Was the incident with Gibbons an isolated incident or is he always that moody?
The best thing we could do is sign Schmidt because he would bring some great advice to our young pitchers. Look how Lowry and Cain pitched in San Fransisco with Schmidt. Zambrano and Lilly are not adequate teachers and leaders of the game.

As long as he stays healthy, Schmidt would be the perfect fit for the Cubs. Whenever he pitched against the Cubs at Wrigley he dominated. I don't know if that's because the Cubs offense sucked or Schmidt was that good. But yes, I'd love to see Schmidt as the #2 guy in the Cubs rotation.

The Cubs typically beat top pitchers and fail against the mid / lower tier starters. And yet, Schmidt still killed us every time at Wrigley.

The rumors say that he wants to stay on the west coast, so I wouldn't get your hopes up.

It was an isolated incident as far as I can see it, just the heat of the moment and Lilly didn't want to be yanked and such. Haven't really had any problems with Lilly clubhouse-wise in the 2-3 years he's been here since we got him from Oakland.

JP has said he will do his best to sign Ted the tease and Meche.

Lilly is a league average pitcher. Some nights he looks like a Cy Young Contender while other nights he can't even go past 5 innings. I'm sure his agent will point out the fact he managed to put up good numbers while pitching in the AL East.
He's completely dominated the Red Sox the past 3 seasons.

Lilly is a 3/4 starer. At this point, the only FA pitchers better than him are Zito, Schmidt, and Padilla. I'm going to be shocked if he gets less than 4yrs/40 million.

You think Padilla is better then him?

Yep just said today that they are close to signing him to a 4 year 40 mill. deal. Man I wish my arm didn't blow out my junior year in college. Lilly doesn't throw that much harder than I used to and I am a lefty, hmmm so I guess I would be worth about 20 mill. lol.

Seriously though would be a good time to be a mediocre pitcher right now on this market.

I agree the Cubs do need some stability in the rotation but giving a guy almost 10 mil per year when hes a .500 pitcher is ridiculous. Then again that is the market this offseason but GMs are retarted for even offering these deals.

I agree with the poster who mentioned pitchers doing well coming from the A.L. to the N.L. The difference in leagues right now is very apparent, so any pitcher who could put up a record over .500 in the A.L. should do very well in the N.L.

The Cubbies just need pitching. We can't keep counting on Prior to be in the rotation every year. Sadly enough, $10M seems to be the going rate for a pitcher of Lilly's skills. Heck, Gil Meche is probably going to end up with about that much. It is insane, but Hendry is only doing what it takes to get a winning team (in his opinion).

At least the Cubbies are trying this year. Maybe the White Sox and Cards winning back-to-back World Series was the best thing that could have happened to the Cubs.

I agree 100%.The market is dictating what a pitcher of his magnitude is going to get, and it does a heart good as a Cubs fan to see the team spending some of that money that we as fans fork over every year. We truly are just 2 or possibly 3 moves away form having a very competetive team.

Considering Pavano got basically the same deal a couple of years ago, this isn't a terrible signing (though in a perfect world Lilly gets 7 or 8 million per). I think Lilly can have a good year in the NL and he's better suited for it than he is the AL. He is going to the Cubs though, so don't be surprised if he finds a way to stink up the joint.

Not real sure I like this signing. After looking at his splits for the last three years, I'm not sure he's the guy for us:

                                Day ERA: 5.36
                                Night ERA: 4.22
                                Grass ERA: 5.25
                                Dome ERA: 4.34

Thats not so good, but we'll see.
