Re: Prized pitcher Matsuzaka given OK to pitch in MLB

Not to hijack this thread but Matsuzaka it was announced by Orestes Destrede on XM 175 that the Sox did win the bidding with a bid of over 50 million. I do not know what the hell to believe except the Sox won, but 50 million? That seems a tad bit high.

    Wow, 50 million?

Me thinks it's a combination of inflation compared to the other J-League players and teams being too high on the guy after his WBC performance.

Is this like ebay where you bid your maxiumum bid, but you only pay enough to be the highest bid? Or if the Red Sox bid $50 million, and the next highest was say $30 million, did they spend $20 million extra?

They pay whatever they bid from my understanding.

They have to pay what they bid, unless they don't sign him, is what it seems to be to me.

My source is saying the Red Sox won the bidding with a bid of $42 mil.

Guess we'll see for sure tonight as the Japanese team is holding a press conference at 8pm ET

Re: Prized pitcher Matsuzaka given OK to pitch in MLB

                    • By merely winning the bidding the Red Sox would block the Yankees from acquiring Matsuzaka. By signing him, they would gain the same kind of advantage the Yankees gained when they signed Johnny Damon away from Boston.
LOL at that. It's actually completely different.

Congrats to the Red Sox I guess, that's a lot of money but by all accounts this guy has the potential to be the best pitcher available.

I will now turn my attention to reading NYYfans.com and SOSH just to laugh at all the Yankee fans who were talking this guy up, and the all the Red Sox fans who were saying this guy was going to be Irabu change their tune.

He's not a Red Sox yet, because he hasn't signed a contract. Assuming the Seibu Lions accept the bid (which hasn't been finalized, but is a mere formality now), the Red Sox have 30 days to sign him to a contract.

I can envision the contract not getting done, but I think they have sincere interest in him. Just based on stuff alone, he's the best pitcher available, so I can't see the Sox not signing him and then throwing equal or more money to Zito, Schmidt, et al.

The kid has a lot of innings in his arm.

But, Boston got themselves a talent. The kid can pitch. Hopefully, for them it equates to success in the majors.

What I do know is that Boston will make that money back in Japan. Unfortunately, it doesn't do much for their existing fanbase since they sellout every game anyway.

That amount of money is absolutely ridiculous.
