Joe. Didn't know that was a possibility for him.

Travis Snider for the Jays. It's good to see JP finally going after a young High School player, even though I know nothing about him...

According to Baseball America here's how he ranked among high school prospects:

                Best Pure Hitter - #1
                Best Strike-Zone Judgement - #3
                Closest to Majors - #3

This is from ESPN's final mock from this morning:

                14. Blue Jays: Toronto was prepared to draft Antonelli, but now they're hot and heavy for Snider, arguably the best hitter available in the draft. The Blue Jays would love a crack at Hochevar and would consider pitchers such as Lincecum, Huff and Bard.
Projected Pick: Travis Snider, of, HS/Everett, Wash.

The Red Sox are really stocking up on pitchers. They've picked 4 so far, in their first 5 picks. They have a couple more 3rd round picks coming up.

I heard this draft was pretty weak but I guess it was the hitting in particular that was weak.

We could use some power hitters in the minors but it doesn't look like we'll get much help in that area early in this draft.

Mr. I will open up the wallet to get Andrew Miller in. The Tigers resurgence has taken over Detroit (even when the Pistons and Wings were still playing). Bonderman, Verlander, and Miller are 3 sick young arms in one rotation.

I really hope Miller signs with the Tigers. I'd hate for him to bolt back to UNC and spoil Detroit's chances of having such a good rotation in the near future.

Yanks have taken 3 pitchers, and a LF, Colin Curtis who happens to be a cancer survivor.

Wow, sounds like the first HS pick of the JP era may be a good one. I hope he plays the corner OF positions so we can put him in Left. (course this is likely to be 3-4 yrs from now)

I've played against two kids taken in the fifth round.. Chris Archer (Cleveland) and David Hatcher (Florida)

Used to play on Archer's fall league team.. throws mid-90's, but his control comes and goes. Hopefully the Tribe can turn him into something special.
