Ahahaha, it's about time that Sheffield finally starts spreading his cancer.

If there was one thing Hillenbrand was useful for, he indirectly led to this situation by breaking Sheffield's wrist .

Yes, you were! Good stuff, but Sheff for one more year at $13 mill is doable, irregardless if he plays 1B or not.

        To play what position?

        He's not coming back.

Sheff is getting traded and he'd actually be a good addition for many teams.

Sheff is getting traded? When? Halfway into the season? Sure he's displeased with the team's wishes, but I don't see him bringing back more than he's worth, so there's no point in getting rid of him.

              Hopefully in a few weeks/months.

Again, where do you want him to play? They aren't going to pay $13 million for him to tie up the DH spot when you have Giambi who you don't want to play first every single day, and a lot of veteran players who you'd like to give some rest to by DH'ing them occasionally over the season.

Why would they keep him? He doesn't have much of a position. They can trade him and get something more valuable, like a SP or prospects.

The Yankees did this for two reasons:

                  1) Because Cashman has come to realize that Sheffield still has considerable value on the open market

                  and

                  2) To keep him away from the Red Sox and Mets two teams that both would have had interest and neither team will try and deal with the Yankees

And those really are the ONLY reasons, too.

13 million for one year is a bargain for a player with Sheffield's ability and even though the Yanks won't get considerable value back, they'll get something.

Sheffield already said he won't play one season with a team. So, it's obvious that any team talking with the Yankees would also discuss an extension with Sheffield.

And Sheffield wouldn't push it away because he's already voiced his opinion on the Yankees picking up his option. He doesn't want to be back in New York to play 1st base and he doesn't want to sit on an option without future security.
